KnockBack, Episode 253 | Star Wars: A New Hope

Over the five years we've been recording KnockBack, we've intentionally gone out of our way not to talk about A New Hope. It's an especially peculiar decision, considering the first-ever episode of KnockBack is about The Empire Strikes Back, the film that would follow it. But we wanted to get 2023 into gear with something positive and fun, a topic we can bring a lot of energy to, and we've finally succumbed: It's time to chat about 1977's original Star Wars film. But we do things a little differently, because this is probably the most-worn-out property to focus on, especially at this point. So instead of talking about the story, the main characters, and more, we discuss all we love in the negative space: The Jawas and the Sandcrawler, Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru, the Imperial officers and that dope meeting room, TIE Fighter Pilots and Death Star Gunners, and on and on and on. Some may call us nothing more than mindless philosophers, but we think this is perfect fodder for a show like ours.

Say what you will about George Lucas but a lot of people were involved in the creation of Star Wars and it says a lot that Empire (Arguably the best one) wasn't directed by him. In my opinion the problems didn't occur until he was given most of the control

Just a reminder Colin, the druids had their memory wiped at the end of episode 3. They would have started fresh in the service of Bail Organa from then on. Cheers for the episode.

Hey Colin, check out star wars Despecialized trilogy online. The steps online will allow you to download the orginal trilogy without any of the crappy special effects. Not sure why they dont just release these versions on disney plus but whatever. Thanks for all the great shows.

If you like star wars you should really get into dune. It's even better and the world is unbelievably cohesive. And it's interesting to see it's lasting inprints all over pop culture

Ryan

I could imagine that.

Colin Moriarty

Norm Abram sends his regards.

Paul Waltz

Hey colin. Tatooine was inspired by dune. Gl lifted lots of stuff from dune

Ryan

Old PBS standby.

Just here for Colin name dropping Rick Steves. Wtf is up, Europe. Rick Steves owns you, per the apostrophe in the show title.

Paul Waltz

Holy shit!!!! MASK. I haven't thought about those toys and cartoon for ages. Omg my childhood flashed in front of my eyes. The green motorcycle, red camaro, black bronco and the mountain. Wow going to have to look them up

Doug Hogancamp

If you are interested in what Jawas and tuskens are keep reading Tatooine used to be a water world that was bombed into a desert world and so many of the creatures from that world have adapted to living in the desert, jawas and tuskens included so to answer your question they used to be fish people but that was thousands of years ago, as for what they look like now? No idea

Regarding the bit about Leia at the end: I kinda feel like sci-fi in general (and maybe calling Star Wars sci-fi is a bit of a stretch lol) was decades ahead of the curve when it came to strong female leads. The genre really deserves a ton of credit for that across all forms of media, IMO.

The first and biggest mistake of the prequels was to contradict what was said in the original trilogy. They made Obi-Wan a liar, lying about everything that happened in the past. I would love if someone asked George Lucas why he did that. Agree, a lot of people could make a better story treatment.

Morten Madsen

The force will be with you... Always

How we never got that opening scene with Luke and Biggs in any release is a terrible decision. I get that it's hard to insert that scene chronologically, but it would add weight to the two being reunited and Biggs' death.

Great episode. Long live Knockback.

Uncle Owen about to beat the shit out of a Jawa has made me laugh more than anything this whole day. Thank you ❤️

Richard Darling

Well I’ll be damned.

Andrew Morgan

It totally illustrates how Lucas’ success was largely due to every uber talented person underneath him.

Noah Friscopp

I'm pretty sure Dagan has already seen it, but if anyone missed "Light and Magic" on Disney + check it out. It's an incredible documentary about Industrial Light and Magic from director/writer Laurence Kasdan. It has so much archive footage from behind the scenes that have never been seen til now. It is a must watch for not just all Star Wars fans, but creative people in general.

LongJohnSivers#1Fan

Before I even begin thank you for making this episode about the "secondary" stuff.

Avery Illies

Ohhhh shit! Hell yeah. Always love hearing you guys talk about Star Wars… I was hoping to see this topic come around soon after knockback being revamped. Well, here it is :)

Will Hahn

Holy shit! Never thought I’d see the day.

Noah Friscopp

Long overdue! Star Wars Knockbacks are the best

Joe B

Man I love KnockBack
