A Poll For Patrons On Perspective

I realize this is an unexpected poll, but it's a pretty important one, especially with the start of the new year.

To me, some of the most immersive videos I've seen take place in 1st person POV. BUT there are a lot of amazing videos out there that are in 3rd person that could also be converted into VR from 2D. So, my question is, do you want to see some 3rd person videos, or 1st person only? I have done some 3rd person videos before, and you can do some amazing things with the camera that allows you to catch multiple angles... but if you don't want it, I am not going to do it.

Let me know what you think with the poll, and of course feel free to leave any comments.

Hey! Thanks for the comment. Believe it or not, I actually got my start doing 2D to 3D conversions (with noname55 being my first). It's what set me on the path to converting 2D to VR. Once I borrowed a friends DK2 and transitioned to VR, noname55 started doing his own 3D videos (although he refers to them as VR), so I stopped doing them. Is it way easier to do? Absolutely. It's ridiculously easy with the right programs. Heck, SFM (and most other programs like SFM) can render an animation stereoscopic from the get-go, so any artist can do it with the right setup and patience. If an animation ISN'T innately 3D, you can use a bunch of programs to convert it. Honestly, Dark Dreams won't transition back to this. VR is the future, in my opinion, which is why I went from 3D on my own to creating a studio that focused on VR. I encourage any of you who like 3D to pursue it. If 3D grabs your attention, learn to do it. Or better yet, learn to create your own VR animations. It's the only way the field can grow. It's not that I don't enjoy 3D animations. It's more that VR is superior in my opinion.

I've just found the old tumblr posts by MetsSFM where he made some really great 3D videos in 3rd person/voyeur. They're just 3D, not VR, i.e. they're 2D side-by-side flat videos, resulting in a 3D video that plays as a flat screen that pops out at you. Granted, my phone video player has that format (it has over a dozen formats). All it appears to be is a video, then a second video a few inches to the left that is then spliced to be the left side of the full image to create a 3D flat side-by-side. AND IT WORKS!. That is all I need for a 3rd person voyeur video. It doesn't need to be converted into a 180 degree dome video for each eye. Just make it as theatrical 3D, not full VR. How about that? Easier to do? Take an animation, then do it again a few inches to the left, and splice them together side by side into the same video?

This sounds like the best way of doing things. Why throw away a perfectly good animation if it won't work in 1st person anyhow? Might aswell use it for something.

I think it is pretty clear that first person is preferred (I prefer it myself), but that some of you would be okay with third person every now and again. I will start doing third person animations on the side that just won't work in first person, or that just don't make sense in first person. That way everyone wins.

Dark Dreams

This is exactly why I am considering doing this. I have had so many animations where I spent an hour or two prepping and doing scene building, only to have it just not work or show off everything I want it to. But with a floating 3rd person camera this is easily remedied.

Dark Dreams

I think that would be ideal. I'm open to the idea of 3rd person videos, but I'd rather they don't take up a normal slot.

Varoxic

Sometimes it might be hard to "convert" a non-pov video into first person. I wouldn't mind seeing some videos where the camera is actually where the original creator intended it to be.

FancyJustice

Thanks for the input so far. I appreciate it. As it stands I wouldn't say it is overwhelming, but it looks like the general vote says no on 3rd person. But some of you want it, so maybe I'll do it as an extra now and then? I don't think anyone will complain about an extra video if it isn't taking up a normal slot. We'll see how the rest of the vote unfolds.

Dark Dreams

I'd be okay with different perspective as long as it's only an occasional thing. I feel the focus should still be on 1st person, but if you want to shake it up every now and then I'd be okay with it. Too much 3rd person would get annoying. Once every other month maybe? I'm going to abstain from voting as I don't really fall into either of the 3 categories above.

Kim Åkerman

I feel like the whole entire point for VR is to feel immersed as if you're actually there in 1st person. Any other POV would feel lacking compared to that.

Wapalanga

I'm totally fine with 3rd person vids. VR videos only work as cowgirl, and that gets boring. I've been asking for 3rd person "voyeur" videos in VR for a while now.
