I've started to explore the genre this past year and plan to continue into this one. Started with the original Dragon Quest, currently on Mario RPG and have a load lined up. It's somewhat of a gaming new years resolution to explore this genre more as I've neglected it for years.

Where the game is made has no bearing on whether it’s a JRPG or not to me. It becomes redundant as a genre if that’s the case. It would be like saying that a French BJJ black belt doesn’t do BJJ because he’s not from Brazil. Genres are only useful to describe the content of a given piece of media. As you say, if someone didn’t know that it wasn’t made in Japan; Sea Of Stars would be a JRPG to basically everyone.

Honestly, I think that, among the other commonly agreed upon features, a clear delineation between combat and not-combat is important for defining a JRPG. Turn based on not doesn't matter, but there needs to be a "notable" transition of systems of some sort from not being in combat to being in combat.

Also - my first Persona game was Persona Q on DS - I was obsessed with DS RPGs and when that came out the box art got me and the whole Alice in Wonderland vibe was awesome. I think this needs a remake!!

On Trails, only the Cold Steel arc is like Persona. I really think knowing Colin’s preferences, he’d love the Crossbell arc (smaller, more intimate party mainly but the story itself as well)

If I asked for a JRPG recommendation and you said Elden Ring I'd never ask you for a recommendation again lol. It does not to need to be taken in the literal sense. I’ve only played Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2. The reason I did wanna get the original back when it came out was the fact square did a Mario rpg and it was great so why couldn’t they do the same with Disney!

Im playing Second Story R and I highly recommend this JRPG. Holy crap am I impressed with this game. Hopefully more people play this incredible game. My most anticipated JRPGs are Rebirth and Ys Nordics. Shout out to Gene. Hearing this opening is really great news. 🙏
