Constellation, Episode 80 | Becoming a Dad, Flying, Appreciating Our Parents, Hypochondria
Added 2024-07-15 16:00:14 +0000 UTC
Welcome back to another Constellation conversation! Dagan finally returns to the fold to host the latest exciting discussion with a cast of some of your LSM favorites. First, Dustin wonders about becoming a dad. As he and his wife Holly prepare for the imminent birth of their first child, the soon to be father asks for the crew's thoughts and advice on parenting. Next up, Ben wants to pick our brains about flying. What do we think about air travel, and what were some of our best and worst experiences in planes and airports? Once the gang lands safely back on the ground, Cog inspires us to appreciate our parents. As they get older, how have our relationships developed with the people that brought us into this world? Closing out this week's conversation, Dagan reflects on his intermittent hypochondria and inquires about his cohost's experience with this specific flavor of anxiety. Do we know people who tend to worry about their health to an unhealthy degree?
I have not thought of the BK kids club in 25 years. Thank you Gene for pulling that out of my memory

I’m a new father. We have a 10 month old boy, and while all the obvious changes to our life are there like making sure he’s eating, sleeping, and pooping, our lives have largely not changed. We still hang out with our friends all the time. We just bring him with us and can’t stay as late as we used to. I get a bit less gaming time but thank you Steam deck for allowing me to just pop back and forth easily between my son and a gaming session. My wife and I still make time for each other. The best time to do that is right after we put him to sleep for the night. I still get my workouts in when I need to because that’s important to me as well.
It’s best this way for everyone because our lives have mostly stayed the same, we’re just filled with so much love because of him. It’s also great for him because it’s made him so social. He’s okay with anyone holding him and he loves everyone because we never hid him away or stayed in because of him. He’s always trying to interact with strangers when we’re out and about. This is the way Dustin. Last thing I’ll add is get a diaper subscription service that delivers to your door. Best investment ever.

Ben's becoming one of my favorite LSM people. Loved hearing about his experiences and insights as a father.

Hey, Dustin.
Have your parents crossed Iowa off their bike list yet? RAGBRAI is pretty big every year. Tons of people riding through. Might be something to check out.

I’m sure Ben’s kids are so well behaved because he’s already stricken the fear of god in them.

Am I the only one that wants Ben to be my dad now?
The confidence and comfort in which he speaks about fatherhood only comes with time, love and dedication

I’m not happy that Colin isn’t on (nor am I upset) but it is SO GOOD to hear Dagan again! You guys are making me reflect on how lucky I am to have all my parents, step and otherwise today.

Biggest and most impactful thing I learned as a new dad of twins (#4 on the way this November) is when another father was visiting us. His young son was disobeying, so the mom took the boy to the back for whatever moment discipline it was, and the father looked at me and said “He needs to realize that he is not the head of our household, I am.” You are the ones in charge, the kids don’t run the house or your lives.

It also depends on state laws too which is super annoying because some states give you way more protection/time than others

To show the massive difference in paternity leave in the USA. My wife, a teacher was given up to 2 months unpaid leave. I, an engineer, got 100 percent paid leave from a private company for four months.
I wasn't even the one who gave birth, wtf America?

The one thing no one ever told us when becoming parents…
Enjoy the each stage, especially those first few years. There are so many stages, they continue to grow and hit new milestones. I just had a moment when carrying my 8 year old to bed… this might be my last time doing this because this dude is getting to big, to tall.

Snoo, as in the bassinet? If that's correct and I googled the right thing. Then I'd say use that money towards a nice crib instead. Speaking from my experience our son wasn't in his bassinet for too long.

Shout out to Dustin. I’m so happy for you. We’re having our first baby in September and we’re excited. I even gave up my game room for our soon to be son. I’m sure you’re excited as well. I want to send many blessings to Dustin, Holly and little baby Ferman.
If Dustin sees this then I wonder if he is getting a Snoo? We are highly considering getting one here at our house. I was just curious.

Wish you the best of luck on your upcoming child Dustin. Fatherhood to a happy one year old son has been wonderful. There has been no other role in my life that is more satisfying, despite the hardships. I'll reiterate Ben's sage advice of "we're built for this". Enjoy yourself!

Good luck Dustin . Had my first this February, its been the toughest and most amazing thing ever. Its a roller coaster of emotions for first time parents for sure, just keep doing the best you can and you'll come out of the worst eventually. Hopefully you get lucky and have a sleepy baby, my guy still wakes up every hour sometimes. Best whishes

It’s going to be an unmitigated shit show in the comments. 😅
