Constellation, Episode 63 | Kate Middleton, Missed Connections, Life's Little Pleasures, Favorite Living Artists

Welcome back to Constellation, Last Stand Media's conversational podcast. Colin returns to the lineup this week to talk about the current kerfuffle across the pond. What is going on with Catherine, Princess of Wales and is this whole royal fiasco a total scandal or a complete nontroversy? Micah Moriarty explores Craigslist 'Missed Connections' and puts a question to this panel of smooth-talking casanovas; Have we ever locked eyes with a stranger across a crowded subway car or supermarket aisle but lacked the courage to pursue romance? David Jaffe would like us to revel in Life's Little Pleasures. What are the rituals and routines in our lives that we look forward to and delight in the most? Finally, Dagan would like us to sing the praises of our favorite living visual artists. See, we can express admiration for people without ending it in RIP. Who knows, maybe they'll even hear us!

You've gone too far

The smoothest interaction that I ever had on a bus commute was when a woman asked me to borrow a pen, and then when she got off at her stop she handed me the pen back with a small note and her number. Pro move. I thought it was very clever because it completely avoids being trapped on the bus together if things don't go well. I was in a relationship at the time, but I did call to tell her that I appreciated the gesture.

Kevin Cooper

Now this makes sense

Glen Yelenovic

Usually understand what Jaffe is trying to get across but I audibly exclaimed shut the fuck up when he was started going on about Taylor Swift

Daddy T

Specifics please? Thx!

David Jaffe

Jaffe’s opinions are becoming increasingly grating. And this is coming from someone who used to like the guy.

Nikitas Gagas

I thought I heard she had cancer months ago and thought people didn’t want to believe it and thinks she died or was killed off

Jason Thompson

Black lover indeed…

Rio_Yeti_

Absolutely love England, I got the chance to be there for a while last year!

Cyprus Davis

Crazy to hear Kate Middleton in fact does have cancer smh

Raymond keys

Kates got suuuuuuuuper fucking deep in to hell divers 2 🤷‍♂️

Draven E.

If The Dagster is enjoying being the host, then I am 100% #LetDaganHost

Cameron Johnson

The way Colin talked about Dredge is how I feel about Coheed and Cambria. 🫡

NecrumOddBoy

Love when the dagster hosts he brings that warm sunshine energy.

Why is it sad? It's not to me. I don't romanticize the creative process. To me, the magic is in the ideas. Execution is a means to an end. I'm not saying execution doesn't lead to breakthrus that improve the ideas (of course it does) and I'm not saying execution doesn't yield a wonderful sense of accomplishment. But that's not my goal, be it a game I'm designing or a video I edit. My goal is to get what is in my head out to other people to- ideally- enjoy. And that is FUCKING HARD so the easier a tool can make that work, the better (IMO).

David Jaffe

The GIF of the train ramming into the tunnel over and over is what kept coming to mind…. Yeah you know the one 😂

Gray Gordon

I wonder what Jaffe 30 years ago would think about his current opinions on AI. Pre- God of War or Twisted Metal Jaffe. To say the creative process doesn’t matter essentially means he doesn’t care about the memories of working with his team to make those games, and if he could’ve just pressed a button to make the games appear- he would. Quite sad.

Diddy’s Dong Quest

What an intro 😂😂

Michael Mashpotato

“WHERE IS KATE?!” 🤣

NeO JD

2nd time he’s done it. I don’t mind it because I’ve been telling him forever that his real next job is podcasting more. 😅

NeO JD

No one asked me, but for the artist conversation I’d probably have thrown out Matt Stone and Trey Parker. South Park is still such a strong franchise and the quality is still extremely high, imho, after 25 years. They’ve popularized a very unique art-style and still put on a great show. I think Studio MDHR deserves a shoutout too for their Cuphead work, but I’m unsure who exactly deserves the credit for the art style, in that family.

Zachary Abell

Trying to correct Micha to pronounce Craig incorrectly was crazy 😂 Dagster is a great host! I'm sure Colin will appreciate that responsibility being lifted from him as well which is nice

nevernosam

Yes, let the Dagster host! He was born for this.

