Defining Duke Ultimate, Episode 126 | The Yakuza Games Report ft. Jason Polansky

As I (Matty) prepare myself for the Yakuza pilgrimage, I needed to know what to expect in such a long, storied franchise. Due to its popularity on Game Pass and the upcoming "Infinite Wealth" entry, now is the best time to inform yourself on burning questions with the biggest one being: Do I have to play all of these games to understand the newest one? Joining me today is Jason Polansky, Producer at Atari, to serve as the ambassador for the Yakuza series! As this was his pitch for the episode idea, I have Jason steer the ship for our conversation much like Ember's Arcade did during the MMO report.

love this. would love to see more jason next year! and more 3rd party interactions as well bring jaffe on to duke! would love to see more folks come thru to the dukes. im almost done w mainline yakuza games. on yakuza 5, and have been having a great time. played 0, 1 and 2 a few years back and played like a dragon, 3, 4, 5, and judgment this year. excellent games. 3, 4, and 5 get a bad reputation, unfairly so in my opinion. 3, and 4 are quite dated, especially 3. but 4 has an awesome story. hopefully matty gets thru 3 alright because the story really picks up after a few chapters. anyway, enjoy yalls christmas breaks :)

I was a little disappointed to hear Matty may skip Zero and go straight to Gaiden Colon The Man Who Erased His Name if h isn’t feeling 3. To me it is the gold standard of the series. But maybe I’m alone on that. To me it’s like playing Final Fantasy and skipping 7… or playing Fallout and skipping 3.

Just finished Ishin and waiting for Gaiden to come in. So glad there's a special episode just for Yakuza. Wish I could hear Micah and Gene's thoughts on the franchise too.

I'm so with you on this one, Matty. Hope I can make time to, at least, get through one of these games.

At the very least, we both personally rank 6 as the best, which is the most important opinion here. Totally agree on the point with 3, which makes it even more interesting to hear Cog resonate with Gaiden, alone. Thanks for listening!

I’d agree that no game in the series is bad. I’d disagree with the starting order though. I started with 7 but I think you gotta start with 0. If anything, Kiwami 1 and Gaiden are the two entries I’d say to skip as they are the weakest and nothing major happens. 3 is a must because it introduces the kids Kiryu cares about the most. And I have a feeling 8 is going to be one of the best judging from the demo. My ranking of the series: 6,7,0,2,3,4,5,1,Gaiden

Played through Zero, Kiwami 1, Kiwami 2, and playing 3 now… I could look up the story, but I don’t want to. Even though 3-5 are ‘old’ by modern game standards, they are still enjoyable. Really hope that they aren’t overlooked.

Currently playing through yakuza the last couple months and currently on 4 and I am absolutely loving the franchise so far

I love hearing about these games and they sound great but I've tried zero and like a dragon and I found out these games aren't for me. Still intrested in hearing about them though
