Per our usual cadence, our conversation is kinetic (and even a little chaotic), and we touch on a ton of gaming topics: AAA publishing, Xbox's decline, subscription models, "anti-woke" gaming, industry griftting, and so on. We also grapple with lots of non-gaming topics, too, often interwoven with the aforementioned: Dreams, the economy, modern views on race and gender, political orthodoxy, et cetera. As usual, our chat is deeply political, sometimes inappropriate, and often heterodox. So, please don't listen if that sort of thing isn't your cup of tea (we understand).

Like you: I have sequential dreams, also involving a combination of college and interestingly middle school . 2024-04-12 21:53:03 +0000 UTCHuh, I hadn’t really thought about it until Jaffe pointed it out, but there hasn’t been a school shooting in a while, or if there has been it wasn’t noteworthy enough to be a “big” news story. At this point it’s never surprising to hear news of such a thing anymore. I’m only 26 and I can tell anyone younger than me that it definitely wasn’t this common even when I was a kid in the early-mid 2000s. Feels like Sandy Hook and the non-response from our government and communities lead to mass shootings in general becoming much more common.

No I'm not keeping my whole ass desktop or laptop next to my TV, no it is not as convenient as turning on my console, you can't even do rest mode. I've tried this experience and it's clunky and shit. Love Jaffe though.

As well as appreciate Jaffe's humble and empathetic view on this topic. This was an amicable debate and I'm glad you both did it. I agree with Jaffe's takes with race disagree with his video game takes and on the other hand agree with many of your gaming takes while disagreeing with how you feel about certain racial/political things. It's true that Colin got his big break on a PlayStation podcast, but I don't think he's popular today and cause he knows PlayStation so well, I think he's popular for his industry analysis. And I think that would only be improved by playing on PC where there's just so many more games and so many more tools for analysis. I look at consoles the same way as Colin looks at Nintendo. I "graduated" from console when I became an adult and was still serious about gaming. I had only ever played with a controller for 26 years and made the choice to switch to M&K but you don't even have to. You can stay on controller. Especially cause Colin says he isn't particularly skilled as a gamer then you're not really losing anything by switching to PC and using controller

2024-04-01 05:43:33 +0000 UTCAs someone who agrees with maybe 75% of Colin’s takes, it can be exasperating listening to him talk with Jaffe, who is fucking amazing at steering these kinds of chats. Here’s a tip for anyone having conversations about important or difficult issues — if you’re having a legitimately good-faith live freeform conversation, and several times that person asks you for data to back up a point they don’t like, you need to start asking THEM for data. You’re no longer having a conversation, you’re in a debate. Maybe it’s a friendly debate, but it’s a debate nonetheless. Don’t let them make unsubstantiated declarative statements while they’re nailing you for doing the same thing. You’re getting your ass kicked because you don’t understand that the rules of engagement have changed. It’s a rhetorical maneuver that you can’t escape from unless you’ve memorized tons of data and statistics, because it never ends at that one data point. It snowballs until they feel like stopping. This isn’t an asynchronous conversation, like Twitter or Reddit, where you can research and cite sources in between posting, this is a live conversation. The only way to keep yourself from drowning is to act in kind.

It’s totally cool if things aren’t meant for you, but to disregard the importance for others to be represented in media is just a weird take. I think I'd really enjoy talking about anything other than politics with him. The one thing I will say is, we don't like playing the "real world woman" for the same reason we don't like playing a "real world guy". We go to gaming for escapism and fantastical adventure, not mundane mediocrity and lectures. If you like that, great, there's tons of Indy games that do that, but you can't say it didn't sell well because of bigotry or the like. We want buff dudes, hot woman, and crazy characters like Sweet Tooth. Kids don't play with toy cars to buckle up and drive the speed limit. Great episode.
