Sacred Symbols+, Episode 376 | Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Spoilercast and Review Discussion

Comments

Gene is so funny, you are all great but he is the goat!

Marco Maluf

I took mushrooms one Saturday and later that day decided to play and got into cosmo canyon and heard the overworld theme with the twangy guitar and I put the controller down and just watched the characters animation play out and was just emotionally taken by everything. Such a beautiful game.

Tanner Denso

I actually went to see Advent Children in the movie theater the week before Rebirth released. It was some kind of promotion for the game. One detail in the movie that threw me was they injected Cait Sith’s new Rebirth voice into the movie. Imagine my confusion! Anyway, fantastic discussion. Love this crew!

Steve Bitto

Gene is so funny

Josef Barker

I don’t really hate video game characters, but fuck Cait Sith. Hate everything about that character. 😅 Great ep guys. Personally, I saw it as Cloud did stop Seph in 1 timeline but Seph manipulated it into another where Cloud failed. Red saying Aerith when she touched him made me feel like she’s real, but if she turned out to be Genova, that wouldn’t surprise me either. Throwing my hat right now on FF7: Reflection.

NeO JD

Did anyone else notice how the STAMPS dog was different in every timeline?

KunaiParty

Wait… seriously?

Kevin White

Why did no one expect Cait Sith to sound Scottish? He sounded the same in Advent Children. Honestly, it'd have been more weird if they changed it.

Birds Aren't Real

Great spoilercast! I love Gene’s theory of 1 main timeline and the other worlds just being created by people’s hopes and dreams in the lifestream. That also explains the fracture in the sky (ie if there’s a fracture it’s a lifestream world, if not it’s the main timeline), with Cloud, Aerith and Sephiroth being able to experience multiple “worlds” at the same time. Good shit.

whY Be

max himself will tell you not to look at him as some sort of lore expert. he is not as engaged on ff7 as some other folks are. i’m not putting him down, if anything you guys are elevating him to a role he never asked for

Gene Park

How could y'all get it so wrong?! Listen, WHY would the developers even bother changing the scene to show Cloud deflecting Masamune if it didn't drastically change something? The convergence Sephiroth spoke of wasn't a one and done deal. The battle at the forgotten Capital is merely the beginning of a process of the timelines merging together that will reach fruition at the Northern Crater when the Reunion occurs. Remember the Portal the party were holding open for Cloud at the Sanctum? It's the same portal that Aerith opened up at the end of Remake just before their fight with the Whispers. That's the sign of a divergence in the timeline. Both outcomes occur when Cloud "saves" Aerith. The flashes of blood, not to mention that Cloud is seeing Aerith in an entirely different light from the rest of the party; looking at him rather unscathed while the rest of the party sees her covered in blood. Plus, if this is the same Sephiroth from AC then why would he bother repeating the same mistake of killing Aerith so she can meddle with his plans in the Lifestream? He needed to isolate her from the party while also keeping her OUT of the Lifestream, so having her in another timeline where she lost Holy, but still alive so she can't coordinate a defense from within the Lifestream itself is the best case scenario for Sephiroth. The unintended consequence of doing this means that Aeirth has reached the same state of being the Sephiroth has where she can affect things with the white whispers while still physically praying from the Sanctum. As being in between life and death like Sephiroth gives her better communion with the planet while still seeing the OG timeline through Cloud's eyes. Lastly, Gene, I won't deprecate your analysis or critical thinking, but you have no right to put Max Dood down for having a different opinion from you. His theory crafting on multiple timelines doesn't make him any less reliable a critic or analyst of the same media than you. I would like to know, for the record, what Max has actually gotten wrong that wasn't an offhand comment amidst one of his streams.

Dan Sing Izzy Rae Lee

Awesome spoilercast! I absolutely adore the game but I absolutely cannot stand the additions of the whispers and lifestream/multiple timeline changes. It's so unnecessarily convoluted and massively took away any impact from the ending. I still absolutely loved my time with the game but am left wondering how much better it would be without all of this nonsense. None of the potential explanations for the events are close to a good as the original. I now kinda need the 3rd game to be different otherwise this new stuff will just piss me off. Last thing that I didn't hear mentioned, couldn't Zack have been brought into the current timeline at the end?

