Would your friend be available? Maybe you'll leave a message... It was a weird tradition we repeated ad nauseam, one of many peculiar and lost customs we were subjected to in our analog childhoods. And it's those traditions that are the subject of this episode of KnockBack. Wild rumors and speculation on the playground? The internet solves that for today's youth, but in our day, we believed it all. Wanted to know if you had a snow day? You had to start watching the local news the night before and into the next morning, hoping to see your school district appear in the scrolling marquee. New year teacher assignments and quarterly grades? Sent through the old-fashioned mail, easy to intercept or lose. Waiting was a rite of passage for all schoolkids. Now, youngins can know anything at any time, about everything in the world. The mystery is gone, yes, but we hope this show rekindles it for a moment.

Regarding the house phone stuff: a house me and my wife looked at earlier this week (that we've since put an offer on so hoping for good news soon) had not only a house phone but also a VCR and a 1980s style analog stereo in the living room. It was a blast from the past. It was honestly super cool. And in hindsight I can't help but wonder if the nostalgia it gave us made us love the house even more lol.

I remember my mother sitting down with me and giving me a little book that I had to write in whenever I spent any money whatsoever. Spend a nickel?...it goes in the book. I had to write down every penny and what it was for, she was making sure that I understood there was never a reason for any surprises for anything directly in my own control. That stuck with me and I remember once when I made a mistake and spent too much money so that I had only barely enough to get to work and eat some ramen for a few days. As a 25 year old man I went out unprompted and got a little notebook and made myself be accountable again for every single penny. I was so disappointed in myself when I checked my account and found that. It never happened again, ever. I'm so extremely thankful that she taught me that lesson and that stuff stuck with me. 43 years old now and very well versed in budgeting, enough so that I teach a lot of people (who ask) how to make and stick to budgets, how to build and maintain their credit scores, etc etc. Our niece last week just went out shopping with Rei and at 9 years old she had a nicely written list, she'd checked prices online before going, and had budgeted out her fun little spending trip to Walmart haha. We didn't even have to tell her to do that, it was such an extremely proud moment for Rei and I.

I will say Colin even though I mostly agree with you. my dad sends me voicemails from time to time when he knows I’m at work or something after a long week or a rough day and he leaves Voicemails just reminding me that he’s proud of me etc. he also writes letters but I do treasure his voicemails, BUT anyone else… I ignore their voicemails too. Lol
