Sacred Symbols+, Episode 233 | How G4 Died

Please welcome Peter Pischke to the show. Peter is a freelance journalist whose latest work focuses-in on the slow-rolling demise of G4. Founded in 2002 and mothballed about a decade ago, G4 was once a vibrant television network dedicated to video games and nerd culture. Its contemporary revival, on the other hand, launched late last year and has been an abject failure by any metric. Peter's reporting suggests the end is nigh for G4 yet again, and he takes time to go behind the scenes into their "anti-sexism" rant that went viral earlier this year in particular, which he identifies as the death knell for the company. If you're interested in the behind-the-scenes machinations of the industry, this episode's for you.

Sacred Symbols+, Episode 233 | How G4 Died

Comments

You're not wrong, but Frosk is not the person to deliver the message. She is a terrible person with no credibility. Her Tweet about initially surviving the layoffs at G4 was incredibly tone deaf and proves she only cares about herself.

Michael Joseph Darcy

I went back and watched the rant in question and it certainly is weird but I agree with a lot of what she said. Online comment sections are a disaster and people say stupid sexist nonsense there all the time. It shouldn't be brushed under the rug, although that rant isn't the route I'd take either. I also don't think she's attacking their audience, It was about yt comments. G4 was going to fail with or without this outburst.

Ben!

Thank you.

Colin Moriarty

Great interview. Really enjoyed Peter. Would like to see him return.

Steve Bitto

Indeed. A lot of detachment from reality.

Colin Moriarty

I feel like if any of these people had ever worked a real job, they would know that even when your customer is an A-hole, even when it's obvious to everyone in sight, you can't talk to them this way... let alone start yelling at all your customers in the immediate vicinity.

In some sense, I do think the games media was a forerunner to the situation we find ourselves in, simply in the bleed-over from "Gamergate" and how that entered the mainstream consciousness.

Colin Moriarty

A really out-there concept, right?

Colin Moriarty

The games media was ahead of the rest for turning on it's audience wasn't it? I remember everything that blew up in 2014 and that wasn't even the start of it.

Mark Whittington

Who knew telling your audience to not watch could be a bad thing...

Hugo Stiglitz

Yeah, he sucks.

Colin Moriarty

Indeed.

Colin Moriarty

It's incredible. Money in the toilet.

Colin Moriarty

Maybe one day.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you.

Colin Moriarty

Right. Just ignore.

Colin Moriarty

I agree.

Colin Moriarty

I dunno. It's weird anyone would disrespect their own customers.

Colin Moriarty

2016 definitely broke everything.

Colin Moriarty

I agree. It's a vital piece of his reporting, so it needs to be corroborated.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you.

Colin Moriarty

I've thought about it. Maybe!

Colin Moriarty

Thanks. =)

Colin Moriarty

Thank you.

Colin Moriarty

Thanks for listening.

Colin Moriarty

I was rooting for G4, but when i tuned in, it wasn’t great content. I had no idea Sessler was so crazy online. I don’t follow ppl on social media due to so much politic crap from both directions.

Dana Anderson

What a timely episode. The announcement came. G4 is officially shutting down.

Michael Welter

Great episode, the main take away has to be the nepotism behind that executives son. Like what the hell was he thinking and how anyone got behind such a stupid idea is unbelievable. But the longer I work the more I see this type of behaviour.

Reuben Barrett

Great guest. Sure sounds like Peter would be a good candidate for a spoiler cast. I wonder if Comcast could sue Frosk for corporate sabotage. Probably not because everyone just went along with it.

Luke Silletta

Another banger of an episode. Love this content. Thanks Colin.

Phillip

lesson of the day is all these screeching clowns die in deafening silence. don't hate watch, don't engage in rage comments and they all go belly up begging you for attention with their last breath. It also allows you to spend more time on stuff that you actually like and gets more focus on creators whose personalities are not defined by their sexuality nor by a blend of mental disorders and ancestry.com DNA test results. Your attention is currency

Great episode! However, I think some of the assumptions/conclusions that Pete made about the video editing seem a bit misguided, and possibly imply some form of shoddy journalism. Like it was mentioned in the show, that’s a huge topic, and clarification on that point is necessary.

Korey Beaver

Great Episode. I wish Pete success. I always think part of the problem of the deconstructionist people who want to change the whole world to fit them, is that they also throw out all of our tried and true axiomatic truths. "Don't bite the hand that feeds." Could have saved a lot of jobs. But the fact that she went rogue is nuts to me. I'm with what Colin was supposing, someone must have helped her. But wow. Like you should never be servile and subservient to your audience, sure. But like Pete said, "Read the room." Oh another simple phrase with undeniable truth.

Nathan Densley

The 2016 election broke this country because liberals suddenly realized that this country's future isn't guaranteed and fascism is easily slipped into. The status quo state of liberals is the belief that history has a positive upward trend. Shoving it into their face that its not even close to guaranteed is going to be uncomfortable. Leftists have always known this and it's not a surprise to anyone that believes theory. It also radicalized much of the right in this country. Right wingers will never believe they lost an election ever again. Careening toward the cliff and the anxiety around that is going to sew division.

Ryan

Young men are also aggressive. So it's going to have an audience that reflects that. I also think there is a social isolation and resentment associated with this hobby. Combined with an "autism" (I wish I had a better term) I understand this hobby has the rep it does.

Ryan

Kind of strange that he didn’t confirm if the Frosk rant was filmed or broadcast live, as that makes a huge difference as who is to blame for its impact.

Rich Price

Good stuff

Clint

Gamers aren't toxic as a whole but we are a representation of society as well so just as we have extreme people who abuse online on politics, we have toxic people in the gaming sphere. Social media has combined them and amplified their voices.

Hozi

Hey Colin, I had an idea for SS + that went along with your dream for bringing the Beyond brand over... What about a monthly installment of + dedicated to PS3 era games, topics, stories from your time covering it. As always, enjoyed the show and all of your work!

Justin 24Hr

Amazing episode! Lesson here is that you should leave the activism out of the product, plain & simple

Remington James

Loved this conversation. The destructive nature of games media is so fascinating to me.

Will Hahn

Nice, as noon approached I was hoping today’s episode would be this discussion.