Brannon H

Amazing Spoilercast! Really enjoyed the chapter-by-chapter approach. I’m thinking the start of the next entry will have Yuffie stealing the groups materia in an effort to support Wutai in the war. It’ll be the perfect excuse to de-power everyone in a new game. I also think the war will have a huge affect on the word map, so when we go back to the regions of Rebirth, they will be war-torn and deformed in various ways.

Cody Raburn (ray-burn)

Great conversation so glad to hear the boys talk on this finally ❤️

Sir Poops McGuffin

The chicken retrieval side queet was the worst out of both games combined. The pay off was pretty good but the quest sucked. Almost made me rage quit

Wayde

I’m really hoping the FF7R series is not just an enhanced version of the original game and actually is adding something of it’s own to the story, lore, and legacy.

Philip Dunphy

Great Job fellas!

O

This whole spoilercast has just reaffirmed that this is my favorite game of the gen, so far. I can't wait to play it again, but I think I'll wait to see if there is a PS5 Pro Patch. If they can get it at 60fps with the Quality Mode's graphics, I'll be in heaven

Ryan Zimm

I would think that’s just it except there are countless sequences in this game without playable combat. I think the game design is woven into the narrative deliberately. For example, see the limit break meters of the other characters during the final boss vs. Cloud’s. The mechanics of the game are part of the storytelling. That said, yeah just carving off Zack’s portion for that option was a good way to smoothen out the replays. But it’s an odd choice that they were so specific

Gene Park

max is famous for getting a lot of it wrong what are you talking about lol

Gene Park

40 hours in and I just realized you can transmute more than just items.

Anthony Palerino

In regards to Gene’s confusion about the option to skip Zach content after you beat the game. It’s just a quality of life feature for Hard Mode. If you’re going for the trophy; it would be kinda tedious if you couldn’t skip what ultimately amount to playable cutscenes with no combat. It’s not a reflection on the importance he bares on the story, just lets you get through a long game faster on your second play through.

Cody Raburn (ray-burn)

This was the absolute best spoilercast LSM has ever done, and a big reason I think is because of how Brad structured it to go chapter by chapter so that nothing got overlooked. This is the new standard, fantastic listen.

Shadi Haddad

I wouldn't be shocked if the Intermission episode for this game utilized Zack or Sephiroth given the work that's been done on their playable kit thus far.

Lunar Tear

In response to Gene remarking/joking about Sephiroth loving Aerith when walking through the door of the church (2:55:00 ish) - that was the intention in the original game's original script. One version of the script saw Sephiroth and Aerith as siblings, which is why they both have very pronounced bangs in their original character designs. A subsequent version of the script had them as lovers. Eventually they settled on the dynamic we've come to know in the final version (Zack and Aerith/Cloud and Aerith). But I got a good chuckle at the joke. She does have a way with SOLDIER guys.

Lunar Tear

I agree. Her and Cait Sith brought more humor to the party.

William Simone

My favourite review I have read about this game: “It's a gloriously overindulgent roller coaster of emotions, even if its messier moments tend to drag down the total experience” CBC News.

Robbie Agnew

Yeah I thought that was the plan. Maybe it's play it by ear

Yiorgos

Yuffie was one of the best characters. Dustin, stand down bruhh

NecrumOddBoy

Yuffie is awesome. You are both nuts! Though, to be fair I also don't mind Chadley. So.....maybe my love for this game has clouded my judgement

Ryan Zimm

Hilarious that every single spoilercast I’ve listened to has them getting so much of the timeline stuff wrong. Pretty much the only one who got it was Maximillian Dood

FootLover69

I am 100% in agreement with Dustin! Every time Yuffie would open her mouth I would say “Please god let Sephiroth kill this chick instead of Aerith!”

Kevin White

Colin didn't get good enough

Christopher Gourley

I think I need a monthly Weeb Council meeting like this. Love this lineup

Meatball

Didn’t you guys say when you launched Summon Sign that spoilercasts/review discussions would be there? Not mad, just curious why that changed.

Jared R

Kinda fucked up Colin isn't on this when he said it was shaping up to be one of his all time favorites. Curse you Helldivers 2!
