Sacred Symbols, Episode 258 | I Feel Summer Creepin' In

The PlayStation Showcase left many fans disenchanted, but can Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest deliver some positive energy? It turns out that yes, it certainly can. Spider-Man 2 now has a release date, Prince of Persia, Sonic, and Like A Dragon are all getting new entries, known titles like Mortal Kombat 1, Witchfire, Remnant 2, Lies of P, and Banishers all look great, and new IP were revealed and elaborated on, too, like Toxic Commando and Sandland. Let's catch up on all of that, plus much more from the week, including Final Fantasy VII Rebirth details, NCAA Football licensing issues, Octopath Traveler 2's solid sales, and more. Then, let's wrap things up with listener inquiries, as we're wont to do here on Sacred. When do we know it's time to abandon a game? Is Spider-Man 2's map too big? Why hasn't anime fully captured Colin? Did a man named Mark really kill the Vita?

Fuck Greg, but Nick and Kevin, I would love to hear from them….

Marco Maluf

Dustin my boy, you are patently, objectively wrong about Beats. My original over the ear Beats are like the finest studio headphones. There are things in the recording you can hear through them that you can’t using other devices. The EQ is amazing and they cost $300. Since Apple purchased Beats they have become a cheaply made, mass produced, ho-hum product. The EQ is flat, the bass reproduction is non existent, and they don’t even make a premium product that is equivalent to what I have. We purchased my son the first pair of over the ear headphones after the Apple purchase and within a year all the foam had dried up and the faux leather had all flaked off. They look like a dog chewed them up. Stand down, or up, or even better… stand corrected.

Greg Hommel

Yeah, it’s a hot take for sure. All you’ve gotta do is look up footage of Philadelphia, Portland, Sam Francisco, the list goes on

Adam Barnes

Ok maybe just wishful thinking then that the newfound bong rips & other observations were correlated. Hope you’re doing well.

Grosface

I’ve smoked weed every day since 2003. LOL.

Colin Moriarty

"Chris decides to die" 😶

Aladin_Run

The framing of the climate question isn't the best way to go about it. The climate crisis makes natural disasters more likely; not necessarily causing or not causing some.

Kyle Fox

I think it’s the adjustment of his medication. Give it time, I think it’ll be for the best for Colin

Kyle

Calling Saudi culture backward while watching the decay of American culture is quite the take. I dunno, there was a time I would’ve agreed with you 100%, but the times they are a changing

Kyle

You need to stand down.

Adam Barnes

Been listening since day 1. Joe Rogan is a big proponent of weed and that man is unstoppable lol

Adam Barnes

Anyway a lot of times people who routinely smoke believe that weed enhances their ability when it’s obvious to everyone else it has the opposite effect

Grosface

I don’t at all but I’m sure I’m not the only one who noticed he forgot about 15 different basic things he usually rattles off throughout the episode. And maybe you haven’t been listening very long since he talked about dialing back for a while a year or so ago

Grosface

Gene and jaffe are awesome, Chris is still playing doom and prey in 2023

Sam Brown

When did he ever stop smoking? I think you just hate weed, my guy

Adam Barnes

I can’t stand by and allow the Gene slander to go unchecked lol. Gene is great!

Adam Barnes

Gene and Jaffe are honestly annoying I hope Chris doesn't leave in the future.

DIS-Bee

Well that isnt true - benefits of digital you ignored: tied to your account so no worry of discs getting damaged. Game sharing on consoles, allows you to split the cost of games and share games with friends who might be far away.

TheMuff1nMon

The climate topic, without researching facts. I remember trick or treating as a kid in the 80s-90s & having to have my snowsuit. So snow on the ground for Halloween but now in South Central Alaska we don't get snow that sticks till sometime in November. We also get forrest fires & sometimes ash from volcanoes.

Robert F Friemering

Personally I'd rather the 2 of you than Jaffe. Really don't enjoy listening to him unfortunately, no offense intended.

