Sacred Symbols, Episode 237 | Fading Ubiquity

Not too long ago, Ubisoft was one of the most powerful publishing entities in all of video games. Today, it's a beleaguered entity haunted by an absurdly high headcount and a development pipeline ill-suited for modern trends. The result has been an in-progress collapse notable enough to warrant an extensive update from the company itself, alongside a flurry of cancelled projects and ominous adjusted financial expectations in a worsening economy. The long and the short is: Ubisoft has big changes coming, and we're eager to talk about all that's gone wrong, and what may go right in the future. Other news includes rumors of a second party People Can Fly-developed shooter for PS5, the faux story about vertical PS5s breaking, and the embarrassing Limited Run Games fiasco, plus more. We then end this week not as we traditionally do -- with six questions from the audience -- but rather with our Game of the Year awards, the most prestigious and important you can possibly imagine. We also focus-in on a listener who wrote in about his teeth-brushing habits, and... well... we'll leave it for the show.

The eating food while walking bit got me because I never understand those people either even though I’m a New Yorker. lol

NeO JD

So, I am a bit behind and am catching up on my listening But! I felt I had to comment We can't say niche like the French, but we ought to say Enix like the Japanese?? The 'e' sound in Japanese is like the one found in the word 'egg' in English and is the only 'e' sound they have. I'm sure this is why you were "corrected" If it's fine to anglify 'niche' then it is fine to anglify Enix, surely Right?

Ian Everett Trout

It’s a good service that saves money!

OCEL0T

Who cares? My Game of the Year in 2021 was on Gamepass. LOL.

Colin Moriarty

Very diverse.

Colin Moriarty

Say that to the person who got fired.

Colin Moriarty

Seems like a lot of folks are really digging it.

Colin Moriarty

Funny how 4 of their favorite games of the year are on game pass, fuckin whoops

OCEL0T

I would like to nominate Horizon: Forbidden West for the “Oh Brother, Where Art Thou” award, for having the largest amount of non-white people, possibly ever.

Greg Hommel

When it comes to the LPG segment, Chris nails it: go outside, live you’re life, get off your devices—this is how we change the world, rather than spitting vitriol on the internet.

Kid-Organic

Puss in the Boots Last wish is a fantastic film. Finally a modern animated film that will give children night terrors again. And it scares adults too with themes of anxiety and mortality.

NinjaDC

It's a ghost.

Colin Moriarty

Jesus.

Colin Moriarty

Shoutout.

Colin Moriarty

Ha! Thanks.

Colin Moriarty

Perhaps so. They are desperate for a live service game, after all...

Colin Moriarty

Shoutout to Yuji.

Colin Moriarty

No word of a lie, swear it on my mothers honour. I was listening to the segment about listening to podcasts at 1.5x - 2x speed (which i would NEVER intentionally do), and the patreon app automatically switched me to 2x. This happens all the time with the junkie patreon app, but it was unCANNY how perfectly timed it was. For a moment, i thought the show was intentionally edited this way 🤣

Malcolm G

1.75x speed enjoyer here!

Shout out to Hammurabi's code.

Kevin Cooper

Great episode you guys! Colin, to be an anecdote in your worldview theory...I am only subscribed to two Patreons: Last Stand and Chapo Trap House (lol)

Josh Tarpley

You guys always say in games you need to be ahead of the trend. You can't mimic what's popular now because things may drastically change in 5 years when your game finally comes out. Is it possible Ubisoft is constantly changing Skull and Bones to fit what's 'in' right now, and its backfiring at every angle causing constant delays?

The Baffling Cultural Significance of SpongeBob

I'd like to give out my own worthless, non-fungible awards. The first is the "Why would you say that" award which goes to Unity CEO John Riccitiello for calling his customers "some of the biggest fucking idiots". Having read the full statement, I get what he's trying to say but maybe think twice before you speak. Ask Jim Ryan he's learned that lesson. The second is the "Didn't go fast" award which goes to none other than Yuji Naka who's been on a streak of L's with the failure of Balan Wonderworld and being arrested not once, but twice. His prodigal son Sonic the Hedgehog finally got a 'good' game out last year with Sonic Frontiers. Coincidence? Maybe.

Sam Lee

I laughed at the same time as the guys during the linguistic lesson. Gotta go see that on the video version.

SaltyTrees

Twisted Metal may not be on PS+ because of licensed music. That's the only logical reason I can think of for why they're absent

Michael (ObjoGaming)

My wife and I got married basically in the fashion that Chris explained. We went to the courthouse and did the formal ceremony and then just went out to dinner with her family and my brother who was visiting us that week. Then the following summer we had the big reception lol. The ideal way to do it, IMO.

Josh Gamez

I used to spend between 200 to 300 bucks on limited run games every year. They wont get another penny from me. I'm sure this decision will hurt them and I'm happy it will.

Luke Silletta

Colin, you shouldn’t pay for the wedding. Her parents should pay.
