Sacred Symbols+, Episode 305 | An Examination of The Light in the Darkness: A Game About the Holocaust

Please welcome seasoned game dev Luc Bernard back to Sacred+. Luc first appeared on our show back in 2021 (Episode #126) to discuss his upcoming game concerning an unusual topic for our sphere: The Holocaust. Originally aimed for launch in 2022, it just recently launched for free on PlayStation 5 and PC, and -- as promised -- I invited him back to the show to discuss it in great detail. The Light in the Darkness costs only an hour of your time, that's it. Indeed, the person who made it funded it out of his own pocket and asks you for nothing in return. What you receive from that hour will vary, of course, but something tells me most who play The Light in the Darkness will be deeply touched by it. We spoil the game completely within the confines of this podcast, and we talk unabashedly about history and politics, too. You've been warned on all fronts. For those with an open mind and an eagerness to experience new things: Enjoy.

“Marjorie Taylor Green is not a Nazi” is definitely a yikes. I want to get into history games but everyone who actually tries to depict WWII and seems hyper obsessive about it has a really weird narrative. You can throw that in the bin as you call it. Wildly irresponsible to go around talking about actual neo-Nazis and removing the label Nazi from them while promoting a game about the holocaust.

Fantastic episode, thank you! In terms of the reception from the gaming press... There are generally two categories of people for whom race is of paramount importance. 1) Nazis (and other racial supremacist groups), and 2) the intersectional/diversity people, like much of the gaming press. Perhaps the latter should spend some time reflecting on how that looks to the rest of us and whether or not that is the kind of company they wish to keep.

Going to have to give this a shot! Recently been down a French history rabbit hole and Vichy France is a blindspot for me. Great episode!

Lovat

Way behind catching up, but this episode was fantastic.

Not sure how it is in Europe but in my experience there is a large emphasis on the individual human experience of the Holocaust in the u.s. educational system. It's not all about numbers . They brought in Holocaust Survivors to talk about their experience when I was in Elementary School, in middle school we had to read the the Diary of Anne Frank , do a deep dive on all that , in high school we had to read Victor Frankel's man search for meaning. Do a deep dive on all that, we also took a trip to a Holocaust Museum. These werent even part of history class. It was literature and humanities classes. So it was all about the people. I went to normal public schools. I think most kids have similar experience learning about the Holocaust.. I'm only 31 so maybe things have changed since I went to school. I know there are people trying to ban anne Frank.

I’d love a game like this, from Colin, about the civil war or the American revolution……. If Colin never makes a game like this it’ll be a huge missed opportunity… I think it’s what everyone wants? I hope this inspires him!

John Warner

“Pretty much”

This story is so important, nuanced, and historically relevant that it should be put on free feeds. Thank you for this wonderful episode, Colin.

Please release this episode on to free feeds so we can share it, it's too important to keep behind a pay wall?
