I think his point is that if we want to move past the division, we need to stop using these uncontrollable characteristics to further divide us into smaller and smaller sub groups, especially when those characteristics have no bearing on who we actually are. Take pride in who you are, not what you are. Throughout history, every skin color, culture, religion has been used as justification for mistreatment. It continues all over the world and it seems all everyone wants to do is pick a side which just leads to further division. So, in an ideal American "melting pot" society we should be looking past those certain characteristics and forming larger groups of like minded people who don't really care where your great great grand pappy was born.

People should have the respect of others to identify with their unchangeable characteristics and have pride in them, because those characteristics often represent things that are relevant to those who share that same characteristic. Especially if those characteristics (i.e. skin color) have been used as justification for mistreatment. Stand down on this one, my dude.