Wesali1996

I feel like the podcast has become noticeably disoriented and of lower quality since Colin started routinely smoking again

Grosface

I love you guys. I love the podcast. But all I’ll ever play now days is 1/2 games to “beat”. I just play Apex whenever I have time now. Nothing really appeals anymore.

Marc Cairney

The climate has and will change with us and without us. The pivot to climate change just future proofs the talking point. Objectively you cannot you deny climate change as the constant change is what makes “it” a climate.

Travis B

Hello all. I just wanted to say that I don't typically write in and just enjoy the content but I felt compelled to write in and say that I love this podcast. I have listened to gaming podcasts in the past but after becoming a patron I realized I stopped listening to other gaming podcasts and it's because I noticed that this podcast not only gives you weekly gaming news but all the hosts seem genuine and not a cut out of what the audience wants them to be. I also enjoy that every week sacred symbols has some type of news or topic to discuss as where other podcasts will literally say oh there is no news this week and then I hear sacred symbols and of course there is news that others don't want to report because it either doesn't fit there narrative or they choose to ignore it. I don't mean to be blowing smoke up your butts I just wanted to say that I appreciate this podcast a lot. I love that I may not agree with everything but that I feel everyone is included no matter who you are. When I did listen to other podcasts if you didn't agree with their views (even petty views on what games they like) I felt almost like I wasn't welcomed there anymore. Sorry for the long post but I didn't know if I could write you all directly rather that take others space up but I couldn't figure that out lol. Love you guys and keep the great content coming. Thank you all for giving us a great , welcoming, fair, and honest gaming podcast. You have a patron here for life. Take care.

Kevin Padua

And let’s be honest - that same attitude extends to gaming itself, or opining on the news. One only has to listen to what we’re playing section and listen to how Dustin talks about video games vs Chris. I think that Colin’s belief that you should dance with the one that brought is a real important principle for him to stick with. But, it’s clear to me Chris heart ain’t in it, and that makes the podcast worse. I am not trying to be parasocial about this - this opinion comes from a listener who has an opinion on the content of his favorite show

Jesse V

I hope Chris remains on the podcast, but he does miss a lot of episodes. Sometimes he can’t help it, but it does seem like he can’t be bothered making a plan b to make an episode when something goes wrong.

Liam

These episodes with just Colin and Dustin are the best ones

Kyle Clayton

+1 for Gene when Colin goes on vacation. I think his personality works better for SS. Or alternate with Jaffe I suppose - but I would be anxious throughout that whole episode lol

Jesse V

I still don't understand how colin doesn't get owning a physical copy is better than a digital one. The only benefit of a digital copy is you can be slightly lazier. To get that slightly lazy, you have to give up so much.

Wayde

I’m stoked about them adding Brooklyn and Queens to Spiderman. I’ve been binging Spiderman PS4 and Miles Morales and I think being in each of the respective Spidermen’s home Burroughs will add a lot to the story.

Anthony Palerino

Please add Jaffe as a backup

JustAnotherDean

Jaffe is very entertaining but his direct nature would be a bit overwhelming on a weekly basis

Moonshot Md

Jaffe as the show’s pinch hitter is brilliant. Would the show have a different energy? Absolutely, but that’s the beauty of him appearing once in a blue moon. A rare treat for the audience. Respectfully, Dustin needs to stand down.

Kickstand

Colin, the “predictive input” thing you’re describing is similar to the principle behind rollback netcode for fighting games. Basically, the game predicts what move the other person might make next in an online match—if that prediction is correct, then it comes across as seamless, but if it’s incorrect there’s a very minute adjustment made (like a few frames). However, I think that prediction still has to occur locally on each person’s machine, so it doesn’t really solve the issue of a server handling that task, and it’s simpler in fighting games where there are only so many inputs that can be made.

Superhero Jagganath

Sea of Stars releases August 29th.

Jeremy Seal

Thank god they cut out Colin’s opinions On Ukraine. Would have been unlistenable

Ryan

I switched to android, and I vastly prefer it. I can get any ringtone for free, I never see any ads, I run emulators for classic consoles. It's so much more open and free. To each their own, I guess. I do feel like a ton of apple consumers are cult-like.

