Sacred Symbols, Episode 260 | The Marathon Can Humble You

Great intrigue surrounds Bungie's upcoming revival of its long-dormant FPS IP Marathon, first confirmed (but long-rumored beforehand) at the recent PlayStation Showcase. Post-show reporting outlines an ambitious service title, but questions linger about Bungie's current and continued handling of Destiny 2, not to mention if the storied developer finds itself newly-distracted by a demanding parent company. Let's take some time to dissect current-day Bungie and get to the heart of Marathon's promise (or lack thereof). Plus: PlayStation Studios loses its head of mobile gaming before he ever releases a game, Konami's upcoming Metal Gear Solid collection sounds pretty awesome, Electronic Arts' studios split into two separate entities, and more news, rounded out -- as always -- by inquiries from the audience. Have we ever encountered a spiritual or religious issue with a game? Why, exactly, are turn-based games fun? Does voice chat give us anxiety? Did Colin really need to learn about the true wonders of "marinating"?

Colin, the only thing that is wrong with your outlook on digital games -vs- physical games, is that you are the outlier. It would do you well to admit that you are living an alternative lifestyle. You are taking the risk. You are relinquishing your power. You are trading liberty for security. All of which is fine, as long as you acknowledge that people that hold on to physical software are doing the practical and normal thing. Can you do it?

Greg Hommel

It was a joke mate. Didn't think anyone was gullible enough to believe me

Chris Adams

😂😂😂 okay lad.

Adam Barnes

Yeah, was a bit disappointed by that. That ruined a big surprise that would have otherwise been unexpected. Guys, if you're going to request we don't spoil things for you please don't spoil things for us, even if the media discussed is of little relevance to you.

Nikitas Gagas

I think that if Sony ever banned my account, I'd probably just pirate all of the games that I bought from them... I have the whole list in spreadsheets so I know what I purchased. I know this comes up every time, but I'm both a physical and digital gamer, but I consider them to take different niches. Physical games are for the ones I'm buying day-1 at full price. Digital games are for buying games I'm skeptical of, or less interested in, and when they drop down to sub-$25 ranges. Sometimes I'll even rebuy a game I bought physically once the price is down around $5 digitally. Then I have the backup copy for lending, or playing on a tertiary system, and a digital copy for convenience when playing on my primary system. The world of marathon looks great, but an extraction shooter, and live service? Completely lost interest once I heard that.

Kaz Redclaw

The Flash spoiler should have been bleeped out. Less than two weeks from release, too soon.

Justin Jackson

I recently realized my EA account was banned for no reason at all, I don't think I've even used the account and the last EA game I played was fallen order. It's fine, because I don't play EA games anyway, but if it was my PlayStation account like Colin said, I would be done with video games, basically thousands of dollars would have gone to waste. It does happen, and I don't trust Sony customer service to fix anything, as they've been useless about many problems I've had over the years with their products (for example my Miles Morales copy had no PS5 Upgrade option, which I bought in order to buy spiderman remastered that I couldn't actually buy)

Cornelius

Tbh I think Chris' point about digital games is pretty tone-deaf. Last week I realized my EA account has been banned, without having used it for over 5 years and basically having done nothing. It's fine because I don't care about EA games anyway, but if my PlayStation account was banned for no reason I wouldn't "just buy" $2000 worth of games again. Not everyone has $2000 lying around. I do agree that digital is the future but we needn't downplay the issues it forces on consumers.

Cornelius

Regarding physical, although it's a niche, I don't think Colin considers Blu-Ray watchers like myself. My PS5 is my sole 4k Blu-Ray player that I use weekly to watch films on disc

Chris’s Mad Katz comment LOL

Alec Davis

I don’t know if anyone has brought this up, but I was watching the discussion about dogs and losing dogs and I couldn’t help but post a link to the video of Scott Van Pelt on Sports Center giving a tribute to his dog after they passed. 100% worth a watch https://youtu.be/eq5MzDq39tw

Eric

Did you enjoy being home schooled?

Chris Adams

Physical users hate the environment

Chris Adams

they did not as MGS1 was running from emulator so it was a vanilla version of the game and you still had memory card and controller ports emulated in the background and accessible through console's UI.

tejotl

Looking forward to a FFXVI discussion once you guys have played through it. While not without its flaws, the game game quite awesome. Hope you're enjoying your time with it as well.

Nikitas Gagas

I was barred from playing Banjo Kazooie and even watching Pokémon due to religious reasons. My parents saw the witch in Banjo and decided it was an evil game.

