Sacred Symbols, Episode 219 | Oh, Oh, Oh, Jimmy's Cryin'

It's clear: PlayStation's problems with Microsoft's in-motion purchase of Activision-Blizzard run deep. The financial implications are enormous, of course, but in going public with his dismay in potentially losing Call of Duty on PlayStation platforms beginning in 2028, CEO Jim Ryan illustrates Sony's concern is material enough that it's willing to take a PR beating to make its point. Our theory? They're simply trying to buy time as they continue to sort out their strategy and make sense of a growing consensus that doesn't necessarily cater to what they do best. Nonetheless, we discuss the wide-ranging, ongoing situation between Microsoft, Sony, Activision-Blizzard, and various global economic regulators that will make or break the deal. Other news this week includes the announcement of PSVR2 game Firewall: Ultra, Tencent's growing acquisition of Ubisoft, the mostly-missed confirmation that Returnal is indeed coming to PC, the reveal of Cyberpunk 2077's DLC, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Can Sony gleam anything from Microsoft's mismanagement of Halo and 343? With Spider-Man 2 rumors percolating, what are we most looking forward to in the sequel? Have we reached a point of irreversible open-world fatigue? Did someone really try to make the case that 'Chicago-style' pizza is the 'real' pizza?

Please Note: The video version of Episode 219 will not be published until the evening of Saturday, September 10th. At that time, the audio version of the show will also be updated. This is to accommodate news both from Friday's Marvel event and Saturday's Ubisoft showcase

As much as you like making fun of Jimmy, I think Dustin was right highlighting the lies behind Microsoft's initial intent, also Colin you've been hellbent on insisting MS would never make COD exclusive, yet here we are. Funny you've never acknowledged that during this podcast like it never happened. I hope this whole deal will be blocked, because MS can't nurture their own studios for shit (look at 343 and Halo fiasco) so they go out swinging their money dick buying studios with established hits. I find it pathetic and Sony is rightly in defensive mode. Oompa Loompa Phil Spencer pretending to be the nice guy and Jim exposing his lies is a show of strength, not weakness.

Chris, I absolutely love Smac. My sister took me there a few times when I was in high school cause she went to NYU and it was absolute heaven!

Michael

This fucking thumbnail… it’s been almost a week and I still chuckle when I see it on my phone.

Nikitas Gagas

We really have no idea what's happening here, but we are looking into it.

Colin Moriarty

It's insane how bad some of this functionality is.

Colin Moriarty

LOL.

Colin Moriarty

The first Zelda isn't directionless. It's a contained world, and you don't even need to see it all or get everything in the game to beat it.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you.

Colin Moriarty

It's a scary prospect, but certainly interesting.

Colin Moriarty

I don't know.

Hopefully this gets addressed, I did the same thing as you, download and turn on in my car on my way to work. I download 3-4 of the podcasts and put them in a playlist and then keep track this way of what i'm listening to. This is a real bummer.

Why can't I download the audio file anymore? Is this a removed feature from the app that got updated a few days ago, or something SacredBagels have disabled 9n their end? I cannot listen to the podcast, for what ever reason, it seems the app goes into sleep mode when the screen is off after a few seconds. Plus, I'd like to save bandwidth on my cellular data plan if I can prel9ad an episode over Wifi.

I know Colin, youve got a lot of beef with the PSN store. One of the worst things for me is the search function. I just put in "last of us" and had to scroll maybe 50 items until I found the remake. It's been like this for years, at least since PS3. I cannot believe they can't make a better search algorithm.

How about a boxing match between Phil Spencer and Jim Ryan, refereed by Shigeru Miyamoto and hosted by Geoff Keighley with Gabe Newell as a special guest? Geoff should consider it, think of all the ads and sponsors you can fit into that match.

Dustin was right on the money with his open world game design discussion. But if I may, I’d like to argue against Colin’s BotW points. He says that Breath of the Wild doesn’t feel like Zelda, and is directionless, but loves the first Zelda game, which is much more so. He claims that Zelda was not in need of a reinvention, but I say that 3D Zelda design had been largely stagnant since Ocarina of Time. Majora’s Mask, Wind Waker, TP, and Skyward Sword largely followed the format established by OoT. As for the game not “feeling” like Zelda, I would argue that Zelda has changed drastically throughout the history of the franchise, the aforementioned 3D Zeldas notwithstanding. Zelda 1 is vastly different from Zelda 2, which is different than ALttP, which is different than OoT. So if anything Breath of the Wild is a natural progression for the series. Anyways love the show as always. Keep up the great work!

Chris was on fire this episode. Loved his takes.

I love this discussion on AI and computer assisted creation. This idea was explored in Andrew Niccol's 'S1m0ne' staring Al Pacino. A director creating a lifelike actress for his film, using the power of a computer containing a data base of every motion picture.

I had made a fairly lengthy comment about QA and Automated Testing last night...and I noticed its completely gone this morning. What happened to it ?