Jeremy Seal

I'd love to see more Jaffe on any of the LSM shows. I can see where people are coming from with his chaotic energy, but I personally find it refreshing and do not mind shows having slightly less structure.

Andy

I think jaffe or gene would be great fill ins if Chris or Dustin can't make an episode.

Josef Barker

🤨do we have room for political views in gaming media?

ᴮᵁᴺˢ

It pains me to hear that Greg doesn’t talk to Colin anymore even in just a polite and passing way. Considering Colin & Greg is the reason KF exists today. And to answer your question Colin. Yes. You and Greg would still make a killer podcast, once all the cobwebs get dusted off. Maybe one day. Either way I will always rock with LSM. And PS I disagree with all the Jaffe slander I think those episodes are magic and think jaffe on a SS ep would be awesome.

Nic N

Most ancient religions were based of alien contact. They all talk about beings from the sky that guided them. Not to mention the ancient structures that were built with advanced technology.

Jeremy Seal

Ehhh I like Jaffe but he can be a little too combative and a bit too prescriptive/controlling in how to play games (I.e. “you should play this” or “you need to play this way”) - it’s kind of exhausting. I say keep him on the supplemental episodes or give him his own little project. I like the open and relaxed energy of this show too much.

Jeffrey Rommel

The fact that Greg won't even respond to a private message from Colin just reminiscing about Beyond, is an incredibly shitty attitude from him tbh. It would be cool for old times sake if they could meet up and do a show, but even Colin questions if they'd be able to now as it's been so long. It's bas enough that KF distance themselves from Colin so much for public perception. But it's the fact that Greg wants absolutely nothing to do with Colin, even privately, which is most disappointing.

Deemac

“If I’m podcasting with someone in Australia “ wait you wouldn’t happen to be doing something with the Do go on podcast network would you? I’ve been trying to get them to reach out to you guys

Captain Bon Clay

Andy is the homie but I feel like he’s been pulled in too deep to that hivemind mentality at times. I’d love to see Nick, Kevin, and maybe even Snowbike Mike make appearances. They’ve always been their own man.

NeO JD

Wouldn’t be surprised if that Yuji Naka storyline turns into an actual Yakuza side quest. 😄

NeO JD

They are already saying get used to these smoke events as the "new normal" Feel like we are far past the tipping point already.

Stinkling

Agree, its nice to hear Colin still talks to both of them off and on (or at least used to it hasn't been brought up recently). Love Nick and Andy, cant stand KF or Greg.

Stinkling

I respect your opinion on Greg, but I have come to lose virtually all respect for him. I used to like him more than Colin, and I watched KF for a long time after Colin left, though the situation involving Colin’s exit always felt like a gross betrayal. Greg’s charisma and charm used to feel almost magical at times, and him and Colin together were phenomenal; but, Greg changed. Once I started to pick up on how incredibly disingenuous he is, I couldn’t un-see it. It’s so obvious, now. Everything he does seems so blatantly for the purpose of elevating himself to look as moral and virtuous as possible. Moral, good people don’t have to talk about how moral and good they are. What I really wish is that Nick and Andy could join LSM. I freakin loved them. They’re the only ones I miss from KF. Tim Gettys—pardon my slander—may be the definition of douche.

Miracle Peach

Great show boys and shoutout to Attack on Titan 🤘🏼

Henry Velasco

I listen to Sacred Symbols and Kinda Funny regularly. I know its none of my business, but it really is unfortunate to hear Greg doesn’t want anything to do with Colin anymore. As a listener, I remember the numerous times Colin would remark that there would never be a more iconic duo in the video game industry than he and Greg. When he left Kinda Funny, the sentiment at the time was that they WERE going to do shows together, but its clear that was just an attempt to keep both parties’ public image in a better light. I’m always hopeful that someday we can get that promised show or just know that things are good between the 2 coolest dudes in video games. Much Love ❤️

Jeremy Carter

Colin has reached out to Greg to meet/talk, but Greg turned him down. He’s far too busy making it known to as many as possible how virtuous he is.

