Sacred Symbols+, Episode 223 | The Past, Present, and Future of Wrestling Games

Please welcome Ian Scherer of 616Entertainment to the show. I (Colin) invited Ian onto + to discuss the wide spectrum and rich history of wrestling video games, of which he is a bona fide expert and of which I know very little. After all, my days of wrestling gaming began with Pro Wrestling on NES and ended sometime in the SNES and Genesis era just a few short years later. As it turns out, I've missed a vibrant near-three decade run of amazing fare, both licensed and unlicensed, from studios both still-alive and defunct, trying to both simulate the real thing and provide more arcadey experiences. From WWF, WCW, and WWE to Fire Pro, Rumble Roses, and even 5-Star Wrestling: We touch on as much as we can as I try to get a grasp on the genre, the playerbase, and the pursuit of the perfect wrestling experience.
Was scrolling though old podcasts and saw this and had to listen. When I graduated the 5th grade in NYC, my mom bought me a PlayStation and my first game was WCW vs The World. Fucking epic shit dude. Also the best wrestling game for me is No Mercy and Wrestlemania 2000. My grandma bought me Wrestlemania 2000 for Christmas when it released and she had to pay supply and demand price’s because the game was sold out. I will always remember those two awesome gifts.

I've been behind on LSM content (and my podcast feed in general lol) since I was on vacation a few weeks ago so I'm just getting to this in my queue but I just wanted to say it's super cool that you had Ian on.
I actually was a fan of his channel for awhile and then I found out he was a fan of yours when he had one of your shirts on in one of his videos a few years back. It definitely popped me huge lol.

Hm. If you're listening to audio, then there shouldn't be ads. (There definitely aren't; the audio is totally different on our RSS feed here, so it's impossible.)
If you're hearing or seeing ads on video, that's because we only render each video once. We only promise early access to video content, not ad-free. We do, however, provide timestamps to skip those ads. (If you're curious why, it's because it's very time-intensive to render and upload sometimes 4+ hour videos, and it also hurts us algorithmically on YouTube to have multiple files that are similar or near-identical.)

Quick question, why do my Patreon episodes have all the commercials still baked in? It's not the end of the world, but I did think this was part of the Patreon perk.

This episode was so nostalgic and wonderful. Hoping the AEW video game delivers as i loved all the AKI games. Will be a day 1 purchase for me if it does.

Love me some wrestling games. They haven’t been great since the mid-late 2000s. I think the AEW game has a chance to be that great.

Man when you said it was about wrestling I was hoping so much that it would be Ian and I am very happy that it is. He is the one who introduced me to sacred symbols.

The best wrestling game to me is still Def Jam: Fight for NY. Not traditional wrestling, but it takes AKI’s wrestling engine from their N64 games and made it even better. Add the over the top finishers like Redman punching people in the nuts, the star studded lineup (Carmen Electra, Danny Trejo, Henry Rollins, etc) and it’s a game that will never be replicated, sadly.

I don’t play these games anymore (or watch wrestling), but I used to. The first couple of Smackdown! games on the PS1 were the golden era to me.

On behalf of your patrons who are both wrestling and wrestling game fans, thank you for this episode. Great conversation from both you and Ian, and we always appreciate anyone like yourself who's not really into wrestling but is curious rather than patronizing.

Ian's 616 channel is incredible. I've been a fan of his for almost as long as Colin and CLS/LSM. He is an authority on all things wrestling games but arguably as strong in Mortal Kombat content. He ventures into other games too, generally PlayStation nostalgic gaming. The man even made an entire retrospective series on the Halloween movie franchise which continues this year!
Not trying to be too pushy on his behalf, but I respect his hustle and attention to quality content. If any new LSM fans dig this interview, I highly recommend giving his content a try.
