Sacred Symbols+, Episode 318 | Health Is Wealth

A couple of weeks ago, I (Colin) had a random thought: How come we never talk about physical health on Sacred Symbols+? At first blush, such a proclamation sounds peculiar. This is a PlayStation podcast after all. But the reality is, we talk about mental health all the god-damn time, and for good reason. So why do we balk at the other half of the yin-and-yang body-and-mind relationship? Thus, I emailed Cog of Defining Duke fame, since I know he has a passion for health and wellness. Now, I wouldn't call what I have a 'passion,' no, but I do care about it. I exercise vociferously virtually every day, and intermittently fast as a fact of life, day-in and day-out. I do it because I want to at least try to be healthy, keep my weight down, and minimize problems down the road. And it's a challenge. It's a challenge for Cog, too, since all we actually want to do is sit around, play games, and do whatever it is that pleases us. But it can't always be about what we want. Such a mentality is a trap. It leads to bad outcomes.Instead, we sometimes have to care about what we need. So we figured we'd try to help propagate a positive message, that you should earn your gaming time, that you should make dietary concessions, that you should exercise more and get your sleep. Maybe hearing it from our mouths will help someone, who knows?

Comments

Love this episode. Started working out 🏋️‍♀️ in January of this year and I definitely noticed the difference. We need to get a sequel to this soon

Hustle&Motiv8

Colin, try your hand at road cycling. I’m sure you’d dominate

Alec Davis

As a gym rat and a gamer this episode really resonated with me. Great work fellas. Much love from Australia.

Love the pod! Being an athlete and a gamer all my life I’ve been blessed playing football where there was always an emphasis on lifting weights and doing explosive cardio. Colin I think you should maybe try two meals a day and lessening your portions. You can still eat the same stuff but I think that would cut your late night cashew cravings. It’s the schedule I’ve gotten on in my adult life and it works for me.

Tanner Denso

Really enjoyed this conversation and it's an important one to have which I think will be influential for many in the community. Having the right balance is paramount and something I still struggle with but not in the way you might think. Combing this with mental health, I used to suffer from anorexia of which part of was a compulsion to over exercise. I really wanted to do stuff like play games but knew it was a inherently sedentary activity so I used to put my body through the ringer before I would even consider allowing myself the chance to sit down and play games. This behaviour also came into my thinking around food where I used to feel the need to 'earn' my food which is why on a purely personal level I don't like the phrase used in the episode to 'earn' your gaming time, only because I know that was a habit I got stuck into to an unhealthy degree. But I don't want to criticise the conversation for that as I know most people wouldn't go to those same levels I did. Something that made a huge difference to me was getting a personal trainer, I used to have an in person one but now I have a remote one and he provides workouts and nutrition advice based on what my goals are. A good one will have weekly feedback with you to describe how your workouts went and use that feedback to make any adjustments. It's something that gave my exercise more purpose and would highly recommend getting one if money allows.

Kurt Lewin

Halfway through so far and I’m loving this one. Always happy to hear from Cog and this is a great topic. I was at a concert over the weekend and it really reminded just how overweight we are as a society seeing people struggle to climb the stairs in a stadium setting and taking up 2 seats in the bleachers. I feel like Health should be imperative, though it feels wrong to force it on people - it’s a fine line

Simon Pusateri

I mean, I think this conservative aesthetic observation is just objectively true, not a culture war comment

Andrew Christensen

🏋️🏋️

Andrew Christensen

Colin on Sacred Symbols: "let's stop feeding into the culture war!" Colin here: "yeah, looking like you're in shape is a conservative ascetic." lol wut?

Josh Gamez

Great episode. Last Stand is amazing.

Josh Lee

I’m starting this pod as I head to the gym. Stoked.

Anthony Palerino

Most preworkout is going to be 30-60 dollars for a tub of 20-30 servings important ingredients to look for citrulline malate beta alanine anything that boost nitric oxide. Some preworkouts are overloaded with a lot of filler so be weary. Also caffeine is the biggest source of energy and it’s not all the same in all preworkouts so it depends on what your tolerance is Nitric oxide helps the pump and endurance. BCAA and EAA aminos are more for recovery and muscle building. Hope this helps feel free to ask more questions

David Driftmeyer

COG I love the fact you listen to game music when you work out! It really is motivating!

lazer_josh

Does anyone have advice for more energy to fuel workouts? I have tried amino acid power and that helps but is pretty expensive. Loved this episode and want to adhere more to the earn right to play method. I can do better in that department.

