KnockBack, Episode 244 | The Exorcist (film)

There's something about the time The Exorcist came to theaters, in that it almost certainly made the experience a hell of a lot more frightening than it would be today. When this film launched in December of 1973, one can imagine going to see it, being completely horrified, and then sitting at home. No internet, no cable TV, no phone to keep you busy. Just whatever's over the air and your landline, and hopefully no intrusive thoughts. Based on a novel released a couple of years prior, The Exorcist is a world-class example of Catholic horror told through the eyes of a tortured family that seems to have it all and a troubled priest who knows more than he should. What makes it so scary is that, like so many works of religious-themed horror, it feels like it could happen, at least in some sense. And, well, our recent viewing has left us with much to say on the matter.

Oh man.

Colin Moriarty

I'm dying over here laughing at the mental image of Harry climbing a tower at Hogwarts only to see Dumbledore giving it to McGonagall. My office mate must think I'm crazy.

Richard

I said that, not Dagan!

Colin Moriarty

That would be a fun one. "Fun."

Colin Moriarty

You’d think the making fun of kids who couldn’t read out loud would embarrass them and make them get better as Dagan said but boy did it not. Eventually my teachers would just pick on kids who actually wanted to read to make it through their syllabus on time.

I'm old, a Joey Lawrence reference is never lost while I'm here. "woah" 😊 This movie is wild. Growing up, one of my aunts loved horror movies. As a child I watched I watched them with her. The Exorcist is the only one that made her uneasy. I have not watched it since the 90's. I do want to read the novel one day. I wonder if you both can squeeze in something like the film Misery.

LOL.

Colin Moriarty

Battlestar. -_-

Colin Moriarty

We'll get back to it, but not anytime soon.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you for listening.

Colin Moriarty

=\

Colin Moriarty

That could be neat.

Colin Moriarty

That's on your end, unfortunately. Sorry!

Colin Moriarty

Right?

Colin Moriarty

I see.

Colin Moriarty

You should!

Colin Moriarty

Yes. =)

Colin Moriarty

Oh no.

After Donnie Darko and Halloween in Oct

BatmanBeyond

I think Colin accidentally referred to Stranger Things' character "Eleven" as "Six" towards the end of this episode. Great episode otherwise! Hope we get more horror in Knockback!

Andres

With peace and love, can we please continue with LOST?

Ryan Rumsey

Great movie. Great filmaking. I hope it didn't make more people go to exorcists instead of mental health professionals. Exorcisms should be like at the same way labotomies or conversion therapy is.

I love this movie and the book might be the best novel I've ever read. I wish the alternative cut "the version you've never seen" didn't exist though. The spider walk just doesn't work and the extra demon shots are useless. Also people call it the directors cut when it's not. It's the writers cut, Blatty asked for that stuff in as a favour and Friedkin obliged for the re-release. The directors cut is the original version.

Now do Exorcist 3 next

One of the biggest mistakes in modern media, was not making "Scary Stories to tell in the dark" a hand drawn animated movie.

NotYurRealDad

I don’t know if this was an issue with my download or with the master recording, but the last twenty or so minutes of this played back at like 1/3 speed and it was absolutely hilarious. Both C & D sound very cartoonishly drunk. Great conversation regardless!

I was in special ed for all 12 years of public school. With the exception of a couple of "mainstream" classes. I'd give my left nut to go back and make the grade like everyone else.

DeadHooliganXXL

Guess I’ll finally have to watch this today

This is legit the best part of my week! this movie scared the holy hell out of 10 year old me. First the shining then this October is going to be fun!

Jesse spivey

Similar story from my mom. She saw it in theaters at release and was so terrified afterwards that she refused to leave the parking lot for hours.

My favorite story about this flick is actually about my grandpa. He went to see it with my grandma shortly after coming back from Vietnam (and we all know he must've seen some shit lol) and halfway through the movie they had to leave because of how freaked out he was. Now I don't know how true any of that was or is it just one of those family tall tales (similar to fishing stories lol) that's grown over the years but dammit, I want to believe it haha.

Josh Gamez

I'm about to spider walk myself downstairs to put this one on!
