Sacred Symbols+, Episode 391 | Moriarty x Jaffe: Slow Times Make Talkative Men

Please welcome storied game designer David Jaffe back to Sacred Symbols+ for another rousing rendition of Moriarty x Jaffe. For today's show, I (Colin) emailed Jaffe four different topics I thought we could discuss, a necessary step considering how slow things have been in our space as of late. But as we often do on this show, we talked so damn much that we only got through the first two topics and figured we'd leave the other two for another time. The first half (or so) of our chat revolves around PlayStation 5 Pro, the still-hypothetical (but obviously quite real) iteration on the standard PS5 that's due to be revealed and released later in 2024. What are our expectations of how Sony will choose to roll the console out? What price can we expect? Do we think new games will be revealed as well? Heck, is console gaming even in a healthy position at all? The second half of our talk veers into games industry minutiae, specifically concerning the mass layoffs that have entire studios (and even publishers) in the grasp of deep uncertainty. Do you know that some 30,000 people have lost their jobs in development and publishing in the last two and a half years? Many of them will never get back in, because there's no room or demand for more dev. As such, in an economic space with so many losers and so few winners, do we need to embrace a smaller development structure in order to get back to full health? Does pain now equate to security later on?

I like Jaffe, except when he talks about politics because of his Trump derangement syndrome, besides he thinks he knows about the subject and he clearly doesn’t t

Amazing don’t understand the hate for Jaffe

Family Falls

TGS seems like a bad place to show the PS5 Pro. The Japanese have largely abandoned home consoles in favor of handheld gaming. The PS5 sold relatively weakly there so the Pro would likely perform even weaker. I suspect it’ll have its own event prior to TGS. Press can then go hands-on at TGS.

Steve Bitto

Agreed. I understand his point, but I don’t think it really fits with game development and what the developers want. I’m sure most game developers do not want to have to get a new job after each game because their company disbanded

Glen Yelenovic

lol it was Dustin on the roof…remember he was saying the rally was near him? Colin must have know !

Andrew Noel

Came to the comment section to point this out. Wow

Jonathan Perez

Well, the start of this episode was unnervingly prophetic to listen to this morning

TeeKay from Oz

Regarding patriotism — A platitude like the national anthem before every sporting event is nationalism, not patriotism. Very different. Patriotism keeps the center of a bunch of bell curves from spreading out and splintering off into ethnic and religious power centers. An essential ingredient for social cohesion in a pluralistic society. It’s a good and necessary thing.

I really disagree with Colin in game development becoming like temporary film production. It devalues the importance of studio culture and how much more complex game production is. Nintendo is a great example of the benefits of long term retention of talent, but even in Sony's camp we have Insomniac which has higher than average retention in the industry with award winning employee benefits. Part of why Insomniac can crank out so many games is because they don't have to waste resources retraining new hires and can instead shift old hires to new projects. If you want to see an example of short term contracts for game development look no further than Microsoft Studios, and specifically 343. Microsoft Game studios are infamous for relying heavily on temporary contract employees they constantly turn through. The disunity that development style had means constantly starting and stopping production.

NinjaDC

This confused the hell out of me too. I don’t care what he likes or doesn’t like but I questioned my own mental health when I heard that. Lol!

Rio_Yeti_

It’s a bizarre idea and I remember a game dev writing in expressing concern #1 and Colin just pedaled on about game cost lol. It just doesn’t make sense in the games industry. A bit tone deaf

Caleb Peacock

Love you Jaffe and all the insanity you bring to these shows

Tristan Kimball

Hey jaffee losing some weight! Keep it up man

Whiskeywhiskey

You guys are a lot of fun to listen to, these episodes are always a pleasant surprise to see in my podcast feed.

OnyxOsprey

I actually think we will see a performance improvement for the ps5 pro. It’s has its own “bespoke” DLSS, PSSR, this is the future. When AI frame generation works it is fantastic for frame generation. Who cares what it runs at native resolution if it’s looks great and plays buttery smooth at atleast 60fps.

In regard to TGS and PS5Pro, I just don’t see why Sony would announce it there. The machine is going to mostly be purchased by North American and European consumers, why put a hardware announcement of this like into a show that is catered to one of your smallest markets? You run the risk of translation eras and incorrect information in terms of specs etc. would be puzzling. Suicide Squad failed for many reasons, including one Jaffe dismisses. First, Suicide Squad just isn’t that popular and I’m not sure why it’s been pushed so heavily. The comics aren’t even that big. Next, the part about “kill the Justice League” was insulting to fans who actually like those characters. Seeing lesser characters poised to kill your favourite childhood heroes was off putting. Flash forward to the way it was done with the SBI input and all fans worst fears about the writing came true, right up to the agenda driven nonsense en masse. Lastly, the game just looked bad from the first showing. Not visually, it is actually a beautiful game, but watching these characters become a generic looter shooter after what so many saw Rocksteady as was insulting. But yes, the Sweet Baby Inc thing mattered, not in a big way but it mattered. It’s epitomized so much of what people are getting sick of in their media.

