Sacred Symbols+, Episode 231 | Nine Games That Actually Need A Remake

Between The Last of Us: Part I and the rumored Horizon: Zero Dawn 'remake' for PS5, PlayStation gamers are increasingly asking themselves some logical questions, like: Is this a trend? And if so, aren't we going in the wrong direction? Today, we gather to discuss nine games -- the oldest from 1994 and the newest from 2015 -- that deserve a 'remake' treatment a heck of a lot more than what seems to be getting it. From FPS to JRPG, from open-world to linear, we think these are nine adventures from both first and third party that could use a new coat of paint, and perhaps a whole lot more.

I got the plat in Resistance 3, I finished R2 (you needed like 1000kills in MP to plat it, so not doing that), never played R1, but I gotta say there wasn't much to this franchise outside of signature Insomniac cool weapons, and even that was done better in Ratchet&Clank games. It didn't look eceptional, gameplay wasn't amazing, subject matter (alien fps) fell from grace with the military shooter's rise, and even Sony itself had better shooters at the time, that resonanted with people more. R3 felt unfinished when it came out, too, since it was released in the 'everything needs 3D and Move support' era, and, for instance, I remember the final cutscenes played without sound for me, and the ending felt almost as rushed as the one in Rage. Move controls with the sharpshooter were pretty bad, too, from what I remember (you couldn't reach a frequently used button with your fingers, and you couldn't remap the controls - I ended up using the side of my palm). Kz2 looked great as a game when it released with all of its postprocessing, and weapon depth of field effects (it looked good not as a console game, but as a game period, then), and it placed you in the middle of a battlefield, with mechs, and tanks around, meanwhile in Resistance you were running through empty villages and power plants, and killing bugs. Even the story in Resistance never gained enough momentum to be interesting, and it moved at a snails pace from game to game. Shadowfall aside, KZ was just better in every way - there's a giant chasm when it comes to the Resistance and Killzone Vita games quality, too. Let Resistance rest. It did its part as a PS3 1080p launch title.

MISZCZOGRZMOT

Yes.

Colin Moriarty

I would imagine that's on its way back, too.

Colin Moriarty

It's cool that some folks have kept it alive.

Colin Moriarty

Indeed.

Colin Moriarty

Yeah man, it was a first foray for them. Could be cool to revisit.

Colin Moriarty

China Town Wars would be cool. I liked DKR on DS.

Colin Moriarty

Does Sony own the Alundra IP? I'm not even asking for much here...I feel that would be an awesome remake to have similarly in style to what we're going to be getting with the Suikoden 1 & 2 release that's coming in a few months.

Stephen King

I can’t believe you guys didn’t say Vagrant Story, this game is ripe for a remake, it could be amazing remade as a tough as nails souls like action rpg.

Scot CRUICKSHANK

I miss Warhawk. It hit at the perfect time for me as I had finished university & had so much free time to put into the game. I even reached the top 800 in the world. First game that got me into multiplayer games & into a clan I spent years with

Shaun Sannerude

Great episode guys. Colin, I played FF6 for the first time a few months ago via the Pixel Remasters on my steam deck. As a new a player I still thought it held up incredibly well in terms of it's plot and music and characters. Seeing it all presented on today's hardware truly would be something special.

Erin Eden

Loved Warhawk on the PS3! It was my go-to online game back then and it would be an excellent choice for Sony’s new live service initiative.

Rick the Turnip

GTA: Chinatown Wars & Diddy Kong Racing would be my most requested.

Brandon Soto

Hit and Run would be cool.

Colin Moriarty

It's strange they've not even touched it up for Pro a la 2016/17.

Colin Moriarty

The Legend of Dragoon I feel like is coming, at least in port form.

Colin Moriarty

That would be even more insane, but we shall see. I'm surprised it didn't happen in prelude.

Colin Moriarty

Perhaps. But too much of a good thing is a bad thing.

Colin Moriarty

At this point, I just want ports.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you.

Colin Moriarty

Indeed.

Colin Moriarty

I'm surprised they haven't gone back to Fallout 3.

Colin Moriarty

It's happening.

Colin Moriarty

It's surprising this hasn't happened.

Colin Moriarty

They should definitely get the big ones over, to start.

Colin Moriarty

Indeed.

Colin Moriarty

Yeah, it's a shame.

