This week, the Brothers Moriarty are joined by Last Stand's duo of producers, Dustin Furman and Ben Smith. Dustin tells us the tale of how he fell in love with his wife, and wonders how and when we knew we knew we loved our significant others. Ben asks about so-called 'kid money', or the cash young people earn and spend. How did we raise funds as children and teens, and how do we feel about the ever-growing economic power of kids? Dagan's topic is nitty and gritty: Pizza! Geographic specificity, topping choices, snootiness. The whole deal. And finally, Colin wants to talk about war, and an American society that seems to find itself militarily-engaged once a generation as if history never happened at all. Should we fear the repercussions of prolonging, escalating, and facilitating a conflict that has nothing to do with us?

I firmly believe that NY Pizza is absolutely the best, I'd never argue that. HOWEVER....Dustin is dead wrong(!) and pineapple and bacon pizza is the fucking TRUTH! I only get it sometimes, but it's so delicious...especially with a nice thin crust. 👌

Fast forward 8 years and we've been married just shy of 4 years and we celebrate both our wedding anniversary AND our Pizzaversary (Apr 27th and Oct 1st) every year. We were cheeseballs and even had Little Caesars at our wedding reception because of that, so that everyone could share in a little of that history. Note: we do NOT get Little Caesars for our anniversary though, we prefer real pizza whenever possible haha.

But in all honesty the UK and USA just seem to makes things worse all the time, and I don't know about the US so much but the UK is not the place to be right now, the health care is diabolical, wages are insulting, the cost of living has risen to a point where a lot of families can't even heat their homes, our political figures are just embarrassing and a joke to the rest of the world, our morals as a country are in the pits. We have become a godless, weak, pathetic country. So who are we to stick out noses in around the world. We can't even look after ourselves.

Not everything that happens, even in Europe, is through the lens of history, and if we as Americans need to learn anything about European war, it's that it never fucking ends, and it has nothing to do with us.

2023-02-11 20:25:24 +0000 UTCOn the point about compromise I would be interested to know if giving up any parts of Alaska would be acceptable compromise in order to have a peaceful relationship with Russia or to settle grievances they have about lost lands. Or if there ever was another border dispute between America and Mexico, would giving up some land to Mexico be an acceptable compromise to make to avoid a war or settle the dispute so you can go back to being peaceful neighbours.

2023-02-11 15:13:03 +0000 UTCMy go to pizza is a Pan pizza with Pepperoni, sausage, chicken, spinach, banana peppers, red peppers, jalapeños, oregano, and sea salt and pepper on top. If given the option, I want as many kinds of cheese as is available, and yes, I’m from California. In terms of the Ukrainian war, I feel very strongly about doing what we can to aid Ukraine because we won’t send in our troops. I took this stance when I found out that Russian soldiers raped women and children (both male and female) and mothers, while ignoring one child in the houses they committed these crimes in. When finished, would kill all members of said household, and told the ignored child that they were too ugly to be raped. We kept you alive to tell the rest of your people. Additionally, when Ukraine took back cities that were taken by Russia, the Ukrainian citizens were tied up, and executed by a bullet to the back of the head. The Russian soldiers would then tell someone in a household that was left alone that they had one hour to burry the bodies. If they were not back in their homes after an hour, they too would be killed by sniper. Often times, that hour marker was never reached. Finally, Russia has bombed civilian sectors, schools, and hospitals. They have essentially violated all rules of engagement we have come to know. Sure, the people being sent now aren’t exactly willing, but they are following orders. We had a símil sentiment with nazis and still held them accountable for their actions. I don’t know if you would have a good cases for a one to one comparison between Nazis and the Russian army, but I find it very difficult not to make that comparison. Should we be involved in this conflict? No, probably not. However, Russia shouldn’t have invaded, and they shouldn’t have committed the atrocities they have committed.

There always needs to be a voice to keep the war hawks in check. Like that one congresswoman who voted against war with Japan. That said, it is also important to note the cost of too much aversion to war. Bad actors are like infections, they need to be dealt with before they fester. The reason WW2 became so bad in Europe was because France and UK were so terrified to start another war with Germany that they bent over backwards to avoid it. Hitler's Germany was completely unprepared to fight of the western powers when he moved troops into the Rhineland. Dealing with Hitler in 1936 would have possibly cost hundreds of thousands of lives, but would have saved tens of millions. Putin goal is rather obvious, re-establish the USSR but minus Communism. Giving aid to Ukraine hinders those ambitions. Is that worth the risk? That is the debate. A debate that needs both hawks and doves at the table. Edit: I didn't mean to spend more time arguing for war than against, but war is harder to justify than peace.

