Sacred Symbols+, Episode 381 | Ken Levine on Judas, Game Dev, and AI

Please welcome legendary games writer, designer, and director Ken Levine to our show. Today, Ken joins me (Colin) almost a year after our last conversation on Sacred+, and now that his upcoming title Judas has been more thoroughly shown-off to the world following its announcement back in '22, he's able to chat more openly. Obviously, we focus quite a bit on Judas itself, and all that surrounds it -- "narrative LEGO" and generation ships and the like -- but we also get into a variety of other topics: The modern games industry, the potential of AI, the price and length of games, the cost of outspokenness, and more. Do enjoy.

Being a month behind SUCKS. Cant wait to hear this convo!

I really enjoyed this interview! Colin and Ken got into some very interesting conversations. I especially liked how Colin brought up his arguments regarding AI and game length. After hearing him make these arguments in past podcasts, it was interesting to hear him bring it up to an actual game developer, and a highly esteemed one at that.

Lucas Hixon

This is awesome.

Zachary T Eldridge

Wow, I genuinely scrolled down the comments at this very moment.

Aidan Cunningham

Great interview. Thanks.

Dave Barr

Great conversation but good lord on the rebirth talk. Ken nailed it, " if it's fun you are willing to play more".... paraphrasing... You are losing interest so mainline it. I wanted more and more so I did everything cuz it kept being fun for me.

Danfromumbrella

Great conversation! On the AI ‘art’ point, my view is that art is human creative expression, so anything an AI produces isn’t art by definition. Some animals and plants produce beautiful images or objects, but it’s never art.

Colin, I would have loved to heard you discuss the thoughts you shared on FF7 about how a player can know what's vital content and what's not. Ken seems to want the audience to see all this hand crafted stuff, so I'd be interested in his take on this industry trend. If you did that, you'd probably run out of time for AI though. Oh well. There's always trade-offs. Maybe next time.

Banger of an interview

James McGivern

Agreed! The greatest content out there.

TB Lightning

Interviews like this make this the best Patreon sub in games media. These are 2 really smart dudes here. Ken being a fellow Jersey boy makes sense, we're pretty cool.

James Pies

He’s totally lying about the lack of a connection to Bioshock. Totally!! The way he pontificates to defend how much it’s not related…

SnipaMasta

Great episode! Ken’s games always have that unique special feel to them. Looking forward to playing Judas.

Eric S

Gonna be waiting for some sort of spaceship lighthouse reveal.

NeO JD

Don’t know how I never made the connection of BioShock to New York City before. That was an interesting tidbit.

NeO JD

Thinking bout JUDAS

Remington Wilson

You’re welcome :)

Conor Wilson

Great conversation, stoked to play Judas

JR

Colin: “I’m always so excited and it happens all the time when I discover something. Why didn’t I ever watch this or why did I never see this or how did I not know about this?” Would you kindly (go play Prey from Arkane)?

CUMSoftware

Yo Mr.White this is my favorite sacred symbols plus yet!

Have you considered considering considerations considerately considerate

I don't think I'll be convinced Judas isn't related to Bioshock in some form until I beat the game. Kudos, Colin, for a great chat!

Meatball

This was a great one. Very good energy. Best part was Ken mentioning that he plays rocksmith as someone with over 2000 hours in the game.

Eric the human

I'm curious too

Jordan Dedo

No edits then?

Kasual7

Two legends in the video game business. This alone is worth the membership.

Michael

A cerebrally stimulating conversation between two intellectual giants. This is one of many reasons I subscribe at the $10 tier and why this is the best podcast period.

Rio_Yeti_

Love the analytics talk! I’m a data analyst and nerd out on this shit. So glad we got another one of these convos. So good!