Animated

Leaving dead bodies on Mt. Everest reminds me of the old Conversation With Colin where he talks about leaving dead spider corpses on the walls to send a message to the other spiders. #ProMove

Kevin Cooper

Oh man, I have no confidence that Konami will update the controls for MGS. Did they on the PS3 collection?

Jeffrey Rommel

For most, that's true I would say! I'm an exception to that but I agree with the sentiment.

Quinnton from Seattle

James Earl Jones did sell his voice rights for star wars recently i believe. They can use AI for anything they need moving forward with Star Wars. Assuming for perpetuity since he is retired.

XnXblkout

Colin and Chris are a couple of divas lol

Adam Barnes

I’m just flabbergasted they could spend another 40 minutes having the exact same argument they’ve had a dozen or more times on the show. No one is changing anybody’s mind about this.

Zackery Parkerson

I can not wrap my head around people who find swapping discs to be inconvenient. It takes a total of five to ten seconds. In no world should that be too much effort to exert. I really strive to not be judgmental, but I can not believe anyone would find that to be a laborious process.

Zackery Parkerson

You fuckers lol. The section between “soaking” and “…and that’s fully erect, too!” Fucking killed me and I was rolling on the floor laughing and crying because it just… kept… going LOL. Keep up you witty chicken fuckers. Here’s to marinating our skin flutes!

The Devmeister

My wife was at that concert where Bebe Rehxa got hit with the phone lol. She had to go to the hospital immediately

Jose Horrach

As a christian, Playing diablo 4 (as a necromancer) makes me uncomfortable lol

Travis B

he's still in an influential position to his audience

Ryan

Your boy King from the Iron Lords podcast is definitely one of those fanboys you’re talking about. And since you sorta already have a relationship with him he might be a good pick. Did you see his insane “Hold the line” call to arms to his fellow Xbox fans. That’s some fanboy ass shit, even though I like him and find him funny. Also Colt Eastwood is also probably king of the Xbox fanboys. On the PlayStation side, there’s so many of them but I can’t think of any that are big enough to rate.

Bogey Zero

Well 12-13 and 15 had what I wouldn’t consider a traditional turn based rpg. I like it a ton and it’s a FF game because they made it. So I’m not sure what the problem is, they have evolved a long time ago and it is what it is. My two cents is, I’m about 6 hours in and I’m enjoying my time with it.

Michael Thew

Man regarding discourse online - Final Fantasy 16 discourse is horrid. Definitely correct how it’s either black or white without any nuance. Been seeing people saying it’s not Final Fantasy and people saying it’s the greatest game in the series (even when people haven’t even finished the game). It’s a huge departure from Final Fantasy so far and I’m 15 hours in. Honestly to me it feels more like generic revenge fantasy with some hints of Final Fantasy within. It isn’t bad but there are a lot of things I can see people not liking. From a Final Fantasy fan of almost 3 decades, it’s going to rub people the wrong way in some ways.

PairOfShuse

Dustin your thought on inviting “fanboys” or anyone that is not just on the straight and narrow is boring. And frankly people have had that mentality towards Colin himself, why give him a “platform”. Very boring. Last Stand is important, but don’t start placing too much self importance on it. Be free and even be reckless it’s all good, I mean that 100%. Please don’t be some odd gate keeper

Zack E

Yes, your incessant and contemptuous replies I’m sure are going a long way in helping him realize that. Gosh, the irony of you telling him he needs to self reflect.

MomsLikeMe

A counterpoint to the physical games argument. It hard to see a scenario where Sony fails, or restric acces to current owned digital games for all users. Any of these scenarios, if even remotely possible it would happend in decades. By that point, who cares? You will be able to emulate any ps5 games on your brain. The true preservation of games happens in emulation, as even physical copies will decay eventually. Maybe the big companies can fail, even if its hard to imagine, what will never be destroyed, short of Armageddon, is the Internet.

Pasqual Ribot

Yeah but it’s entertainment, I’m not taking anything they say seriously

Robbie Cooper

Robbie they have an audience. This isn’t a coworker speaking his mind.

Ryan

I really hope he does some self reflection and understands some of the ideas he pushed to his audience

Ryan

No, he has an audience. This isn’t your buddy saying something strange to you in the car.

Ryan

It was weird seeing that negativity in the community for sure. Don’t know how people could be fans of yours and not know that’s not cool. The marinating segment was hilarious. I wonder if FF16 will be the one Chris ends up liking. I think it could be. Col, GameStop might not sell you a game for $3, but best believe if it’s already $3 on the PSN store, it’s been $3 on eBay and such physically for way longer.

NeO JD

Badass title for the episode

Whitewinwolf

Did leaving this comment make you feel better?

MomsLikeMe

Like Chris said, giving a platform to a fanboy would take away from another episode of other things. It’s really not worth it imo.

