That's because PlayStation settled on what it frankly could have always had, namely a 10 year deal for access to Call of Duty that runs into the mid-2030s, keeping the cash-cow franchise on Sony hardware for a long time to come. Is this an ideal situation for Sony? Certainly not. But that's their problem, not ours, and at least we can flip the page to make way for more interesting topics! Other news this week includes an interesting, years-late update to Dreams that could have at one time saved it from inevitable failure, drama surrounding the PC launch of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, release dates for Firewall Ultra and Goodbye Volcano High, and -- perhaps most importantly -- PlayStation 5's meteoric sales, as it continues to move at an extremely brisk pace around the globe. Listener inquiries wrap the show up, per usual, touching on topics like Baldur's Gate III, the potential return of Einhander, the PlayStation-centric censorship of indie title LISA, and thoughts on whether Colin compliments Dustin enough, which apparently he doesn't.

2023-07-29 09:18:46 +0000 UTCThe question boy, which has now been answered, is would Ratchet & Clank have run on a PS4, and the answer is no. At least not in an acceptable way. The instances where it will run decently on an HDD are with monster graphics cards that didn’t even exist at the time and 64GB of RAM. I hope that small difference is not lost in the shuffle.

2023-07-28 16:19:39 +0000 UTCBaldur's Gate 1&2 were real time, but you could pause the game at any time to give orders and set up a good strategy for the enemy encounter - so it's the same as KOTOR. These games were awesome - they were dense with content and offered a rich experience, and the big debate at the time (late '90s I wanna say) was wether they were superior or inferior to jrpgs. One offered a superbly directed, more linear cinematic experience where the player had next to no bearing on the plot (think you're just along for Cloud's story in FF7), while the other was an actual ROLE Playing Game with choices and consequences. You create your own character, kill anyone, build your team, find and equip epic gear, talk to people, and there still was an overarching narrative, a main villain and a world to save. Og Fallout games were like that, too, and ultimately the formula hasn't changed much in, say, Mass Effect - though that series evolved more into a linear action game with time, since utlimately in ME you are always saving the world, you can just be a d*ck about it, if you're renegade, and maybe some of the side characters can die at certain points. There were quite a few of those games at the time, using the same engine no less - Baldurs Gate 1&2 were more of a vanilla epic fantasy RPG, Icewind Dale 1&2 were still fantasy, but more 'action' focused since 90% of the game was combat and exploration (beautiful backgrounds, though), and Planescape Torment was a different, very somber, tale with an existencial dredd underline. I remember PT being VERY well written, too, with book-like descriptions, and an awesome story. There was voice acting in these games, btw - not for every vendor or side story, but the most important stuff was voiced (at least in BG2, since I can hear Misc and Boo's lines in my head atm).

The higher the capacity, the more terabytes you can write on them without a disk failure, but there's still a limit to what SSDs can handle, and they have a TBW rating which you should avoid exceeding. Temps also affect their speeds and longevity, so you'd have to cool them sufficiently, and a simple heat sink might not be enough when they're constantly working somewhere in a tight box (you might have to use active cooling, and that defeats the purpose). Regular HDDs are better for this kind of work, but you should use a tougher one specifically designed for constant writing - we use two 8Tb WD turtle series HDDs for our CCTV system at work (26 cameras, depending on the camera 720p-1080p quality, at least a month of footage has to be stored). If you're writing like 5Tb a day, and the drive is rated for 150TBW, it's not going to survive 3 months (the TBW numbers are usually conservative - the drive should work at least 2x as long). If money isn't an object, though, You can totally buy a $1000 8TB SSD or two, and be fine since their ~1800 TBW should last you a while (as long as you're not trying to do 4K 60fps w/o motion detection on 30 cameras), and maybe even outlive an HDD with moving parts and potential points of failure, but a tough HDD that will do the same job, and has no risk of overheating, will net you ~$150.

Meaning that to claim you are criminally insane, you first have to say, “yes I did it, but I was criminally insane” the problem with that, is that if your legal defense is insanity, and the court finds you fit to stand trial, then whoops, you’ve already said you did it. It’s a very difficult bar and is almost certainly not worth faking (I know everyone was joking just filling in I work in the American court system) Also being found criminally insane means being placed in a state psychiatric placement until considered no longer a danger to society, at least in most American states.

The PSVR2 game store isn’t filled with shovelware, it’s very easy to find a game to play. Attempting to play a game would probably help.

I used to be quite fit and played sports regularly and then it just stopped and now i’ve put on weight and am nearly afraid to go back play sports because I know i’m going to struggle for quite awhile. It’s nothing too drastic and it’s still saveable so thank you for bringing it up Colin, it’s a great idea.

They bought them for King, IP, Dev Teams, and most importantly the 70% of each COD transactions on PS and 100% on Xbox. If PS makes $1 Billion a COD on sales and microtransactions, that means Xbox makes over $3 billion on PS alone and now they get an extra 80% on Xbox, along with whatever Mobile and PC rake in.

I want proper RPGs (where you inhabit a character in a world and can likewise affect the outcome of the story) like BG to be like BG, where the scope is massive and my choices can effect the story in countless ways. Utter freedom, immersion, escapism etc. (It sounds like those games just aren't your thing given your reaction to Starfield, and that's fine too) Indy RPGs shouldn't be forced to match that scope, especially if they've no interest in doing so. But when AAA devs come out, making 'RPGs' with bigger budgets and allegedly bigger scopes and say they can't match BG3, that's the triggering thing. And you made my point (one I don't think I made well at all) by bringing up Assassin's Creed. The world of BG is a fraction of the size of ANY AC game, and yet it's clear as day it has infinitely more breadth and scope. Shallow Ocean vs a 100m deep pool. Naughty Dog shouldn't feel pressured to make the next Last of Us have seven millions endings and last sixty hours. But when devs that make RPGs - like from Ubisoft, CDPR, Bioware - say they can't match it? That it's impossible? That's...a big turn off. And sad. Maybe it's a bit similar to how you feel about 2.5D games. It's more economical to make them that way, and I'm sure you understand when Indy devs come out and say they need to do it that way - I imagine you'd feel differently if a hypothetical AAA dev that made Castlevania games used 2.5D too, claiming poverty and saying sprites are just too difficult to do.
