Sacred Symbols+, Episode 319 | The Making of Twisted Metal (1995) with David Jaffe

Please welcome legendary designer David Jaffe back to Sacred+. Today, Jaffe returns with intent so that we might focus-in on what is perhaps his most iconic game: Twisted Metal, the 1995 western PSone launch title, a car combat extravaganza that spawned a popular and lucrative three generation-long PlayStation franchise. While Peacock's new Twisted Metal live action series is getting attention and acclaim -- rightfully so -- Sony more quietly launched the original game onto PSN in recent weeks for both PS4 and PS5. I (Colin) sat down to play it, frankly not having much experience with it outside of friends' houses and rentals in days past. And I was surprised. I was kinda smitten with it by the end of my Platinum run (#145!), actually, mega-nostalgic for the earliest era of 3D gaming. I simply knew I had to pick Jaffe's brain about every facet of the game, and I knew I wanted The Washington Post's Gene Park along with me. After all, he's a Twisted Metal fan going back to the beginning; I am a mere neophyte in comparison. If you're a PlayStation nerd, a fan of gaming history, or simply love the nuts and bolts of game dev, you are absolutely going to love this episode. Enjoy. (Please note: We spoil the first game in its entirety.)

Fucking loved the ending I went to a strip club with my fiance once, it was actually great. We both got lap dances side by side in the same little booth

David P

I almost pissed myself laughing at the end of this episode. Great stuff.

MarkGrouch

This episode was awesome. I'd love to see more episodes with more devs diving into creation of games.

Michael Welter

This was really informative, and it’s always a pleasure when you got Jaffe and Gene on. Good shit.

NeO JD

I think you’d have better luck just tweeting it at Jaffe.

I really enjoyed hearing David Jaffe's experiences on the making of Twisted Metal. I don't have a lot of memories around the original playstation but Twisted Metal was one of the games I put in a lot of time. Thanks!

John Lewis

Great episode

What a great episode. I remember the first time I played twisted metal. I was in a boys home for troubled kids and we would have TM tournaments. It was an easy way for all us angry kids to get along. I’ll always remember that! Thanks boys!

Big St3ph3n

This was awesome!

Beau!

Showergate

Caleb Peacock

Lol his last bit reminded me of horrible bosses when Charlie got ahold of that dude on Craigslist for wetworks

Michael Thew

Jaffe is a national treasure. The last 5 minutes are the best part of the show. But thank you. I love these games & loves getting some insight from the man.

Kenneth Koepnick

Jaffe is the Man!! Just wind him up and let him go

Napoleon in Rags

Not sure if you guys can, but a similar show about TM2 would be awesome

Brandon Garvin

I don't know if Colin reads the comments anymore but I would really love to hear about how the pc port of twisted metal 2 came about when you do an episode about that game. It might be the first Sony first party game to get a pc port!.

Trapgunner

Such a great podcast. Hearing Jaffe reminisce about the time this game was made in and how ramshackle it’s development was was so refreshing and interesting to me. His candor upon reflecting on that time and the little bits of fun stuff they sprinkled in during the making of was especially memorable to me. Fantastic podcast. More of these Plus pods in this vein! Surely with Colin’s old game dev connections he could dredge up interesting conversations on other PlayStation titles. So so good!!!

Power Glover

This is one of those “instant classic” kind of episodes.

Noah Trujillo

Oh wow that ending made crack up 😂

Douglas Coffin

This is great. I played so much Twisted Metal and Twisted Metal 2.

Drew Lee

David Jaffe is a gem

Joe McPartlin

Jaffe is such a dope dude. I wish I was half as sharp as he is.
