Knockback, Episode 278 | Jaws
Added 2024-01-31 17:00:15 +0000 UTC
1975's Jaws is a seminal work in the thriller genre, and it was somehow delivered by an overwhelmed, overworked, and over-his-head Steven Spielberg, directing only his second theatrically-released film. With a bloated budget more than twice as high as originally anticipated -- and filmed on-location with great difficulty, sending it more than three months beyond its planned schedule -- Jaws had everything working against it. But in the cauldron, something rather revolutionary cooked. From score to acting performances to an oceanic foe that's rarely seen for technical reasons (greatly benefiting the movie!), everything works serendipitously, making Jaws one of the '70s most iconic and important films, and something we simply had to cover here on KnockBack.
Dagan fucking up the game was hilarious.

I have to believe that Quint had an extreme hatred/phobia for sharks after what happened to him and his shipmates during WW2. I think it was his arrogance and maybe even pride that got him killed in the end.

Great convo. Would love to see a whole topic on John Williams. Would probably hit a lot of different movies and eras.

The only thing better than a Dagan warm-up game is Dagan fucking up a warm-up game. Absolutely adorable.

Sagan completely fumbling the segment at the beginning was so funny. Neither of them remembered that Colin said Brando was still alive when they were grading him lol

Dagan, you completely fucked up your one shot at bringing back an opening segment. Let’s leave them where they lie, eh?

Sort it out, Dagan! That opening segment had a lot of Whose Line is it Anyway energy.

I saw Jaws for the first time at the Drive In... In 2020 lol. It's was awesome, our local Drive In was playing classics that whole year. The politics of the movie were super interesting while watching it in the middle of lockdown.

I caught JAWS in IMAX for its re-release and its still great, they did a double feature of ET IMAX remaster, and JAWS IMAX remaster directly after it, was quite a long sit but was one of those once in a lifetime sort of things, also caught the recent Jurassic Park IMAX re-release. You cant beat the Spielberg greats. Was also kind of funny that the shark blowing up at the end shook the seats HARD, the rest of the movie was rather reserved audio wise up until that point so it really hit nicely.

Jaws original runtime from what I understand was long as hell and Verna Fields (“Mother Cutter”) played a critical role in removing scenes and piecing together the movie to make sense.
One of the removed scenes involved Brody’s wife having an affair with Hooper. You can tell too particularly at the dinner scene with the wine 🍷.

Kinda disappointed that it seems like that Final Fantasy pixel remasters knockback run has been put on hold. I’ve been watching those after each one and was hoping you guys would finish that up soon since I just finished the platinums for 5 and 6 recently. I’m looking forward to those discussions when you guys get to them!
