Sacred Symbols+, Episode 242 | It Only Did Everything

Please welcome writer and entrepreneur Sandeep Rai back to +. As you may recall, Sandeep first came to our show nearly a year ago to talk about his awesome book Vita Means Life, which he successfully Kickstarted and launched without a hitch (and to great fanfare). Those of us who've read that book know it's the most thorough and thoughtful work yet compiled for PlayStation's second handheld, and now Sandeep is back with a treatment for our beloved PlayStation 3 (a book which yours truly will be writing in). I was thrilled to invite Sandeep back to our show to talk shop, and get the details on the approach and content of his new book, and what we might expect from a chronicle of the PlayStation brand's most tumultuous period, bar none. PS3 is special to a lot of us for a lot of different reasons. It's awesome that someone is endeavoring to give it the respect it deserves, from an era where PlayStation's very existence was on the line. Seems unthinkable today, but 15 years ago? As you'll learn, it was very much the reality.

Yes.

That's insane.

Colin Moriarty

Yes.

Colin Moriarty

Fat PS3 is one of the best consoles ever!

Wade Says

I still have never seen a PlayStation 3 in person. The fuck was i up those ten years? Probably either porn or aliens.

Michael

This guy makes awesome manuals for ps vita games too.

Taylor kazemba

Thanks for the support Caleb!

Colin Moriarty

PS3 was awesome.

Colin Moriarty

He's great!

Colin Moriarty

Awesome, thank you.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you for that.

Colin Moriarty

Indeed. =)

Colin Moriarty

I don't remember that. That's interesting.

Colin Moriarty

Thank you. <3

Colin Moriarty

Got a backer out of me 👍

MeatSpin11

Man I could gush about the PS3 for hours and hours. Even though we've gotten what are objectively better made games during the PS4 and PS5 generations, I'd say there was never a more FUN time to be a playstation fan than during the PS3 generation.

Sandeep.. what a lovely chap! Hardworking and knowledgeable and so enthusiastic. Great episode. Backed his project after this episode - wasn’t aware the kickstarter was live 😊

bc2089

Thanks for the support Anthony!

Sandeep Rai

It’s something that I thought was just me at first but a lot of people feel this way. It’s more of the same. Ragnarok is 2018 pumped up to 11 but 2018 still hits harder, especially narratively.

NeO JD

Awesome interview! And backed the Kickstarter because of it. Thanks for all the content.

Anthony Rented

Keep up the great work, looking forward to reading both 🙏🏽

Dimitreus Newell

Thanks for the support Dimitreus!

Sandeep Rai

This is hella cool, and I didn’t get the last book so I had to back both physical copies 👏🏽

I was checking PushSquare this morning, saw the article about the book, saw the mention of this episode, listened to the episode and heard Colin say he was reaching out to PushSquare. Full circle. Great episode and can’t wait to read the book!

I really hope he covers a piece of History I don't often see people bring up or remember. There was a day shortly after Heavy Rain came out on the PS3 when a lot of the fat PlayStation 3s had an internal clock error and bricked. Sony put out a statement saying that they were looking into what they could do to fix it but they never announced anything solid, what happened is radio silence until the next day when the clock turned over and all the fat PS3s were able to be played again. This was right around the time when the PS3 was finally picking up steam and it was a really scary moment, because it could have cost them a lot of money if it hadn't resolved itself.

Tonys_Always_Write

Interesting interview - thanks both! First day backer again for this. Sandeep produces excellent, legitimate work and am interested to see how the more collaborative approach works.

Michael Cook

Imagine being Bored with Ragnarok… I’m glad I waited to jump into Last of us part 1. GoWR isn’t “another one of these” in my eyes but to each their own.

AllTooEasy_

Thanks Mitchell! Yeah the Steam Deck is awesome. Being able to play proper AAA games on a handheld is very cool

Sandeep Rai

They did do the documentary a few years ago called From Bedrooms to Billions the PlayStation Story. It was kind of funny because they spent 90 minutes talking about the PS1 and PS2, 20 mins on the PS4 and 5 mins on the PS3!

Sandeep Rai

I bought a steam deck and love it. I believe sandeep recently bought a steam deck. Dustin has a steam deck. Red rover, red rover let colin come over? It’s a great successor to the vita. It’s time to grow a backbone, instead of buying one, and purchase a steam deck lol. Sandeep did a great job on the Vita book, I should buy this one as well.

Mitchell Lundsberg

Would love a PlayStation documentary in the vein of the Xbox one released last year, that was a great watch. Might take some humility that the current PlayStation brand doesn’t have, though.

Steve Forgione

Great memories.

Colin Moriarty

Thanks for taking the time. <3

Colin Moriarty

PS3 rules.

Colin Moriarty

Hahaha. Me too.

Colin Moriarty

Awesome. Thanks for supporting him.

Colin Moriarty

Got my copy. Cant wait

Have you considered considering considerations considerately considerate

PS3 was my first home console I paid for by myself. I didn't get it until 2012 because of financial issues. I picked it because everyone I knew had one. And when I got it I thought it was amazing playing the greatest hits of the generation for dirt cheap. It wasn't until I actually stopped and looked at my games and saw how many of them were exclusive that I took notice and realized I made the right decision getting a PS3 over any other console. And since then I've been a huge fan of Sony. But now I'm like the dude sitting on the bench and looking around outside meme waiting for them to tell me what's next with games

thefury4815

Ps3 is my all time favorite console. I have 4 of the back compat consoles at the moment, the CECHB01 launch model that was black instead of chrome for the trim is super amazing looking. I have 3 of those lol

Adam Thiry

Thanks so much for having me on Colin. It was great talking to you and I loved reminiscing about the PS3. :)

Sandeep Rai

Man thinking back to the PS3. What an amazing console. I remember back in 2007 my big bro bringing it home. I think the first game we popped in was GTA IV and took forever to install but it was glorious on our 20-in HDTV. What a time.
