KnockBack, Episode 249 | The Dark Side of the Moon (Pink Floyd album) (Video)

1973's Pink Floyd record The Dark Side of the Moon is easily one of the most famous albums of all-time, toting what is perhaps the most recognizable cover art ever concocted. Its 10 tracks (or 9, if you're old-school) tell a deeply human tale, celebrating the ups and downs of life with some of the most vivid and emotional rock lyrics ever constructed, all within a progressive rock framework that sounds like it was written and recorded yesterday. Of course, it wasn't. It's a nearly 50 year old work of art, now. That's what makes it so special, and why we're so eager to gush about the wonderful work of Gilmour, Waters, Mason, and Wright. So hit play.

Thank you for listening.

Great episode. I had a similar experience with a college roommate who had the album poster on his wall and always found it captivating. Hard to pick favorites with so many great albums and songs to choose from but I really like the guitar in Fearless off of Meddle.

Mike Collins

Thanks for listening. =)

Colin Moriarty

The Wall means more to me personally, but this is a very important album. Can't wait to see what's next.

The actions of the military and their leadership, definitely, but not the people. On Israel he only speaks that he wants Israelis and Palestinians to live in harmony. As I said above though, speaking as a massive fan of his, I’ve found his language increasingly troubling over this past year, so I’ll let him represent himself going forward even if he’s becoming an r/pinkfloydcirclejerk version of himself. He will come across as he does lol /shrug

They're all really good. =)

Colin Moriarty

Yeah, I dig them a lot.

Colin Moriarty

Indeed.

Colin Moriarty

Such an awesome record. =)

Colin Moriarty

I would say he comes off as flagrantly anti-Israel.

It’s so hard for me to even determine my favorite album of there’s. I think Dark Side just purely musically is the most addictive and amazing, but Wish You We’re Here has all that plus a lot of emotions for me. And then Animals…the messaging. What a band!

I have this album on (amongst every other format!) a scratchy old TDK90 that my dad handed me when I was around 9/10 and it's been played to the point it sounds like it's under water! Also nice to hear Porcupine Tree briefly mentioned in the Prog discussion, in my top 3 all time bands and just last weekend I saw their reunion tour in London (9th time seeing them but first since 2009!), must-see live band if you haven't :)

Man I listened to this album when I was kid during heavy turbulence on a plane, wide awake after some sleep medication didn't work. Everyone else on the plane was fast asleep and I felt like I was tripping balls. Not many albums feel as complete as this one.

Reuben Barrett

Also, I have fun memories with my step brother of listening to this album with the wizard of oz to see if it lined up.

Alex Gould

One of the best albums of all time. I went through a phase sometime in 2004 or 05 during high school where I would fall asleep to this album every night. “Money” and “Time” have two of my favorite guitar solos ever.

Been waiting on this one for a long time! Thanks! For the record though, Waters isn’t anti-Israel. He’s against the mistreatment of the Palestinian people by Israel’s forces. His language on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is pretty alarming though. He’s been effectively blaming the west for the war and is soft on Putin. He’s not totally consistent with his anti-violence rhetoric i guess.
