Defining Duke, Episode 162 | The End of Xbox Is Upon Us...? (ft. Sacred Symbols)

After weeks of unaddressed rumors surrounding Hi Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves coming to PlayStation, the powderkeg blew for Xbox this week. Gears Of War, Halo, Starfield, Indiana Jones, and a growing list are all reported to be going multi-platform. The only official comment we have on the matter is no sort of denial, but rather a "see you next week." In a DEFCON 1 level episode of Defining Duke, we opted to hold summit featuring each side of the aisle. Joining the Dukes are the Sacred Symbols boys. Is Xbox bowing out of the hardware space? If so, what does this mean for the competition in the gaming space with PlayStation remaining unchallenged? While it's all but confirmed that Xbox games are headed to PlayStation, the question remains in what capacity? For years, Xbox fans generally understood the idea that these would arrive thanks to Game Pass. Now, it seems Microsoft is doing this for sustainability. Naturally, fans of the platform feel betrayed leading to a plethora of meltdowns online. What happens to their digital libraries if an exit is made? Is Xbox throwing the towel too early when the vision is just about to come to fruition? The questions continue to mount as we had over 300 write-ins to sift through, so let's discuss the very future of Xbox and what the rationale behind their next phase may be.

Please note that this is Thursday's episode. Also, due to the special nature of this episode, there are no timestamps.

Comments

I know I’m late on the comments but just wanted to express appreciation for Cog! I had no idea who he was before I became a Patron but I love hearing his thoughts on any of the various shows. Keep up the fantastic work as always guys! 💙

Genuinely disagree with the notion that Xbox hasn’t been competing with PS. If they haven’t been, then Sony wouldn’t be signing third party exclusives that wouldn’t have been on Switch.. and only Xbox other than PS. I think Sony knows that Xbox has a global appeal issue, and they try very hard to keep them down in the Japanese game space which has lots of appeal across all of global markets. If Xbox wasn’t a threat, then they wouldn’t care about these deals at all. Straight up.

Zachary Abell

I figure Game Pass on Playstation would be branded as Xbox Plus, and it would include only Xbox "exclusives". This version of Game Pass would exist as a part of Playstation Premium in the same way that Ubisoft Plus is a part of it. Xbox wins because they're getting rips on Playstation, and Playstation wins by getting increased subscribership to its Premium tier.

Kevin Cooper

That’s not why Xbone fell off lol, maybe start with it being 100 quid more expensive than it’s competition

Daddy T

Thanks Matty & Cog for an awesome year or so podcasting you both had a great run, I wish you both the best on whatever comes next

joseph lemons

Uhhh, Japanese. And yes, that was seen as an absolute disaster move that mostly ensured ally victory

Chuck Rude

Good work gents - this is straight up the only salient and poignant conversation on this subject out there. Everything else is clearly hyperbole, fanboy fodder and nihilism 😂

The Devmeister

Hats off to Matty, this is the best episode of LSM content I can remember in a long time. Fantastic analysis and steering of the conversation 👌 Look forward to more of the Duke’s thoughts in this intriguing time!

Tom

Somebody help me... Why would Steam invest in a console so similar to a PC? Genuinely wondering. Thanks

SaltyTrees

The only reason Xbox One fell off is because they lost CoD exclusivity. All these consoles win based on that. Then Destiny having PlayStation exclusivity in some forms. I would imagine Microsoft as a company have identified profit in that regard with buying ABK and lots of other studios. Which will now all be folded into game pass.

Rage Against the Last Stand

Great show Matty, Cog and the Sacred Boys. As I said on the youtube vid, this is the S tier content I pay my $5 a month for. Keep it up. Perhaps a Part 2 could be made when the dust settles after the upcoming Microsoft 'Business' announcement. Cheers.

TrackyMatts

My guess as to what’ll happen: PS gets Xbox games after a while and a la cart. Could be a year later, 3 months later, whatever. Xbox sells it as but if you want to play it first and play it cheap, get it day 1 on Game Pass. Everybody wins.

NeO JD

Yep, it's actually hard to fail as bad as they did that day. Bad pricing, always online requirement, kinect required, talked about TV instead of games, blocking used games (people seem to forget how big of an issue this was considered at that time), no backwards compatibility (making it easy for entrenched 360 users to jump ship), and the cherry on top, the quote from Don Mattrick "We have a product for people who can't get online, it's called Xbox 360" Not one single bright side came out of that reveal. Every single thing was viewed as a negative. Buying a PS4 was seen as flipping the bird to mega corporations trying to strip away consumer rights. Hence Sony's simple, but effective "This is how you share games on PS4" video.

Zach

I just can’t understand why PlayStation would ever want Gamepass. Either it offers such value that it would detract from their own sales, and teach customers to not purchase; or Xbox is such a non-entity that they’d be better off leaving it to rot.

TheSissyOfFremont

I mean it really is his show he does OWN it at the end of the day 😭

Big titty drinker

Steamdeck can function as a console

Owen

“I have to know this is not my show” - yeaaaa

Owen

I'd say Nintendo has nostalgia hooks in a few generations now which helps a lot. People who know nothing about gaming know about Mario. I can't think of any Microsoft owned character with that kind of universal brand recognition. Consoles are always cheaper then the other two. Considered the family friendly gaming option. It's portable, another huge selling point for parents. Nintendo just operates so differently in this space compared to Sony and Mircosoft. I'd also say the Wii U didn't generate anywhere near the kind of negative reception the Xbox One got after it's showcase. People just didn't really care about the Wii U. People were PISSED about the Xbox One. To top all of it off, no one at Nintendo said well if you don't want a Wii U we have an option for you, it's called the Wii. When Don Mattrick said that shit about Xbox people were livid.

