Sacred Symbols+, Episode 253 | The Sacred League: December 2022

It's time once more for The Sacred League, our monthly game that pits Sacred Symbols' hosts against each other in nonsensical competition. As usual, we go down both subjective and objective routes, and this month's inquiries run the gamut from unremarkably normal to profoundly strange. Will Persona 4's early 2023 PS4 release score above or below a 90.5 on Metacritic? Which game best represents how 2022 felt? What studio do you believe audiences are way too hard on? Where would Phil Spencer and Jim Ryan go to dinner if they wanted to become friends? Will Elden Ring be the industry's consensus Game of the Year? What's Santa's favorite video game? All of that -- plus scoring last month's competition -- on the other side of play.

No one can know in development when outside timelines are converging.

Colin Moriarty

To each his own. The narrative potential of a game like Gone Home is immense.

Colin Moriarty

Maybe they'll edit the next show properly, who knows.

Colin Moriarty

LOL.

I actually thought the answer Colin would have for a studio that has been treated unfairly was Guerilla. I imagine it is in his Top 5, but as an outsider Horizon: FW was totally beaten up this year. And not much of it seemed to be merit based. I can’t remember a AAA game that got pummeled in that fashion. Playstation Studios was foolish to do another head to head, but hindsight is 20/20 as nobody anticipated Elden Ring to blow the doors off like it did. Although going up against a studio who’s last game was the game of the year wasn’t exactly bright.

Man, I was hearing praise all around youtube space about Gone Home so I tried it and played a bit I was like "nice atmosphere, let's see the gameplay" and after walking around a bit I was like "wait this is all, it is about [redacted] and you just search around?". I didn't like it at all, I don't like these "personal" stories it feels like someone's therapy session I like things to be more concrete and the story to affect the world at large or I might just be a bigotue but I never liked any "walking simulator" I've tried.

Fotis Lyto

Bahahahaha I said Applebee's at the same time Chris. Jim and Phil sharing a 2 for 20 sounds incredible.

lazer_josh

Was thinking the same thing, thought Colin was being rude but turns out it's an error that doesn't exist on the video format

Toiea

Yes

TheMuff1nMon

Anyone else get an audio glitch around 1 hour 26 minutes with Colin talking over Dustin? The timing of it is hilarious; it would make a great Lockmort edit. 😅

Abe Sampson

Because my review is better.

Colin Moriarty

I never bought it, got it for free on PS3. =D

Colin Moriarty

Skyrim definitely doesn't suck. The question is, has it held up?

Colin Moriarty

Neverending breadsticks.

Colin Moriarty

I don't think it's that serious.

Colin Moriarty

A steal.

Colin Moriarty

LOL!

Colin Moriarty

Great, thanks. =)

Colin Moriarty

I like Red Robin, used to go there with the PlayStation Blog guys.

Colin Moriarty

=)

How can't Colin understand the lower scores for Last of Us Part 1? It has been many years since the first release. Maybe the things that earned it a 10 back then just aren't as "special" to people today. Or maybe some of the negatives stand out a little more all these years later. That said, I thought the remake was incredible and easily gets a 10 (or close to it) from me. But it is still understandable why others wouldn't feel the same. Plus, you reviewed it at IGN originally, and someone else reviewed this time. So why would you just expect the same score?

I owned Skyrim when it first came out for Xbox. It was okay. I put a decent amount of hours into it, but never finished it. Then when I upgraded my PC, I bought it again...because surely Mods would make it into a great game. Again, I lost interest before finishing it. Then, I bought it to play on PSVR. That time I only got about an hour into before I realized I just never liked the game. It is ugly, has a boring story, and terrible combat. Take my experience with a grain of salt, though....as I never like Ocarina of Time either.

Ryan Zimm

I can't speak to the true majority opinion on Skyrim, I did buy it once for $20, but I've never really liked BGS games too much including it. Fallout 3 was enjoyable in ways, but I prefer the old CRPGs to their version. Regardless, I look forward to seeing if I feel differently about Starfield.

TL

Chris' argument that ppl complain about Skyrim but still buy it... well.. I've bought Skyrim twice and never played more than 5 hours... they were weak moment, fomo, sale purchases over 10 the years since its release... don't get me wrong, I take responsibility and think about this every time I might be fomo buying a game but... I do complain that Skyrim is bad so invalid argument, Chris. Skyrim sucks

Drewbuntu

They have a certain tone that is used whenever criticism of Elden Ring is brought up. To me the tone seems whiny, that’s all. And their praise for Elden Ring also often has criticism of/shots at different games intermixed in the arguments, which is odd to me. I mean Colin has his moments too, we all do. Btw I never said Colin was correct or incorrect, I only mentioned the way both responded in what seemed to be in a very defensive posture...maybe it was an audio editing quirk

Zack E

Come on, it's not like they aggressively went after him and told him "git gud" or "you just don't understand", which are more the hallmarks of the worst of that community. He made a comment about how that game was actually more repetitive in its activities than other open world titles, they offered a pretty tame response, and then...they all moved on. I get that Souls fans can be grating to no end, but in this instance, it's nothing more than two people cordially responding to what they viewed as a misrepresentation. It's not the fault of the hosts that it happens to be about a game that is saddled with a contentious community, but their correction about the game does not make them part of that lot by default.

Salazarmageddon

Send the suits to the Olive Garden. They could use a lesson in Italian generosity. Ooooohh let's eat and make a deal 🤌

SaltyTrees

There are valid complaints about Elden Ring, but Colin attempts to talk about a game he barely scratched the surface in. Calling out a lack of npc chatter and calling the world more static than a checkbox open world game doesnt really make sense. Only makes sense if you didn't get past the first legacy dungeon or start a single NPC quest. I think Dustin's push back was very valid.

Josh Daniel

Can Colin provide an observation about Elden Ring without being literally immediately told that it’s invalid.....? I worry that the stereotypical obnoxiousness of Souls fans that has incubated during the past decade or so is starting to entrap both Dustin and Chris. Pretty defensive when something that doesn’t fall in line with FromSoft groupthink comes forward in discussions....

Zack E

Looks like Horizon is currently 50% off digitally

Tonys_Always_Write

Loving the non-linear Christopher Nolan coverage of Ancient Apocalypse lol

Reon Williams

Yup! I love going to Chilis lol. Love their salsa. ... And their chicken 'n waffle dippers? 🤤🤤🤤

Bambi_Cobblestone

Colin I forgot what podcast it was but you mentioned, even if you have no interest in the sacred league (which I don’t) you still hope the podcast is worth listening to because of the sacred boys reasoning for why they picked the games they do. I can confirm that is exactly why I listen! Merry Christmas and happy holidays everyone!

OCEL0T

The respect given to Chilli’s in this episode makes me so happy. It is by far the best restaurant of its kind.

Dakota Brown

Wow no Red Robin huh? Very disappointing that y’all didn’t think of bottomless steak fries and a Royal Red Robin burger as catalyst for a burgeoning friendship.

Drew Sleezer

“I have nothing better to do with my life.” *Colin’s shelf in the background - “Am I a joke to you?”

Brandon Soto

Take it easy… it’s coming! We have another week of content coming. :) -Dustin

Dustin Furman

Might as well give up on getting that top 10 first party ranking