Brandon Soto

I largely agree with this. 9 out of 10 times, I play a game in performance mode if it's offered, but I'm playing FF XVI in graphics mode. The frame rate mode is too variable, even with VRR because it's often below 48 fps. I'd rather have a smooth 30 and let my eyes and brain get used to it, especially with all cutscenes being 30 fps in both modes. But I will say, there is way too much motion blur effect that is really smearing camera pans. Hopefully we can get a slider to turn down the effect at some point. I also don't really get why this game can't manage a smooth 60 fps on PS5. I mean it looks great and all, especially the lighting and shadows, but this game doesn't seem to be doing anything crazy to me. Sadly, high frame rates will probably become less common as time goes on (without a pro console), but it's not really inevitable. It's all about how developers choose to use the power that's available; some will choose performance, others graphics or other things. Personally, I think graphics are generally good enough at this point and would like 60 fps (or higher!) to be the target for almost all games, but not everyone agrees with that.

Matthew Cooper

People need to quit being sensitive every time someone doesn’t agree with them on something. Get over it, no need to write in and bother these guys who are strictly here for our entertainment and nothing more. Hopefully it’s recognized they are our entertainment and nothing they say should have any weight to anything. Anyways, good episode

Robbie Cooper

Going from that to talking about "soaking" and "marinating" is why this podcast is on top

Brannon H

I've never understood the obsession with the titanic but I would 100% do a 1-way trip to another planet.

Brannon H

Christ… move on.

Adam Barnes

Colin completely forgot Horizon Forbidden West was his game of the year for 2022.

Joseph Gedgaudas

If you are going to take controversial positions such as “gay and trans people aren’t oppressed” expect push back.

Ryan

Treasure every moment you have with your dogs, guys. I lost my dog of over 15 and a half years last month and the thing that's stuck with me the most is how deeply I miss the little personality quirks he had. He had a really shrill bark that physically hurt my ears and he ate extremely slowly to the point where it drove me crazy. But now that he's gone, I would gladly bare with those things just to have him back.

Adam Razak

Only dirty shisnos are going to play marathon

Michael Thew

60 fps while gaming is obviously objectively better than 30 fps but I'm with Chris: inconsistent wildly variable 40-60 fps is rougher than a locked 30 fps. My tip would be to just from the start menu enable the 30 fps fidelity mode and give yourself one hour to play it that way. Do not switch back and forth in game between frame rate and fidelity because you will obviously notice and it will be jarring. But if you just start the game at 30 and keep it that way, your brain will almost certainly adjust and it won't feel as heinous as when Colin was spinning the camera and showing it off to Micah. I think we're all getting a tad overdramatic about 30 fps. Plus as the generation goes on and cross gen support is dropped, this is going to happen more and more.

Mike Po

Fyi you can plug your xbox controller into the console

I really don't think the oxygen tanks purchasable in the market place sounds p2w..I highly doubt they would say it's expensive when they described it lol

drivebyjoe

Anyone else get a little aroused when Daddy got stern with the audience? No, just me?

Adam Barnes

Can confirm Dustin. As a new PS5 owner having PS+ premium is nice. I plan to use the service and then pick up whatever games I enjoy from the service whenever they are on sale. I’m only a couple weeks in though, and the sales have been crazy, but I’m mostly enjoying my time with the PS5 (my last PlayStation was the PSP).

Love the GI Joe updates

Not necessarily what you're looking for, but Katherine Dee has intelligently written and spoken a lot about how modern fan culture is shaping society. Here's her Twitter handle if you're curious to reach out https://twitter.com/default_friend?t=j2XbsBd2xB_8ZXJYljV0ug&s=09

I reccommend watching the Gmanlives review of Trepang2 on YouTube. He basically says the game play is really awesome, but the story and campaign is very disjoinedt and doesn't really serve the game play, not even as an excuse for the action. That being said I think it looks awesome but FFXVI is taking up all my gaming time for the next few weeks.

Clint

In a fun bit of comedic timing. When Chris mentioned that his parents were vacuuming. I happened to be walking past someone vacuuming. Briefly I thought "that's a loud ass vacuum they've got." Only to have Dustin shatter the illusion not a second later.

Lovat

Being in the military I was told GI Joe stood for Government Issue because everything we are given including ourselves are Issued by the Government

Hose A Contra Razz

Thanks for always maintaining a civil discussion; hopefully the community can better reflect that.

Hidari Shotaro

There was a jump humping scene in the TV show Jury Duty on Amazon Freevee where James Marsden jumps on a bed for a couple lol.

Mateusz Kuklinski

I liked Colin better when he wore glasses. His new look is boring as hell.
