Constellation, Episode 57 | The Lord of the Rings Films, Stand Up Comedy, Ghosting, Last Stand Reflections

Welcome back -- one-and-all! -- to Constellation, Last Stand Media's conversational podcast. This week, the Brothers Moriarty welcome LSM's executive producer Dustin Furman and associate producer Ben Smith to the show. Topics are varied, per usual. Colin starts things off by reflecting on Last Stand itself, and inquires how the boys think the company is doing, what we might change, and how we may look in the future. Dustin has a deep and abiding love of Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy, widely considered some of the finest films ever crafted. Will these movies forever stand the test of time? Ben's been wondering, as of late, if he may have what it takes to try stand up comedy at open mic night. Should he take the plunge? Finally, Dagan chronicles his experiences with both ghosting and being ghosted. Have we been abandoned by people in our lives? Or are we the ones doing the abandoning?

Is there a time stamp to skip the LOTR conversation? I haven’t finished reading the books and I’m saving the movies for after.

Dustin is the oil in the machine in the show. Colin is the driver

You don't tug on Superman's cape; You don't spit into the wind; You don't pull the mask off that old Lone Ranger; And you don't evangelize to Colin.

Kevin Cooper

Hey Sacred Crew. I was watching this show and getting nostalgic for the early days of CLS. I have been a patron since day one (though I think my debit card expired for a while and I didn’t realize it). It was really great to hear each team member’s story regarding LSM and where things are going. Cheering for you all to keep growing at the pace that works for your business. I appreciate the space to listen to diverse thoughts, ideas, and games. Constellation has been such a good addition to this channel. I have always loved games but I am at the point where games are a much smaller part of my life but this show reminds me so much of the time when I would sit and play games with my friends in college and challenge each other with various topics.

For the Christian evangelizing to Colin (Matthew 10:14)

Great episode fellas!

As a Christian I’m sorry that someone may have pressured you over email. Love how you never know what’s gonna be talked about on this show.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy was my first nerd fandom. Dustin, I don’t know how you weren’t scared of Fellowship as a first grader. I’m the same age as you and I can vividly remember being in the theater with my family and I was covering my eyes whenever they showed the orcs base at Isengard or having the infamous Bilbo Baggins going evil for the ring jump scare. It freaked me out, honestly that scene of Bilbo still gets me today it’s fucking scary. My friends dad in my neighborhood made me and my friends wooden replicas of the swords in the movie and we would role play as the characters from the movie and run around the hills behind our track chopping down weeds pretending that they were the orcs, goblins, and various enemies. I was Gandalf most of the days.

Wow the dagster has his own joke journal

Are you the guy??

You should read the Bible tho. You might learn a thing or 2.

Great episode, I am surprised nobody mentioned the amazing, sublime music by Howard Shore, nor the 3 songs by Enya, Emiliano Torrini and Annie Lennox respectively.

I can tell you I had listened to Colin’s content since he got booted for a joke. Used to listen to both his new and old company until Greg Miller told everyone fuck you if you supported Trump and to quit listening to his content. I think everyone should be welcomed to consume content they like without being judged for their political stance. Thanks to everyone here for making a community where all walks of life are welcome. Keep up the great work and I continue to support that type of thinking.

Hey, while Colin was going into his accounting woes I was thinking that a monthly or 6-times-a-year pod where Colin discusses an aspect of his business mindset with a guest or two would be mighty interesting to me, at least. Whether something important he’s learned over the years or a potential pitfall to avoid.

Don’t worry - you’ve got my $5 as long as you keep going. Also - THE LSM ROASTCAST needs to happen. You can use that no charge. 🙌

The Devmeister

5 hours of interviews was no big deal?! Even if not ghosted I would see that as unacceptable 😅

Colin, Chris, and Ben are the ones I think would most easily be able to write a stand up routine. I think Joe Rogan is funny but his latest specials aren’t his best material. Same goes for Chappelle as well. I think SNL is more miss than hits lately. Weekend Update is the best and most consistent thing they have going on. The Rings of Power was mostly solid but definitely not worthy of being the most expensive show ever made.

I can only speak for myself, but I like LSM content because of the diversity of opinions and perspectives that all come from thoughtful and critical people. That's what I've always liked about Colin as long as I've been following him is that he thinks critically and has a thoughtful and nuanced opinion even if I don't always agree with him, and I like that LSM is full of similar people. I also think this fact in combination with the long form content (which I love) is why you're growing in the 30+ range and not so much the kids. I don't think that's the kind of content most youngsters are looking for. I know I was into long form, thoughtful content when I was a teen and found Colin, but most teens and young adults don't want or can't handle the nuanced and diverse opinions. It's just a fact of growing up that you can start to grapple with it more. When I was a teen, I couldn't always put the nuanced pieces together like Colin does, but it really helped me hearing someone talk something out critically and logically. I really do think Colin and others like him really helped me form how I think about things

Sounds like Last Stand uses cash-based accounting, not accrual-based. Makes sense for a business with ≈$1m in annual revenue, mainly derived from a subscription service offered on a third-party platform (Patreon). It’s not like y’all are manufacturing widgets or holding inventory aside from merch, so accrual wouldn’t add much value.

One of the most powerful scene in Return is when they're at the black gate, about to make the last stand (haha) and Aragorn turns to them all and gives the "For Frodo" line. Not only does that invoke all the emotions, but its only when you notice that out of all the free people's of Middle Earth, the first two to go after Aragorn, without a second thought, is Merry and Pippin. That shit chokes me up like nothing else

Zack

I loved the Cosby show so much as a kid. My mom took me to see Bill at a comedy show. My mind was blown at what he was saying

Dustin.....no alcohol in grocery stores? I live in PA and worked at a grocery store that sold alcohol

If anyone is interested in listening to the audiobook of LOTR, the one on Spotify is read by Andy Serkis, who played Gollum in the films. Ad yes, he does do the voice

Supa excellent and enjoyable ep

Completely agree with Col. Sacred Symbols has been even better than the “good” it was before. Y’all are absolutely killing it.

When I think of the roast of Michael Scott, I always think of the part when he goes to the park to ponder his thoughts after the roast. He sits on the bench and does his bird call. Then throws whole slices of bread on the ground to feed them. But there are no birds around. 😂

Michael Mashpotato

At age 45, what I appreciate about Last Stand and why I think they’re so popular is because the collection of truly genuine personalities across the board. No one’s putting on an act. So many of the other shows feel so try hard. The hosts are so performative and desperate to be safe. To use Collin’s word, “Organic”, the group of host that has formed over the years at LS feels just that. Nothing is forced. There are no TG’s.

Vanzant

Not everything is forever. But as long as Last Stand is around I’ll be here too.

Have you considered considering considerations considerately considerate

I can be your Jamie, your half assed internet research guy;)

Red Letter Media topic, when?

Samurai Costanza

I'm almost 52 and been following Colin since IGN. Dustin is correct I don't want to listen to a 22 year old. I'll be here till you close the doors even if Colin retires and Dustin takes the wheel.

New Stelly! Keep up the great work guys!