Miracle Peach

Summer Games fest was overall decent. FF7 Rebirth, Ever Crisis, new sonic (haven’t played any of them since Sonic 3 on the genesis), Remnant 2, and a few others look good to great. Ugh Cloud gaming is just a bad idea. Digital only is already anti consumer, and cloud gaming will be ever a step further.

PairOfShuse

It would be lovely to have Greg or any of the kinda funny crew on last stand or vice versa if the situation ever came up. It’s been along time since anything went down and time to let go of old shit. Your all older now and in a situation to elevate each others content. It would be fun to see if it was possible of course

Will Ellis

And you keep all your stuff when you die.

Noah Friscopp

Yeah the argument that it has to take some major, completely no questions asked, obvious cataclysm like the moon turning green to prove that it's happening doesn't hold water. A nuanced, gradient-scale problem is still a problem worth tackling, especially since by the time there is something THAT bad and THAT obvious it'll probably be completely too late to do anything about it.

Travis Johnson

Jaffe has been my most wanted addition to Last Stand Media since I first heard him talk with Colin, so I'm hyped that he might join more frequently.

All of the wild fires are natural (unless arson is involved) but climate change exacerbates the likelihood that these occur

Joshua Jones

Please don’t add Jaffe to Sacred Symbols.

Adam Barnes

I would love to see Greg here I still love Greg and I sad that you guys are not doing stuff together. Oooh and F@#$ IGN for not bringing you on the Podcast Beyond

Joshua Jones

Colin, Fwiw I'm not into souls games whatsoever, but Remnant didn't strike me like that when I played it. It has "bonfires", but so do the Jedi games. The original was on PS Plus and got a 60fps patch for PS5. As a lover of shooters, I highly recommend you give it a shot. It might surprise you.

Ealia Staroverov

The Vita dug its own grave with $80 memory cards.

Zackery Parkerson

Colin having trouble with that great apple technology. Also, starts off the show with "Chris is gone". And I ask, "is Chris dead?"

Angel DeJesus

Please don't put Jaffe on main show. He's ok in small doses, but I really think his energy could ruin the show for me. I'd prefer it just be Colin and Dustin if Chris is out.

Michael Rogers

No Greg on the show please...

BigPapiJ

I think Kiryu is brought back for another game in Yakuza because of the game Judgement’s issues with Johnnys the talent agency’s refusal to let them release on PC. This may stymie the series as Sega seeks to expand into PC as a focus.

Ryan Harvey

I prefer either Colin, Chris and Dustin or just Colin and Dustin if Chris is out. Jaffe's energy is too chaotic so I prefer he stay for the extra content so I can decide to dip in or out. I know Colin has he really doesn't listen to our opinions and just goes off his own instincts like when he added Dustin to the show. But I do believe the show would be fundamentally different and would prefer to keep the show how it is.

Context Should Matter

I don’t think Greg would come on the show at this point due to the backlash kinda funny would receive. They have to satiate they industry bubble they still exist in. Last Stand is an island outside that bubble that is viewed as a threat.

Noah Trujillo

One thing I’ll disagree with on the Saudi thing is that It’s about the money. For the Americans going over there and working it is. But for the Saudis this is about reputation. Thats what sports washing is. And this is games washing. I have no doubt every game these guys produce will be exceptional, not because they want the revenue, but because it slowly and surely alters people’s perception of them. That’s why they’re throwing so much money at some of the industry’s greatest. The one place I’ve noticed this hasn’t really “worked” is with WWE.

Cai

Colin don’t listen to Dustin about jaffe. Jaffe is the perfect fill in. MORE JAFFE PLEASE!!!!!

Chris C.

Personally I absolutely love Jaffe and would love if he was on Sacred but I also agree the show might become too long in all sorts of wonderful ways. I think replacing a SS+ with Colin and Jaffe once a week would be magic.

Dylan Michael

I bought my vita in late 2012 during hurricane Sandy. Staten Island was in ruins and I as out there on the local bus to buy the AC 3 Liberation White Vita Bundle