Joseph Gedgaudas

I think you are wrong. I also think: #1-People with good, creative ideas will always (for the most part) use whatever tools they can to express those ideas as best as possible. If creating a good image (according to the masses) becomes easy, the artist will be the one that takes a good image and gives it a unique, personal spin that connects in a way most people don’t think about. AI is a tool to make art creation faster and easier so the true value of an artist (IMO: their thoughts and how they want to use their art to convey those thoughts) will be able to be shared faster and more often. #2-IF it turns out that AI is able to create creative work that the vast majority finds good enough or better, then it should take over. You can always do your personal art as a hobby if you enjoy it (like people still do calligraphy today) but if you are talking commercial art, why would you suggest this be restricted? Can you think of a situation where we’ve ever created such restrictions before on commercial creative work? And would you want some restrictions on other tools that have made creation easier, faster, and more available? I mean, you are literally commenting on a podcast thst exists because Colin wanted to make it and he -unlike when I was a young adult- did not have to go pitch and compromise his vision in order to get it on tv or the radio. Because the tools to create got cheaper and easier and more accessible. Many would argue these AI tools are different because they do the work for you. But as I say in #1: the work is not the goal. The goal is using the work to get your ideas yo the world. But if you want to start a fire by rubbing sticks together you have my support. I just ask you consider the value that gets added (time saved to do other things) by using a book of matches or a lighter. NOTE: this all assumes the art used to train the AI is done so in a way that is legal and fair. I 100% am opposed to art being ripped off in order to make AI better. There are legal ways to do it and I hope they become the norm soon (aka legislation needs to happen asap).

David Jaffe

Are you the leanbeefpatty guy from the snark tank patron??

dead again

I find it mildly disrespectful that Jaffe jumps at the opportunity to praise artists to try and turn it back into a "well it's just a matter of time for AI guys!!" Am I wrong to think this?

dead again

As he’s talking to an animator looking for a job, feels bad man

Brandon Tyler

"Let Dagan host" 😂😂 what a way to end, I luv it. #LetDaganHost

Marcus Brown

You guys nearly made me spit water out lmfao. Y’all hysterical

RK128

So sad that in a topic about appreciating artists Jaffe had to talk about AI. :(

Danio

Can’t drop the seeds

GameSimp

As an American I can't understand why anyone cares about the royal family. They are just figure heads that cost a lot of money. They are the definition of priveledge. Not to mention their family is filled with scandals. Can't understand why the UK even keeps the facade going.

Paul Knickerbocker

Hello Scottish man here I can’t speak for Britain but people of my age group under 35 in Scotland , mostly dislike the Royal family as a drain on economy and a pointless facade .

Sir Poops McGuffin

Always a pleasure to listen to Jaffe curse himself when he realizes he's going on a tangent haha

Geoff

I don't think he's trying to say there's no reason to ever deposit cash at the bank. I think what he's saying is that it's much too risky to do in any case, when you can deposit money with the teller during open hours with no risk at all.

PRETENTIEUX

Nobody who is visible in the public eye has any real power.

PRETENTIEUX

Approaching women in public is such a fine line of being creepy and not being creepy. A lot has changed since the pandemic in my opinion. When I'm out in public, most women have their earbuds in with a scowl of "don't approach me". Probably because the majority of them don't want to be approached.

Derek Alcott

Colin, you might enjoy this book called God, Human, Animal, Machine by Meghan O'Gieblyn. It explores AI, philosophy, religion, literature, and what it will mean to be human in this coming age of AI in the style of a personal essay. One of the best books I've ever read. Just thought I'd recommend if you're looking to investigate the issue more.

Jake Z

Green Daeggs and Ham hosting is such a smooth ride, man

Caleb Peacock

Was Micah trying to do Italian or Jamaican?

Asique Alam

Never change the Daegster he's perfect the way he is!

Ice Slice

Colin, please pull your brother aside and tell him to cool it with the cornball nickname slang bit he’s doing.

Vanzant

I see Jaffe on anything and I listen, awesome episode!

Edson

Stelly going full gossip rag with the Kate Middleton topic lol.

Colin Moriarty

Guys, the M stands for machine…. Please.

Adam Barnes

I agree with Colin on the AI art discussion.

Kelzilla

Jaffee on fire. So funny

Robbie Agnew

lol the first 15 minutes of this podcast is insane.

Robert Graham

Speaking as an outsider, the US president to me is effectively an elected monarch, potentially with far more reaching power than most conventional European monarchs.

David D

When I got tips at my restaurant jobs, I totally used the ATM for my tip deposits, typically night of. The 24 hour accessibility, plus instant security and digital allocation of my income, was a big reason. I never had any concern over security beyond simply confirming the dollar amounts before and after.

PluuusRyan

Im the same when its chris..

Jamie Anderson

Colin I can explain the Cash deposits at the ATM thing. People deposit cash so there is no hold on their funds. Just in case they have to make a deposit for an upcoming transaction

Hustle&Motiv8

Can’t listen if jaffee is on.. man is so unbearable

Brenden

Constellation is my favorite of lsm's podcasts. Hopefully someone will choose the big bang , beginning of the universe topic.

john dorman

Awesome episode, listened at 100x and got all the info I needed

ajwhite
