Sacred Symbols+, Episode 239 | The PlayStation VR2 Gutcheckcast

For a surprisingly long time, PlayStation VR2 lingered at first as a rumor, then as an acknowledged but unannounced and unnamed device, then -- finally! -- we got to see what it actually is. And frankly, it looks awesome. But there's a problem. Multiple issues, actually. Where are the games? Seldom-seen. The price? Understandable, but tonedeaf in this economy. Availability? Through a lottery system that can't even guarantee you day-one shipping for a device you buy months ahead of time! To delve into our hopes and concerns for PSVR2, we welcomed Tom from Moore's Law is Dead and the Broken Silicon podcast (and our very own Tech Analyst) to go through everything we know, and wonder where all of this is going. Is Sony the victim of poor timing and horrible currency and borrowing rates? Or will PSVR (and Sony's virtual reality initiative as a whole) never leave its comfortable niche?

I'd probably trip and fall. =\

Colin Moriarty

The price is fine as a relative thing. It just needs way more games.

Colin Moriarty

I don't know.

Colin Moriarty

Yes.

Colin Moriarty

=\

Colin Moriarty

Well, that aside.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you.

Colin Moriarty

We need more game announcements. We shall see.

Colin Moriarty

Bye week blues, but feeling good.

Colin Moriarty

LOL. I think you'd be surprised how few gaming personalities know anything about taxes and money.

Colin Moriarty

You guys should wear cowboy boots on stage. We rarely if ever wear cowboy hats here in Houston. 😂😂

As soon as I saw that price I lost interest, if I was going to invest in a platform with a software selection so small, I wouldn’t invest in a walled garden that’s almost twice the price like the psvr2, especially with Sonys history of censorship! What if I want to play a bloody horror game? Vr chat? What if I’m feeling wild and wanna play a porn game? Can’t do that with psvr 2

Captain Bon Clay

Why mayta? He made me doubt myself so I went to the video of Zuckerberg announcing the name change and...yeah, he says mehta, not mayta.

James

Are you limpin with the bizkit?

lazer_josh

Just wait until you hear Tom say “forums”!

TheSissyOfFremont

You can’t go live like a king in Japan right now. The country is still closed to foreigners because of Covid.

May-Ta. Such a good conversation thanks guys

Psvr2 is good hardware but tied to closed garden psn store is a deal breaker. Needed either psvr back compt or native Steam VR support. Without either of those it can wither on the shelves and die, imo. Call of the Mountain, looks like novel vr experience, not a reason to buy vr like Half-Life Alyx was on Steam. Alex was a full on AAA release, that just happened to be in VR. Line up looks laughable bad so far. Personally rather wait to see what Pico and Meta (Quest 3) can offer in their newer headsets.

Dale

Colin! How about our jets😄

Mario Villelli

I wonder how many gaming personalities would even talk about this if they weren’t writing it off on their taxes. They need some must play titles before I even think about it. DOA if you ask me, and I’m not talking jiggly physics, although they’d need that too. 😄 Solid ep though.

NeO JD

Seems like it's gotta be a thing at Insomniac.

Colin Moriarty

Sony would never drop the price of it for poor sales, horrible optics. They could potentially get away with the move if inflation lessens and they get to a more optimistic profit margin.

Colin Moriarty

It's worth trying, if you're able. See if it's for you.

Colin Moriarty

Thanks for listening.

Colin Moriarty

It took a few seconds to work out who he was talking about!

Rich Price

Dustin said something about there not being anything appealing enough on vr2. Obviously that's from his perspective but as a big horizon fan I disagree. I feel like call of the mountain could have a lot of people excited.

Heezy

May-ta?

Have you considered considering considerations considerately considerate

Spiderman vr would be the best thing sony could do to bring this into the mainstream

Brandon Young

The first 2 things people will look at is the price & if it’s backwards compatible. I can see this being on sale almost immediately.

Brandon Soto

I’ve never tried VR but I really enjoy the discussions around it. Im sure I would like PSVR2 but for the most part I just want to sit down and play my videogames. I think if Sony plays it smart they will find their success like they did with their first VR system.

Mitchell Lundsberg

Great episode. Tom really hit the nail on the head when he said Sony could have a long term advantage via games but the meta you can use for a lot more then just games. That’s a hold off for me personally. I’m more interested in the quest 3 because I know I’ll be able to use steam and use it for other stuff as well.
