Constellation, Episode 20 | Dream Jobs, Concerts, Listening to Music, Advertising

Welcome back to Constellation! This time around, the Brothers Moriarty welcome executive producer Dustin Furman and Punching Up co-host Gene Park. Gene waxes poetic about his concert-going experiences, and inquires about which live acts are best (and worst). Dustin keeps the music theme going with a deep-dive into our listening habits over the years, with a particular eye paid to the format we were using, whether tape, CD, MP3, or something else entirely. Dagan wants to know where our heads are at with advertising. Do we ever fall prey? What's some of our favorite advertising ever? Is the old-school era of advertising truly over? Finally, Colin gets into dream jobs, the employment we'd seek if we had complete control over our lives in every facet. Sure, our gigs now are awesome, but they can be even better...

One thing I find funny about advertisements is some commercials are so funny you forget what is being sold to you. One my best friend & I bring up all the time was a scene at a dinner & waitress brings a plate with a burger. Guy says, "I said no mayo" & waitress grabs the top bun & scrapes the mayo off with the table edge.

We get a ton of pharmaceutical ads in EU, in fact they make the majority of tv and radio ads.

Dustin, Thrice is on tour with a band called Holy Fawn, I urge you to check them out, quite a unique and incredible band.

Timothy B Horvath

I feel like if you got Colin and Gene in the same room, Colin might just laugh himself to death.

Loved the conversation about dream jobs. The way I've always thought about it is "your job should, at absolute minimum, allow you to enjoy your life in some way." For some people that comes through the job itself, but I think for a lot of people it's more about the idea of having enough time/money to do what you really like. My dad, for example, loves aviation, but quickly realized he didn't want to be a pilot (shitty hours, time away from family, etc), so he pursued a career as an ER physician (which he likes well enough) to ensure enough financial stability and time off to be a private pilot in his spare time. THAT's the true dream for a lot of people, I think—have a job that you don't mind + do what you love outside of work so it doesn't feel like a job = an enjoyable experience overall.

One of my favorite things about Iron Maiden is that all the guitarist play Strats. I love a Stratocaster, but you just don’t see it in metal from that generation. It’s awesome.

Drew Lee

Woah Dustin sweet Dustin, stand DOWN! The Zune was fantastic and many of us miss it's greatness. 🥲

Lou & Rei Loper

Some of the best live acts are often musicians not known by the masses. Widespread panic, tedeschi trucks band, billy strings, govt mule, etc. I suppose it also depends on what you want. Some people really enjoy the “act” part with mega productions and theatrics like Taylor Swift etc. but going by just raw live music...some of the bands I listed are must see imo.

Dudley

Wow! That's pretty fascinating to me, I knew people like you HAD to exist but I never met one. Before podcasts, what did you listen to if anything?

Shoutout to Relient K and Yellowcard

Dylan Paulson

Col, why wouldn’t someone ask you for advice? You’re level-headed and successful. “Uncle Gene…yes.” 😄 Gene with that 3-6-Mafia story. Adding more and more to his legendary book of tales.

NeO JD

Great listen, thank you

Jason Hjartarson

Definitely recommend seeing Kendrick Lamar if you can Dustin. The Big Steppers was the most well-produced and choreographed concert I’ve seen.

Anthony Palerino

Hearing Dustin talk about Cornerstone really resonates with me. When people hear “Christian band” it’s usually met with negativity. But Underoath fucking rocks. Also a huge Relient K fan still to this day. Dustin, I also was playing shows starting in 8th grade in shitty post-hardcore bands. I feel like we’re kindred spirits. Always great to hear you talk about music.

yosh_wah

I absolutely recommend seeing Korn live in concert. I’ve seen them twice, once with Breaking Benjamin as well…they absolutely kill it! They sound just as good in person as on record, with such good energy!

Derek Williams

I really like this podcast, but it would be nice if it had timestamps in the description. Then we could skip (not me) or listen to a topic again later. Please consider it :) (This episode: 8:40, 1:02:00, 1:40:20, 2:38:50)

Morten Madsen

Am I the only one astonished at how Dustin pronounces Velcro? Val-kur-oh is just wild.

Cody Raburn (ray-burn)

I am a person that does not like music. I have never listened to music in my free time, and it always makes me feel dead and broken. I wish I could love it. 😔

Zackery Parkerson

I love when you guys talk music. Was listening to an old knockback about 6 months ago and Colin was talking about Ben Folds Five and I fell in love with them so thanks for that. Also, Head is the guy from Korn who left after finding god but he came back. Munky is the other guy. Lastly, shout out to the song box set by barenaked ladies. Stay salty, Fellas!

Eric the human

The fact Colin is watching the walking dead makes me happy. The first 6 seasons deserve more credit. 9 and 10 are good too but it never lives up to the early days of the show.

Xavier Gomez

Top 5 best bands I’ve seen Circa Survive was my first concert in 2012, Saves the day when Chris Conley played for 2 1/2 hours straight and fought someone in the crowd, Muse at the Wells Fargo, Coheed at the Starland Ballroom and Mewithoutyou is incredible live. The wife and I are seeing Blink 182 and Turnstile on Saturday in Hershey. That should be fun.

Michael Mashpotato

Yo the fact that Gene has seen At The Drive In is gnarly as fuck. Wonder what his opinion on The Blood Brothers is.

Zack

I work outdoors for 8+ hours a day in the Alabama heat and can attest to the quality of Liquid IV. Way better than Gatorade.

Colton George

I love to watch… where is the video?

Michael Mendoza

“Dude…. You’re getting a Dell” was the best ad. Before we smoked blunts we would say “Dude, we’re getting an L” 😅

Michael Mashpotato

Jeff Gerstmann’s ED pill ads are legendary and can’t be topped, but I find gaming shows shilling for games or marketplaces super gross and basically guarantee I don’t directly give them money.

Noah Friscopp

🕷️(no I selected the wrong layer.)

Dustin Furman

Do you guys just keep reusing the spider pick to prevent arachnophobes from listening from listening/watching? 😂

Bambi_Cobblestone

Haha first.