Zach

“Palling around with a Sackboy, wow that’s gross” 🤣🤣🤣

Ross Stoddart

The Xbox One getting blamed for the "death" of the Xbox brand is wild to me as a Nintendo fan. The Wii U sold 13.5 million lifetime. The Switch has done 140 million and will end up around 150. Nintendo dug itself out the whole with good leadership and great games. Xbox's leadership couldn't get it done and hit the emergency button before the games were ready

BigDumbStupidIdiot

This is your best episode so far by a mile, keep up the awesome work

Trevor Myers

Bro the thumbnail is insane. I love lol

Elvin Araujo

Great episode

And the Steam console failed

Jeff in NOLA

We’re all claiming Xbox is over if they no longer have exclusive games. Or that their hardware will go away once exclusives will go away since no one will choose their hardware and miss out on PlayStation exclusives. How will any of that be different with a Valve hardware? Wouldn’t a steam console be in the same exact position?

Bogey

I accidentally got on the Xbox fanboy Twitter algorithm and the only answer was to delete the app. The Xbox fanboys are the most insufferable douchebags I’ve ever seen.

Adam Barnes

All of this is really the Xbox extremist fanboys fault. Colin hit the nail on the head and I’m glad he said it. The Xbox community at large is full of zealots and propagandist. It is. By far the WORST community in video games and honestly they deserve EVERYTHING that is happening to them currently because they facilitated this reality. We told y’all for YEARS to buy your games , gamepass is harmful and that consolidation might not play out how you expect. You reap what you sow boys. But man they not just waving the white flag with this. They twerking with the white flag hanging out they ass. Pretty funny to watch the Xbox fanboys suffer like this after years of constant lies , mental gymnastics and misinformation… for it to backfire like this is pretty poetic. 🤭

Big titty drinker

Hell of an episode boys. Everybody brought their A game.

Bogey

I want Dustin in charge of Valve. Give me a steambox. I want the ease of console but with steam.

john spatta

Incredible episode, really great insight

John

Sega gamers had it so much worse when sega went under. We had to go buy an Xbox, ps2 and GameCube if we wanted to enjoy all our sega exclusives lol. That’s when I started to hate exclusives.

Pretendo

Great episode, Dukes and Sacred Boys. I love the crossover episodes. Please, everyone - don’t panic, don’t jump to conclusions until Microsoft speaks! It sucks they’re just letting everyone stew for a week but now is not the time to sell your Xbox. Wait and see.

Brett Altmiller

Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?

Michael

Excellent Listen boys. A tough conversation to have, but there can be positives to come from this if done correctly. Keep it up Dukes!

Mykal

Great discussion, as always, but I'm still confused on how we go from "Xbox is considering launching their 'exclusives' later on PlayStation 5" to "they are discontinuing the Xbox console". (I mean to say lots of people seemed to have this reaction) To the question "Why do I even need an Xbox?": isn't the answer always the same? - you need it because you want to play the exclusives or timed-exclusives as early as possible. Btw, why do you need a PlayStation now games are coming to PC? You can also wait 5 years, buy a cheap PC that runs the Playstation version better than the console in the first place (I'm exaggerating on purpose to be cheeky) Day and date is so important for the community of Game Pass subscribers, and also lots of people pre-order games on their console of choice, but suddenly if now they come up eventually and later to another platform people go "why do I need an Xbox"?

Manuel Nascimento

Apple Vision Pro question: How long before we see the headline “…. dies wearing Apple Vision Pro…”

BadHairDayCaveman

You hit the nail on the head for me. I've been paying attention pretty loosely. I heard about a couple exclusives jumping ship then the next week I'm reading Microsoft is leaving the XBOX brand behind. How did we get from point A to B without any word from the ones actually making the decisions on this stuff?

Zach

I personally think this is a win for us gamers. It’s only bad if you care about console wars. Microsoft could make a lot more money selling their games on other consoles and still create their own box.

Michael Mashpotato

I miss the last ping in the opening song intro

Philip Dunphy

To Chris’s point about the XBONE reveals devastation… the 360 survived the red rings catastrophe & still succeeded. That reveal stole the wind…. Along with a generation with no must play games.

Kenneth Koepnick

I love the Series X, it is so clean… but that controller drives me nuts!!!! It’s so f’n loud!

BadHairDayCaveman

The crossovers are always so good. Great work

Hayden Seidel

This has to be one of the best episodes LSM has had. Amazing stuff from all 5 of you guys. Next week can’t happen soon enough.

Antonio Pereira

Can someone tell me where in the blue hell all of this began? With word about Hi-Fi Rush/Sea of Thieves jumping the exclusivity ship together, is that right? How’d this talk gain so much traction, while we’re still waiting on official word of anything from on high?

ConorJTobin

What a BANGER of an episode, gg boys

JtHasToast

Another massive bonus for the idea of a Steam console: you can access GamePass and PlayStation streaming through the Steam Deck already

Gabriel Baker

Meh but it’s the truth. The Xbox 360 dominating was all just word of mouth; numbers do not lie unfortunately

A Hind D

Colin underplaying the 360 is where his fanboy side shows a bit. Yes the PS3 ended up selling more but at the very end. The 360 was mainstream like the PS5 is now. I say that as a huge PS3 fan where back in the day, most people would laughed at you for trying to defend the PS3 one bit. 360 dominated that generation foh. 😂

Jeff Caseres

The meaning of life is to increase shareholder value.

Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road

Zeke the Plumber

I’m staring at that thumbnail sleep deprived just laughing my ass off, thanks for the laugh Dustin!

Brandon Tyler

Love the show. If Matty followed the sales charts, this whole situation wouldn't be so surprising

Jacob Lesperance

Looking forward to listening to this tomorrow 💪💪💪