Hey- it's called GAME VALUE SCORE: https://gamevaluescore.com/

David Jaffe

At some point I'd like to see Colin expand his thoughts on this "each game is developed by a one-off production company" idea because I have two main concerns. 1) This seems like it would erode job stability for the individual devs. Your paycheck comes one game at a time and you best hope after one project is complete you can get hired on for another. The current system may be costly for a publisher but at least an individual developer knows he doesn't have to get back into the job market after each game. 2) This seems like it would erase institutional knowledge if the team dissolves after each game. I feel like it would be very inefficient if you want a sequel to a game. Under this new system a whole new team would form, not the same team that did the original game. I feel like you'd waste time and resources trying to put together the bones/systems of the original game.

Mike Po

What a pleasant surprise. Can we keep these in steady rotation? I love Jaffe & Colin conversations.

Kenneth Koepnick

Did Jaffe say the name of that website that derives a score from a game’s price and metacritic? Maybe I missed it.

Aaron Merrick

PS5 Pro has to show off Ghost of Tsushima 2 right? Right? 😰 Either way, the way it’s looking, I’ll probably upgrade regardless. 4 had Spidey Red, I wonder if 5 eventually gets a Wolverine Yellow.

NeO JD

I don't believe that stat. Colin never said the name of the game years ago so while I like Colin I think he's full of shit sometimes.

KItty Crew

This assumption that all Xbox games are coming to Playstation is an old school assumption. Xbox might not be selling as PS5 but their PC releases circumcises the console gap. It is not as obvious if you look at it from a 2024 lenses and not 2010. Not saying it will bever happen but not surprised if it doesn’t either.

Edwin Garcia

I do think this is the best way to enjoy Jaffe. I do like listening to him but I think he overpowers others on the show so the one on one is perfect.

The GophersLoafers

Jaffe, I'm a conservative, voted for Trump in the past, will vote for him this election as well. I don't hate you, in fact I'm glad to hear your thoughts as you're respectful to others. I'm the only conservative among my friend group but I like talking to people who don't share my viewpoints as it can challenge our positions and make us see things differently. I remember my friend standing up for me as he picked me to be a groomsman in his wedding, had people that don't know me refer to as that "Trumper". He wanted me to be part of his big day we are best friends, so he went to bat for me. There are more sensible people out in the real world than the crazies, the crazies just yell the loudest.

Yiorgos

Yeah I was thrown off as well, I think it's a replacement for Knockback as the Dagster isn't back yet. Should be back next week

Yiorgos

“It doesn’t matter where a game comes from. As long as it’s good, I’m excited” -Guy who refuses to play any game that’s not on Playstation.

Jimmer

There’s a crazy bills fireworks right by my home in Alabama so it’s always surreal hearing Jaffe mention Alabama stuff

Riley henderson

I dont buy this “it doesn’t matter where it comes from” revisionism thats going on. It obviously does, and people are quick to forget just how many “exclusives” Ps4 had in this vein. 2017- Hellblade, Nier Automata, Persona 5, Horizon, Lost Legacy, Nex Machina, Yakuza 0, Danganronpa 3, Nioh, Grav Rush 2, Tales of Berseria, Yakuza Kiwami, GT Sport😂😂😂 youre out of your mind if you think this year is sniffing this lineup, and this was not PS3 gen, this was 7 years ago, exactly 4 years after the PS4’s launch, just where Ps5 is at today. Its not hard to see where the disappointment is at.

Dick Stillhard

Hiring security is pretty fucking baller jaffe

Caleb Peacock

The best episodes. ❤️

Remington Wilson

Followed by the misconception that a micro compact is easier to shoot on target than a long gun just because it's smaller

Seany Mac

“If someone comes to my house I’ll BLOW THEM AWAY” followed by “I think shotguns are too manly for me”. Tell me you clearly don’t own any guns without telling me you don’t own any guns lol. So weird.

Jimmer

Pinch me I’m dreaming

NIGHTMARE NIGHTMARE NIGHTMARE

Can't wait to listen! Is this Saturday's episode early or a replacement episode for Knockback?

badlybrave

I’ve said it before. I’m a simple man. I see David Jaffe, I click the play button.

Drew

When you bring up the “70% of people chose the fidelity option” in that live service game, do you know if that mode is on by default? I imagine that a lot of people just never touch the setting or even know how to, so it probably skews the numbers a bit.

Bogey

Giving the people what they want, more LSM and Jaffe.

Michael Hobbs

Yeah Jaffe, the guy from Summerville definitely blew his head off with the fireworks. He’s dead.

The Devmeister

JAFFE!!!!!

Geoff

It’s funny how time can muddle up the memory of your own opinions. I remember Colin saying Granblue was pretty mid, but now he says it was great 😂. I do the same thing tho.

Diddy’s Dong Quest

These are always pleasant surprises:)

BadHairDayCaveman

Love you Jaffe! Thanks for Twisted Metal 2

Jonathan Turner

Some of the best episodes, even if they go off the wall most of the time lol

Michael

In all seriousness, Jaffe, you're looking slimmer, dude! Glad to see it. I'm trying to do the same

Meatball

Wake up Hun another Moriarty and Jaffe episode dropped

Shawn Kelvey Jr

Off come my pants
