Sacred Symbols, Episode 220 | Assassin's Greed

Just when you thought mega-publisher Ubisoft finally 'got it' when it came to Assassin's Creed, they went ahead and simultaneously announced three brand-new AC games for console. This is of course a change from their more recent strategy of treating this particular franchise with more care; they now seem fine with potentially running it back into the ground. What's going on at Ubisoft? And what does the future of Assassin's Creed hold? Plus: Trouble may be brewing at Sony second party studio Deviation, Team Ninja's Rise of the Ronin surprises at State of Play, the Yakuza franchise is turning over a new leaf, Babylon's Fall goes bye-bye, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Are we excited about under-the-radar third-person shooter Evil West? How long will AAA games stay at $70 before the price goes up once more? Is the drama around Forspoken's dialogue a sign of rote political and social discourse? Why does Chris keep talking about a clown wearing his father's clothes?

I get it if Souls games aren’t your thing, but Sekiro and Nioh are the same? I wouldn’t even say they’re similar outside of the checkpoint system. Also, if Destin wants to get good at fighting games it’s about practice, not your controller. I’ve played over 10k matches with Dhalsim in SFV and only got to Super Platinum. Just takes dedication.

Xemphanis

Hexe actually sounds like the most interesting one, to me.

Colin Moriarty

True dat. So much has happened I forgot. You're pretty good at your job.

Josh Walker

I’m super excited for the future of Assassins Creed going forward. Them announcing Hexe might’ve been a little silly but Mirage and Red sound like they have two different scopes. Also by the time Mirage comes out it’ll have been like 3 years since Valhalla, I think that’s plenty of time to develop a smaller AC game.

Wyvborn

They shouldn't be editing anything for anyone, they have that kind of power.

Colin Moriarty

To each his own, no doubt.

Colin Moriarty

The roles were reversed with Destiny. What happened?

Colin Moriarty

Disney can be selective in where they refuse to censor their movies. Where I'm from, they refused to edit out certain scenes in Lightyear and the latest Thor movie based on the request of the censorhip board and just decided not to release the movie in my country. Still came out on Disney+ though, not sure if censored.

Sam Lee

Sony probably can't fathom why Microsoft wouldn't take CoD from them, because if the roles were reversed...

Josh Walker

Ubisoft could hook me up to an IV drip of assasins creed, especially if they’re on the caliber they have been of late. Weird how nobody’s as upset about the multiple yakuza games announced as you are the ac games. But to each their own.

Kyle

I appreciate you taking the time to respond. My point is that it never left and pretending like it did puts a lot of people in danger - not you or me, but people in bad places surrounded by bad people. You're a man of history. Everything you say and do is in regards to historical context. How can there be a world where our history isn't repeated? Someone mouthing off on Twitter doesn't bother me. What bothers me is someone seeing what you can get away with on Twitter and then taking those bad intentions into the real world. We can't dismiss someone's plight just because it's not our own. We are not our problems, but I will not put someone down if, in this moment, they can't see that for themselves. These conversations always focus on the extremes and leave out a lotta of people going through real stuff.

Dennis Johnson

Probably I came on too strong, my bad. "Disputing" I don't think I've heard, true. My main point is more than you can totally pretty much not use keyboard and mouse for gaming, so the automatic association that comes up some times "PC = K&M" feels weird to me. This is me standing down :)

Manuel Nascimento

I don't hate AC, it's just not for me.

Colin Moriarty

I respect your opinions and experience, but I think a lot of people are in pursuit of fleeting and ever-rarer racism. Which is how it should be. So why revive it?

Colin Moriarty

It's why I just shrug whenever I see or hear that sort of pushback. It's vacant of reason.

Colin Moriarty

Jet Brody.

Colin Moriarty

Who is disputing that you can play most games with a controller? This has been true for 20 years.

Colin Moriarty

Lol you guys are such AC haters!!! You guys complain and make them a punchline no matter what they do, despite apparently never playing them in the modern era. I really hope I can call in someday to have a discussion about this. It’s the only thing I feel you guys are so way off base about on a regular basis. Appreciate you, all with love

Chuck Rude

I'm 33 years old and from MS - racism has been alive and well for a long time. The internet age and specifically Twitter have only made it inescapable to once seemingly unaffected groups. Hell, playing the COD beta this weekend felt just like I was in 2007 with all the shit I heard in those lobbies. Twitter and the 24 hour news cycle are easy targets. Death, doom, and destruction sell; you can now throw in whatever "ism" you want and that'll sell too. We cannot continue to let twitter and other public garbage dumps dictate how we think about a certain topic. There are racists on Twitter. There are people too quick to yell racist on Twitter. Being lost in the shuffle are a lotta folks just trying to get through their lives - folks that feel more comfortable by making a certain bio because the thought of someone welcoming them into a community is better than speaking in a game lobby and immediately getting degraded, when all they wanted to do was let it be known they were ready to communicate and have fun. Colin, as someone who left Twitter (social media) because people were unfair and holding wrong ideas about you, I hope this is something you can come to understand.

Dennis Johnson

It's crazy that people that don't know you start calling you racist because you don't like something that has a "minority" in it. This completely diminishes any possibility of constructive discussion. Yes there are people saying racist shit on the Internet but it's the Internet people are horrible here but the vast majority of people I've met in real life don't care about race. Also, the little girls that see the little mermaid and show excitement for her being black are just being used as tools to say "look skin color matters" when it doesn't, kids don't care about skin color they just like things they do, when I was a little kid I loved Blade (still one of my favourites) I could care less that he is black I just thought he was cool, he was and still is.

Fotis Lyto

The Babylon's Fall News reminds me of when I was younger I played Fracture all the time! The multiplayer I thought was pretty fun, but it had no player base. So, I would just be 1v1 matching with the same guy over and over, and we would test our skills. Good times. Dead games can be fun in their own right.

PuppiesOnParade

Just a quick note to say obvious things about PC gaming but I feel like I’ve heard some minor misconceptions on the show or from the audience. You can play most games with a controller, especially I’d say if a game is on a console the PC version supports controller. PC gaming is not = keyboard and mouse. You can play however it feels better. I’ve been on PC most of my life (am 38), but had PS2, PS4 and PS5 - I play however it feels better on a particular game: some with controller (Kena, Scarlet Nexus), some with mouse and keyboard (Control, Cyberpunk). Also, if you have a nice chair and a decent sized monitor you don’t have to be in “desk mode”, but of course it’s not like being on the couch with a 65 inch TV (though you could go for one of those 40-ish inch LG OLEDs on your big desk). Just some info, it’s not like it warrants a major correction on the show. Cheers all.