2023-02-09 22:51:58 +0000 UTCOn the Ukraine Topic, I’d like to think everyone is anti war, (except Putin ostensibly). I don’t think there’s any real clamouring by those who are the actual decision makers for American troops to be involved - if there are people suggesting that, I think they’re very mislead, Zelensky has even said that the Ukrainian army need the weapons, and not man power necessarily. One thing I will have to disagree on is this notion that the Ukraine conflict in particular has nothing to do with the US. Under the Budapest Memorandum signed in 1994, the US, UK and Russia all agreed to respect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine in exchange for their surrender of nuclear arms. Of course one of those three didn’t respect them and maybe never has - so I feel like the US and UK may have a higher moral duty in this instance compared to other nations or conflicts, and I think UK has certainly played its part, America too. Ideally of course this would all be done peacefully, but it seems the Russian state (admittedly under a madman) is pushing it into a hotter and hotter conflict, people have spoken about potential peace deals previously, but some of the brokers of those deals (e.g. former Israeli PMs etc) have gone on record saying they don’t even think it would’ve lasted, and Russia has just repeatedly shown it doesn’t respect any sort of international law or order. It’s a tricky situation, but I think it differs from Iraq, the Ukrainian people are fighting valiantly for their freedom, and it’s very clear that they want this outside assistance, unlike the murkier vaguer Iraq and Afghanistan situations, not to say this isn’t also complex, but I think it’s in a different league. I appreciate what you said about the geopolitical game, so I won’t speak much about the benefits this could bring for America in terms of destabilising Russia, it is true that they’re a shadow of the Soviet Union and even former Russian incarnations, but that’s not to say they still haven’t acted in bad faith internationally, and I think turning a total blind eye could be a mistake. I will say though in all fairness - while I do appreciate America’s support of Ukraine, and the UK, I feel as a European (I’m Irish) that the EU as a whole should probably accelerate plans for some sort of common European defence, whether it’s militarily or in Ireland’s case, medical and humanitarian. Russia is certainly a more pressing threat for us across the pond compared to the US, and I personally fully support Ukraine’s accelerated entry into the EU. I could talk on this topic for hours, but I don’t want to inflame any tensions or cause any strife, I’m also aware that as a non-American it’s probably rich for me to pontificate on what the US should do or how NATO should work coming from a nation that’s not even a member. I just wanted to try and provide another layer to the discussion from another perspective, the ideal end is peace, but I don’t think Ukraine should have to sacrifice anything because of that - if Ukraine wants to join NATO or especially the EU, they should be free to do that, just as any other nation would be, and I hate to think Russia can hold them to ransom. My feelings on this are quite complex as you can tell by my diatribe which if you’ve read this far I appreciate - on the one hand I think the US is right to provide any aid it can to Ukraine, but I can understand the fatigue you’re feeling - we’re really in quite the conundrum! I think I’ve meandered long enough, I won’t take up anymore of your time and I don’t know if I’ve got any major thesis here, I just wanted to get my thoughts out there!

I think that it's a noble thing to want to help Ukraine defend itself, since its people want to resist, but the conflict is being drawn out and resulting in more deaths. The longer the conflict rages on, the higher the spillover risk. If we had applied more diplomatic pressure to both Russia *and* Ukraine at the beginning of last year, many more people would still be alive. Nevertheless, a quicker conflict means fewer deaths and less spillover risk, regardless of who wins. Yes, the particular circumstances that may result in for Ukraine would be less than desirable for them, but that region has been dealing with turmoil for some time. Hardly anyone in the West understands that.

You guys are awesome and I am sure your significant others are as well. I grew up in Williamsburg Brooklyn until I was 16 and the pizza there is phenomenal. I live in Allentown PA now and the pizza here is ass. I just finally found a good pizza joint recently and It only took 20 years 😂

I was met with a big "Noooo" he then explained to me how they are totally different places. I found this intriguing as I live on the outskirts of the SF Bay Area in a city called Brentwood. Now I'm not perfect about it (I've always had a very self deprecating sense of humor which drives my wife up the wall sometimes lol) but I've found that's helped me be able to love my wife even more.

We were able to spend a day exploring Odessa on our own and I found the people to be incredibly friendly. It is sad what has happened over there.

It was miserable because of the sweltering heat and wearing a sweater and leather jacket. Between bits of filming they would raffle off prizes for the people in attendance as extras. Fast forward to the end of the day. I was in the bleachers far behind the person announcing the winning numbers for the various give aways. I was sitting near a mother and her daughter who asked me if I would like their raffle tickets since they were sick of being there and decided to leave. I took them but had faith that of winning anything...but about ten minutes later they announced the winning ticket to have a small speaking roll in the film. To my surprise... one of those tickets was the winning number. I screamed as loud as I could when they asked if anyone had the winning ticket. I was so far behind the person announcing that they never heard me. People sitting around me also tried to get attention..so I started running down to down the stairs only for them to give up and start reading off another number before I had a chance to get close enough for them to hear me.

The reason for the deduction according to him was because of tax and it's something I had to get used to. Felt harsh then but it set me up to be good with money.
