Defining Duke Ultimate, Episode 105 | A Superhero Sized Problem

Note: This was recorded before the recent Suicide Squad footage from State of Play.

Between Midnight Suns and Guardians Of The Galaxy's respective underperformances, it appears that the Marvel brand isn't holding the strength universally that they'd hope for. With Spider-Man on PS4 storming past 33 million sales as of June 2022, you can't blame them for trying. With such underperformances in tow, one may ask if Marvel is now oversaturated and, in turn, leading to underperformances across the board. Meanwhile on the opposite end, DC is gearing up for an ambitious plan that ties their video games  stories into the ongoing movie plotline along with having those actors/actresses reprise their roles across all media. While both sides continue to toil away, Matty and Cog put on their capes and attempt to wrangle what is a daring time for a genre of games that used to only put out lackluster tiles.

Never been a fan of Marvel, and I've been disappointed how it's gone from overwhelming amounts of TV and film content to games, pulling resources away from talented studios. I'm glad it's not a instant recipe for success.

Man She-hulk was horrible, extremely unfunny with insane plot holes and a story that made no sense. I raise a eyebrow if someone says that it was solid. But on the other hand Matty said that Multiverse of madness is a top 5 marvel, which it is true if you go from worse to best.

Fotis Lyto

Love you Matty, but you messed up Viola Davis' name AND David Duchovny's a while back. It hurts, especially Mulder's name being butchered. But we understand... All joking aside, always great listening to you two!

Same, She-Hulk doesn’t deserve the hate it gets. I don’t agree Multiverse of Madness is top 5 MCU either though so everybody has their opinions I guess. I think comic book properties are always going to be hard to sell to the masses no matter what when it comes to games unless it’s the top tier Spidey or Batman. Movie market and Game market are so different.

I agree, I really enjoyed She-Hulk, growing up on the 90s Marvel cartoons she was one of the first I was exposed to and I dabbled in Slott’s run back in the day, it was a close adaption, it might not be for everyone but I think calling it “awful” is extreme. Sorry you didn’t like Midnight Suns, I was never a fan of the genre until I tried Mario Rabbids which was the gateway I needed to it I think.

Good episode as always Dukes! 💜

Gotta disagree with Matty on She-Hulk, it was solid. Plus, they brought back Daredevil. I’m with Cog on the point of Gunn has earned the shot to try out his approach. I’d rather it be 2 separate universes as Matty suggested, but let’s see if he can pull it off. As for Midnight Suns, I bought it on the back of the praise from Cog and others, but I quickly put it down because I didn’t connect with the gameplay.

Glad to see I’m not alone in the fatigue. I’m not a DC guy but Suicide Squad has my attention. I adored Guardians of the Galaxy though and the video game Peter Quill is more Starlord to me than Chris Pratt’s version now

DeathByClams

Why is the mythbuster's guy in the thumbnail?
