Sacred Symbols+, Episode 303 | Understanding Mortal Kombat

For my birthday in 1993, my mom bought me Mortal Kombat on SNES. In truth, I had actually pleaded for it, and timing is important, because I was doing so against the backdrop of the US government's attack on it, making things difficult (but obviously not insurmountable) for fourth grade Colin. But unlike its contemporary Street Fighter, which stuck with me for a long time to come, Mortal Kombat fell to the wayside for me as the SNES era turned to N64 and the original PlayStation. Fast forward all of these years later, and I'm in as much of a fog as ever. The reality is this: Mortal Kombat doesn't speak to me, or so I think. But I'm not sure I can even describe why. And in actuality, I want to understand it. I want to understand as much as possible. So with Mortal Kombat 1 launching on PS5 in September, and with audiences so excited for it, I invited friend-of-the-show Ian of 616Entertainment to Sacred+. Why? Well, Ian's an expert and mega-fan of Mortal Kombat. I have a lot of questions, and as it turns out, he has a lot of answers. So get over here and give our conversation a listen.

While Public Enemy was at the forefront of political-activist hip hop, they weren't really known for being controversial in the eyes of the media. I think the rap parallel that you meant to draw was the media controversy of N.W.A. and the advent of the Parental Advisory/Explicit Content sticker.

Agreed. I like Colin but he is out of touch with fighting games. SF 6 is good and it's not all about World Tour. It would be interesting to see him talk with Woolie.

It's so fun to hear conversations about this series as I don't get to gush about MK with many in my own life. MK is what a call a pocket fandom for me, where I am in love with it and then trail off after a year, totally forget about it, and then get hit on the new announcement. Netherrealm is the King of "going away" and coming back strong

This is a great ep, though I wish a guy like Maximilian Dood would come on or someone of his caliber or more to talk about fgc and explain why a game like SF6 is a Street Fighter and not focusing on the Would tour mode (which I think is more of a final fight inspiration).

As someone who was captivated by MK at toddler age (parents wouldnโ€™t let me play but my older brother would let me watch), it was fun to get nostalgic about a series I havenโ€™t played as much lately. Loved the Noob Saibot shout out, he was my favorite in MK9, such an easy character to cheese moves with.

Colin, I hope this doesnโ€™t sound mean-spirited, but you sound very out of touch with modern fighting games and especially with your thoughts on SF6. The overwhelming majority of people who purchase fighting games do not play online, so World Tour is a great single-player mode to entice new players, but it is not the core of SF6. Capcom also added a โ€˜Modern Controlsโ€™ option to help casuals with inputting specials and basic auto-combos. It was actually a stroke of genius. This game is very new player friendly with its controls and offline single-player content, but where it really shines is through its online/multiplayer systems. This is the first time SF has rollback netcode. Ranked and Casual play work flawlessly. The Battle Hub is great for social networking with friends and randoms. You can follow pro players or anyone you meet and watch their replays and spectate their games in real-time. The lobby system is incredible for holding player matches or tournaments. The list goes on. This is the most full-featured fighting game weโ€™ve ever had. 10/10

Colin I think youโ€™re overestimating how much the World Tour mode(the mode where you build your own character) in SF6 is part of the game. Itโ€™s just one mode in the game. Iโ€™ve barely touched it and have no intention of playing it. But Iโ€™m obsessed with the game. What everyone loves about SF6 is how good the fighting game is at its core. All the character designs are sick, the new drive system is really cool, the net code and the input latency is great, etc. Itโ€™s just the best Street Fighter has been in years. The World Tour mode is just an added bonus but itโ€™s not the main draw. Me and my friends arenโ€™t even touching it but weโ€™re all loving SF more than ever.

I greatly enjoyed this episode. May I suggest a similar one for each fighting series and then afterwards a Letโ€™s Play where Colin has to fight the cohost in the said game!

The world tour mode in street fighter 6 is just an additional game mode, not the whole game. And it seems like a lot of the enfranchised players aren't engaging with it, it's a way to bring in new players. Stop yelling at clouds, old man.