Colin Moriarty

That game is horrible, LOL.

Colin Moriarty

We just like releasing things at that time.

Colin Moriarty

<3

Colin Moriarty

The Jak and Daxter Series, Metal Gear Solid 1-4, and Simpsons: Hit and Run.

Jordan Fugate

It's hypercritical but Bloodborne could use a remake. Just because the original code is in shambles and the game needs to be in 60 fps

Ryan

I like how I know you guys well enough that I knew most of these would be your picks. I need a FF7R style The Legend of Dragoon. Side note, this makes me wonder what a Neil and ND gritty JRPG would look like. 🤔

NeO JD

People are really quick to levy any sort criticism on The Last of Us and Horizon, and a lot of the points against those remakes are certainly valid, but I will be very interested to see if people have the same reaction with God of War 2018. I would imagine that’ll be next, considering it doesn’t have a native PS5 version and it’ll also have an Amazon TV series. If it does indeed get a remake shortly after Ragnorak, I’ll be curious if people turn a blind eye to it because I don’t feel like that franchise gets nearly as much hate as The Last of Us and Horizon. And I don’t understand that because The Last of Us and Horizon are much more impactful games for me personally. To each their own though.

Jim Capron

I am beginning to wonder if Sony is trying to “Star Wars” their franchises. This is horizon video game remake, this is the horizon Tv show, and this is horizon movie. Oh if you have PSVR you can experience the world of Horizon. Where is the oxygen? I can’t breathe. I liked the lists both of you came up with. I would like to see something I missed out on like resistance, kill zone or silent hill.

Mitchell Lundsberg

With rare exceptions something should be 2 gens old at LEAST before a remake is considered (10 years old minimum). Games that aren't playable in some form should be prioritized. The fact that the backlogs for Sony's first party studios aren't natively playable is a disgrace honestly. Your history brought you here Sony. Every Sly, Jak, Ratchet, Infamous, God of War, Resistance, Killzone, Little Big Planet game should be affordable and playable on modern hardware. (Streaming doesn't count) If you won't give us new entries at least let us play the old shit without having to dust off the fatty that's in my parent's shed.

Bryce Mccloskey

Great episode guys

John

Aw yes very topical.

Shane Pryor

Shinkawa is so good.

Noah Friscopp

As I’ve gotten older I’ve really grown to appreciate the metal gear solid art. I love it.

Quintin Propes

Not PlayStation-centric, necessarily, but I will die on the hill that one of the earlier Elder Scrolls games deserves the ground-up remake treatment (I'd be personally keen on III: Morrowind). Even more so, I would love for the first game in The Witcher trilogy to be remade... Gameplay wise, it is bad and fails to hold up IMO. I think the appeal for me also resides in the fact that this title was never brought to consoles. CD Projekt is asking for third-party partners, so I would propose one of these partners bring my hypothetical project to fruition

NotSkyWalker

I would’ve said KOTOR :(

Noah Friscopp

In MGSV you can’t stand on your tip-toes, though.

Noah Friscopp

I’d like an Uncharted Golden Abyss as it’s stuck on a platform that Sony killed off

Andrew Dickins

Sony should just port over all first party games from PS3. And later PS1 and PS2. They bougt Nixxes for pc, so why not have another dedicated team/studio do it? Do remasters/remakes with a new trophy list without MP and other bad trophies and with modern controls. And start with all Resistance, Infamous, Killzone games. Sony should also make all God of War and Ratchet & Clank games available. I think this would be profitable for Sony, but maybe not enough profit for them to do it.

Morten Madsen

Metal gear 1-4 are the big ones. Give them mgs5 gameplay and it would be huge

Ryan

Uncharted 1, Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper, Resistance, Killzone, Infamous. And that's just first party

beeperbeeper5

Weird that they didn’t let them do resistance 4 because it was too similar to the last of us when you have days gone being loosely similar as well. I imagine maybe it was the time frame where it was pitched. I’ve never been able to play the resistance games been dying to

Kenneth Oms

Clearly the answer is the King Kong game on PS2. Certified classic!

NoPausePaul

Fact: I look forward to Saturday episodes like I used to look forward to Saturday morning cartoons. 😊 Would you ever consider dropping them earlier on Saturday or are there metric reasons for 12:00 Eastern?
