Sacred Symbols+, Episode 371 | Moriarty x Corden: The Shifting Paradigm
Added 2024-03-16 16:00:09 +0000 UTC
Please welcome Xbox-centric journalist, podcaster, and editor Jez Corden to Sacred Symbols+. For this episode, I (Colin) sat down with Jez for a two hour chat that touches on a number of relevant subjects: Game pricing, the evolution of industry PR, funding AAA (and AAAA?) titles, the PlayStation brand's Apple-like evolution, the future of GamePass and other subscriptions, which Xbox exclusives may come to PS5 next, the revitalization of handheld gaming, and so much more. This is a great, metered, fair, and insightful conversation that we suspect you're gonna love. Enjoy.
Great conversation, would like to see Jez back in the future for sure

I think you might be misinterpreting what Jez meant about consoles and "in house servers". What Jez is saying is that it is cheaper for MS for someone to buy their own console and power it with their own electricity. This is in contrast to someone playing on a "server blade", which is just a console that MS needs to pay to power, store on their own property (which is another cost), and so on.

This take is super irritating on Steam Deck. Steam Deck has only sold 3 million units through the end of 2023, estimated, which is still less than the Sega Pico. The Steam Deck is niche at best, but it's not a real player. Not within a long shot.

I honestly don't understand a lot of the praise. I think a lot of Jez's analysis was just bad or not very insightful. Current consoles are just an in house server for games? That's not even remotely accurate, I don't think streaming is that widely used. Switch is 0% streaming.
Then his whole take on Xbox gamers not wanting to switch over just isn't the same as Playstation because there's so many less of them.
I also don't think Colin pushed enough in the portion of the conversation about Phil Spencer, I think Jez is very clearly too close to the ecosystem. People saying Jez is the Colin of Xbox don't really understand what Colin does.

You want to know why these younger kids aren’t buying consoles? The same reason we did. The marketing. The 90’s console wars were really a war in marketing that made it fun to pick and play a console. Today’s video game marketing is pitiful. It’s not fun. There no flare. No style. These companies don’t get it. Abstract commercials about Dreams and what can be made. Basic commercials with some celebrity in their living room. They are marketing to customers they already have not new ones.

I mean he usually is, Colin is way too hard in him. The people don't love phill for no reason.
That kinda funny interview was one of the most frank and honest things I've seen from a big exec, and yet, Colin still didn't give him props.

Jez really is like the Xbox-Colin lol
Always love to hear the Xbox perspective because it’s so damn interesting. That is, when youre not hearing it from truly deranged and industry damaging Xbot fans on twitter.
Thanks Jez for keeping it real.

Great episode. I’ve always been a fan of Jez and his work. Wish he could become a third chair on Duke, but it probably doesn’t work for him at all.

Couldn’t agree more with Jez on Valve being a threat to both PlayStation and Xbox. I own all boxes but I’m on my Steam Deck most. Therefore I’m in Valve’s marketplace the most, which offers far more value than both PS and Xbox imo. I will always buy Nintendo especially when their first party offerings are as strong as they are now. Gaming is shifting but far from crashing. MS and Sony are realizing more competition is coming.

39yr old male gamer since Sega master system 2 and and owner of every PS since PS1. I kinda agree with you for the most part, one of the key things that forced me to explore the option of steam through the deck is the lack of a fee in order to access online play for games that I've purchased as well as cloud storage for game saves.

Respect for how Colin navigates differences in opinion in this episode. You can tell these two have respect for each other’s point of view

Fantastic episode, Jez is so on point about Steam, I’m glad he mentioned the deck multiple times and how PC gamers will now wait for PlayStation games to come over when previously they would buy a console as a supplemental device. Colin needs to be shaken out of his notion that everyone is as locked in and OCD about trophies and brand loyalty as he. Many hardcore gamers migrate over to PC as they age up and have more disposable income and often buy multiple consoles too. They also have less time to play everything on launch and are fine waiting. The need for consoles is waining for PC gamers, and the deck brings all gaming your brands to one place. Except for Nintendo, because they are the actual Apple like company, not Sony. High prices, rare discounts, major walled garden, and fans that buy whatever they make, buggy or not, in the 10’s of millions.
