Sacred Symbols+, Episode 252 | Colin Is Listening (Video)

Most people don't need to or want to flip their games. That's the reality, obviously.

Colin Moriarty

You are no doubt right. I guess what I'm saying is: Be careful what you ask for.

Colin Moriarty

He's amazing.

Why would anybody pay exorbitant PSN prices for games they'll only play through once, i.e. Ragnarok or HFW. You could pay £50 to buy a game from a retailer (vs £70 on PSN), get it delivered to your door, beat the game and then trade it in for £40. Compared to the scenario I've just outlined there, the economic arguments which Colin makes in the video in favour of buying digital games from PSN are the ones that are incoherent IMO.

Ste Simpson

I thought Dustin was tired of the tangent Colin was on lol

The whole "games are expensive to develop therefore we should expect to pay more" is flawed when most bigger games make thier money back in less than 1 week. Yes, some games will struggle but that's the market speaking, not every game is a banger or appealing to everyone. Not all movies make thier money back, not all bands chart on the top 100. How can Sony please the Oliver Twist "please sir, can I have more" charging $70 when thier ROI is 3 days. The whole argument doesn't make sense in a growing market where profit records are broken with (nearly) every big release.

Out of all the years I’ve been on YouTube, Summoning Salt is the best creator I’ve come across. It’s better than Christmas Eve every time he releases. I didn’t even like speed running but now it’s all I watch on YouTube

Colin I completely understand and I don't blame you at all. Thank you for the clarity.

It's wise for your brand, and for the perceived value of it, to hold onto cost as long as possible... whether or not it's good for the consumer is obviously totally different.

Colin Moriarty

It's worth it to me, too.

Colin Moriarty

That's some of that Dustin magic.

Colin Moriarty

Yes: I would invite people into my home to record each episode, and I would never do that today. And Fireside Chats really isn't viable unless it's done in person, since it largely deals with totally inexperienced podcasters (by design).

Colin Moriarty

Colin, what did you mean by Fireside Chats being unsafe to do? Can you elaborate on that?

Yiorgos

Wondering the same thing lol. I was so confused.

Mateusz Kuklinski

What the heck happened at 55:33 lol (audio version)

The extra 10$ or so in that digital game example is definitely worth it for me to be able to just download the game right away without leaving the house and to not have a case or disk I have to store in my apartment. The last game I bought on disk was Bloodborne at the midnight launch in 2014 ever since then I've been all digital with no regrets being able to predownload games and play them right when they release at 9pm is so nice and most games I buy full price anyways

Interesting debate re: game price drops over time here. On one hand I've always felt it hurts Ubi's business that they've essentially conditioned fans to wait for price drops, since they come about so quickly. But conversely I hate Nintendo's absolute unwillingness to make games more affordable with time. I've never once seen Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, which came out 9 years ago, selling for any less than $80 CAD. I'd like to play it, but I'm not paying that for a Wii U port. It's absurd! The advent of subscription services (Gamepass / PS+ Extra) is adding a new layer of complexity, where players are refraining from buying things on sale even, in anticipation of the game eventually becoming free. It's almost as though studios are competing more for a player's time than their money at this point.

A smiling Colin on the thumbnail is the Colin I want to see. Excited for this!
