Knockback, Episode 275 | Final Fantasy IV (Redux)

For the Brothers Moriarty, Final Fantasy IV -- or Final Fantasy II, as we once knew it on SNES way back when -- is a uniquely nostalgic product. Upon its release in the west, we played the game together, often with me (Colin) sneaking into Dagan's room after I was 'put to bed' so I could watch him conquer the tale. Thus, we eagerly revisit this all-time JRPG classic in KnockBack style, but it's not the first time we've done so. Long-time listeners will recall that one of the very first KB offerings in 2018 was FFIV (Episode 16, in fact). But our show today is a lot different than it was then, and frankly, this is a far deeper and more comprehensive look at Squaresoft's classic than the earlier podcast, as we've both come off a fresh playthrough via the Pixel Remaster. Cecil's tale of darkness-to-light -- and the many stories of the lovable cast that surround him -- helped catapult an entire genre into the hearts of gamers worldwide. Some would even argue IV is the best Final Fantasy, full-stop. We think you could easily make that argument, yes, but such a deep topic deserves much more nuance. Three hours' worth, in fact.

You guys should re-do Castlevania Symphony of the Night!

You might be able to finish it if you really put your mind to it, but the only thing I remember from the game was a cool magnetic dungeon where you had to use all wooden equipment on your party. I have no recollection of the characters or the story - must have not been that deep or memorable in the end. A different SNES 2D JRPG, Chrono trigger for instance, holds up very well, and I've played it for the first time only a couple years ago - it has an epic time-travel story and cool characters. Gameplay holds up, and it even has a NG+ mode. It was released 4 years later, though.

Personally I think it's one of those games that need to be experienced near their release window. I bought the complete edition on PSP, after rolling the credits or 100%ing FF 7, 9, 10, 10-2, 13 and 13-2, and I never was able to finish it(got to the moon). The game is boring - it's walking on the map and talking for an hour, then going into a dungeon and fighting the same 4 monsters for 2-4hrs save point to save point, then back to talking and walking, another dungeon, rinse and repeat. I honestly don't think modern audiences will have the patience to finish it.

Don't worry Colin, I caught your Austin Powers reference of "boiling hot mag-ma" lmao

FF4 is incredible. I think it deserves its place as the Final Fantasy that put the series on the map for western gamers, and with good reason. The music also kicks assโ€”Battle 2 remains one of the most boppin' tunes out of the entire series. Still pops into my head from time to time.
