Sacred Symbols, Episode 326 | Stirring Ghosts (Video)

Going through this episode and I was enjoying it until the discussion on Dragon Age: The Veilguard, where something really annoyed TF out of me. And I know that right now, I'm basically making my criticism into a void because Colin doesn't take criticism well, especially from his fans (who fund his f*cking company in the first place; ironic, huh?). I get people getting annoyed that you can't have large breasts or a big butt in the new game. I do think that's a strange omission. But top scars? That offends and annoys you? Are you f*cking kidding me? Sure, you can say it's identity politics, propaganda, and whatever other synonym you can find on Merriam Webster or Twitter. But seriously - how does this affect you for the worse? Games, movies, books, and songs SHOULD be political and take a stance on things. And if that offends you? Move on or engage in insightful discourse on it that isn't based on a stupid Twitter post. Also, how f*cking hypocritical of you, Mr. Moriarty. Colin is intrigued and interested in politics (as am I), and wants more politics in games. Yes, games are too afraid of making political statements. The only major game of a recent release I can think of that is inherently political is Disco Elysium. Cyberpunk 2077, Far Cry 5, Watch Dogs, The Last of Us: Part II - all of these games have very intriguing political undertones, but are too afraid of taking a hard stance. Especially The Last of Us: Part II, which is partly inspired by Neil Druckmann's experience living in Israel amidst the the Israeli–Palestinian conflict, is slightly analogous to the W.L.F and Seraphite conflict in the game. But the game doesn't really have a message there other than "both sides have bad parts to them." Same with Cyberpunk 2077. It's a game about taking down the corporate overlords but it doesn't offer a message there, and is moreso focused on V's existential crisis. It's even more ironic when you realize how much crunch there was in Cyberpunk 2077's development. My point here is that political intrigue makes a game more meaningful, whether you agree with it or not. I swear, a lot of people who love Star Wars 1977 would abhor it if they knew that the protagonists, the rebels, were based on the Vietcong, and that the Empire was partly inspired by the U.S. government. People insert their beliefs into the things they make. So for Dragon Age: The Veilguard to have top scars and no abilities to have large breasts is what the developers want. WTF is so wrong with that? America (which is where most listeners of Sacred Symbols are tuning in, most likely) has freedom of speech. Yes, that also means we have freedom to criticize, but it seems as though so many people want to live in a society that fosters homogeneous thought because some people are too damn dense to accept that others have a different line of thinking from them, and just categorize it as "identity politics" or "propaganda." Give me a f*cking break. I appreciate Chris somewhat challenging Colin here on this point, but, at the same time, hardly anyone besides Jaffe challenges Colin at LSM. And I think Jaffe should challenge Colin harder. Dustin sometimes challenges Colin, but that's usually in video game topics that are of little consequence. I know Colin won't give a sh*t if he reads this as LSM is doing well. But still. I knew Chris definitely disagreed with Colin here but he's just too laidback or afraid to challenge him more intensely. And as much as I love Colin, he really does need a check when he states some bullsh*t. Can't believe some f*cking chest scars bother you in a video game. Give me a f*cking break and grow the f*ck up.

Idk if I agree but I noticed that they didn’t go into talking any the weaponry shown or possible gameplay mechanics - ya know… the fun stuff!

The Great Santini

I love how Colin chooses to aggressively pronounce any Japanese word in the most American way possible ❤️

Why is my McDonald’s apple pie Genshin Impact themed?

I had an absolutely horrendous theatre experience when seeing Terrifier 2 a couple years ago. It was a limited release where I am, so we could only go on one weekend. There was probably us, two other couples and a group of probably 15 high schoolers who obviously snuck in. These kids were not only talking the whole movie, throwing popcorn at each other and us, but playing TikTok videos out loud, running up and down the stairs and making shadow puppets on the projector throughout the movie. Anytime we, the others, or even the staff would try to do something about it, they’d momentarily leave but then just come back. Unfortunately, anytime I think about watching this movie again, I just get pissed thinking about that shitty experience. Prior to that, when I went and saw Click back in the day, the power went out about 40 mins into the movie. When it came back on, they gave us the option to get a refund, or if enough wanted to, they would start the movie over again. Most of us stayed.

Freaked me out for a second 😂

Mario Diosdado

Off of that, did anybody else (during their childhood) spend time doing jump spin kicks in the pool, as if they were the upcoming opponent in the next Street Fighter? 😂

Dustin talking about the pronunciation of things (Lu-Narrr, in this case) got me thinking about my childhood past, a bit before internet was a real thing. I remember pronouncing Ryu as Rye-You, and Raiden being Ray-Den. Now, I know Ray-Den is acceptable with MGS but NOT Mortal Kombat, but it was the ‘Wild west’ back then. Anybody else have memories of learning things the wrong way? 😂

2:56:40 did bill clinton just slide across Chris’ screen?

Light The Idea

It has been this way for some time, I think they just have an issue critiquing game design. Even games they would all ‘score highly’ are shrouded in negative conversation. The industry conversations around strategy are always good, conversations on actual games always bad.

Light The Idea

Ignoring twitter culture war controversies would be a nice change to the show IMO

Sam Strajack

I agree. A lot of conversations around major releases have been more of a “let’s talk about the conversation around the game” rather than talking about the game itself. I mean, we got our first major 1st party reveal (besides Astro Bot, which was excellent) in YEARS and the game itself, setting, jump in time/setting, new mechanics, etc. were either not discussed or barely commented on.

Jacob

On the topic of guides, how anyone would figure out all those special bots challenges in Astro Bot Playroom without one is beyond me.

Andrew Fast

Industry conversations are much more at home here, discussions around the fundamentals of the actual games? Seems only Chris has the eye for that.

Light The Idea

I was excited to hear the thoughts on dragon age and the new ghost game. Instead two conversations about scars and the gender of the protagonist. How games are discussed here has fundamentally plummeted the last few years. It is seemingly just discussions on what someone said on twitter rather than the actual game.

Light The Idea

Man its getting really tiresome hearing Chris making excuses for abhorrent propagandised shit (like top surgery scars in a fucking fantasy game) constantly. You are a joke and a moron that understands nothing of the situation while talking absolute shit. Don't have kids.

SkeetsOfRage

holy hell Dustin if the guy who made Hazel you are talking about is or is in the same league as this guy the cherno on youtube who wrote Walnut... that's very cool. Brilliant folks.

The Original McDonald's Breakfast Burrito was good for one key reason for me. The Hot Picante Sauce.

VICIOUSVICTOR TEE

A lot of games to get through this week. One omission surprised me. Contra inspired, Iron Meat! Perhaps I missed it. I'll be checking out the game this weekend. Great to have you back Dustin!

My theory with Bloodborne is that Bluepoint is doing a full remake for PS6 launch.