Shane Sperry

Really appreciate this episode. I really need to take more time to exercise. Like y’all said in the ep, I’m somebody with kids and a full time job so finding time is key and earning my game time when I can should be more important.

FourEyes Malone

Great listen guys! The “earning your gaming time” is a creed I live by now. At my heaviest, I topped out around 135kg (just under 300lbs). Over the last two years, I have made changes, I run 6kms a day (3.7miles) and am more mindful of what I eat. I’m sitting well below 100kgs now and am much happier mentally and happier with the way I look for sure.

Andy T

Just finished listening to this episode and it was an awesome one. Colin and Cog were right on weight being easier to gain as you get older. I put on 20 pounds the last year since starting my first office job and I could definitely feel it. These past two months, I started being more active and eating less (no binge eating)! My sleep and energy have improved significantly. Now im down 12 pounds in 2 months. Health is wealth indeed and your body will thank you.

Alexis

Also cog has those 24inch pythons. The tricep is what makes the arm look big. To many people focus on the bicep but building both equally will in increase a larger overall look and size. Regardless amazing talk there should be a space for the gym world and gamers to unite. Both are a healthy space for people to relax and decompress. The gym and gaming has saved my mental health immensely. Thanks for another great show and making working out seem easier and more accessible!

David Driftmeyer

Great Talk! Though I would say the protein comments seems a little misleading increasing protein intake doesn’t equal bulking. A lot of people use protein leveraging to help curb appetite. As someone who has lost over 100 pounds I used protein leveraging to help curb my appetite. Protein tends to make people feel more full compared to carbs and sugars. Bulking still comes down to calories surplus. You can take casein or whey isolate and not have to worry about weight gain just because you added those to your diet. Probiotics and digestive enzymes are also a great staple to add to your supplements. Both help with the digestion of carbs and sugars and helps get your gut health in check.

David Driftmeyer

Another EXCELLENT episode. Incredible meeting of the minds great works gentlemen

Been waiting for this fucking pair!! Let’s goooo LSM!

Misko 1023

I'm glad you did a show like this. It's really nice to know that the people that you look up to and admire. They all feel the same things. The show has really helped me cope with my daily anxiety. I don't know how it works but it's just nice listening to people that I like. Talk about things I like. I can't articulate it well. I'm just glad you guys exist.

Asique Alam

Loved this conversation between Col and Cog. This was a good talk to be had with important implications for all of us. Health is wealth indeed. Thank you, boys, for being candid and sharing with us.

David Wilson II

This was an awesome one. As someone who has gained and lost large amounts of weight multiple times, it's so hard to shed the weight, but so so easy to put it all back on. It's so important to stay on top of it.

Eric the human

Easily one of my favourite podcasts LSM has ever done, and I've been here since the beginning. Colin and Cog as a due are a tour de force.

Cameron Box

Rare. Rare is the best name :)

Matt

Great episode. I run long distances as my main form of exercise and it's true about diet being more impactful in terms of weight loss - but would also say that as you said towards the end sleep is vital. Lack of/poor quality sleep makes everything else harder. I describe it as the oil that lubricates everything else we do - exercise, diet, mental health, work - all of it is tougher with lack of sleep

Michael Cook

It’d be great to have a quarterly or bi-annual show like this with others in the LSM or gaming community. An LSM Wellness Check. It’s great motivation.

Jimmy G

Colin I wonder if you’ve looked into Tonal? It’d be great for you because it gives you a game plan. I only know because other busy content creators use it too great effect! Although it is expensive.

Have you considered considering considerations considerately considerate

Keep your house clean and take a 30-45 minutes of your day to workout. Even if you only have dumbbells. You can do a lot with those.

Michael Mashpotato

This is an awesome topic and I can’t wait to listen to this. Personally I’m trying to “earn” my gaming time these past few months.

Matthew Ward

Love Colin and Cog content, always a plus. Could hear these two talk about anything for a couple of hours.

Michael Buffill

Great subject to talk about! There is no hard line between mental and physical health, they both influence each other.

Rich Price

Thank y’all for puttin this out! The hardest part is after the first two weeks.

Have you considered considering considerations considerately considerate

This is exactly what I need, looking forward to listening to this one!
