Knockback, Episode 279 | Trying (and Largely Failing) to Make a Top 10 NES Games List

For this week's KnockBack, we thought we'd do something a little bit different. A major fuel source for the origins of our podcast back in 2018 was our shared love of the NES: The hardware, its games, and the community that's long surrounded it. So we thought we'd delve back into that subject matter by each constructing a Top 10 NES Games list and then trying to fuse them together, a task we almost immediately abandoned when we realized we approached our respective lists quite differently. Thus, what emerges is a robust talk about many of the games from our respective childhoods, and how we still grapple with their undeniable greatness to this day.

Knockback, Episode 279 | Trying (and Largely Failing) to Make a Top 10 NES Games List

This was a hard listen

Jordan Dedo

Swap Contra with Kid Icarus and I think my list would be identical to Colin's. I would probably try to sneak Double Dragon 2 in there somewhere, too. Some sports games are noticeably absent, though... Track n Field... RBI Baseball... Ring King. An impossible list to make any way you look at it. Oh shit -- and Chip n Dale's Rescue Rangers. Man, what a generation.

Kevin Cooper

Metal Warriors was my mech game, it was available for rent at my local video store in the late 90’s

Great conversation! The main omission for me would have been Blaster Master. Straight up feels a generation beyond most of the other games on the system in terms of its scope. And unlike Metroid 1, it’s actually fun to play ;)

Moomoo

Do this for all the systems up to 7th gen 🫡

Yalingo

Almost!

I didn't actually get into MegaMan other than on Gameboy until they came out with X on the SNES. The original MegaMan is IMO not fun to control.

PRETENTIEUX

Nintendo World Cup was some serious competition!

PRETENTIEUX

Pokemon is definitely one of them but you'd have to count it as a franchise.

When the Dagster didn’t have Mario 3 on his list I almost clicked off

Nick Pacheco

Are you ok?

Froilan

back when colin was a real gamer and wasn’t playing slop for trophies and avoiding the classics of today because they are either too hard or don’t have trophies.

Ryan

I love the old school Nintendo talk. I was never a mega man player and now I’m itching to play these games

Joseph Spatola

He tries so hard. 😄

NeO JD

No TMNT the arcade game is kinda sad, you don’t see that in many top tens. Maybe because Turtles in Time is such a masterpiece, it gets overlooked. Special shout-out to dynasty of an emperor, it fostered my love of the Dynasty warriors games.

Michael Thew

People seem to forget about bubble bobble, great game with tons of replay value.

About a decade back, my friend and I went to a retro shop and bought Kings of the Beach and Roger Clemons baseball and played those games all summer. Those games are still really fun to this day and can get really competitive lol.

Michael Mashpotato

Great episode guys. When you mentioned Tetris, it gave me an idea for a topic - and apologies if you’ve already done it. 20 best / most influential games of all time - but not just video games but board games etc as well. So stuff like Chess, Monopoly, Magic The Gathering and D&D could be in there. Possibly a topic for constellation too.

Ross Stoddart

It's done. The Dagster is here to stay. Run the stickers!

Stewy108

My personal top 10 1. Xexyz 2. Super Mario bros 3 3. Contra 4. Mike Tysons punch out 5. Track and Field 2 6. Zelda 7. Bubble Bobble 8. Golgo 13 9. Rescue Rangers 10. Ninja Gaiden 2 ---- Honorable mentions River City Ransom Heavy Barrel R Type Skate or Die Punisher

Mysterious (xo) Narrator

Can we please get a retro gaming show?

Mattveego

Faxanadu is my favourite NES game besides Zelda 2.

The Devmeister

A Boy and His Blob or I riot. Great episode idea.

Dante B

“What am I gonna read your novella here?” 😂🙅‍♂️

Joe Perez

Great idea for a Knockback episode!
