Sacred Symbols+, Episode 328 | Gran Turismo (film) Review Discussion and Spoilercast

It wasn't entirely clear how PlayStation Productions would or even could execute on a watchable, interesting, and quality film rendition of Gran Turismo. After all, the license was first optioned more than a decade ago to no avail. But by leaning on a compelling plot rooted in the deep history of GT and its emphasis on realism, the powers-that-be made the undoable doable. The Gran Turismo movie tells the tale of a gamer-turned-racer named Jann Mardenborough, a dedicated series player who was shepherded through the now-defunct GT Academy, making his far-fetched dream to race real-life cars a reality. And it stars some notable names, including Orlando Bloom and David Harbour (and Ginger Spice!). While it can sometimes come off as somewhat advertorial, Gran Turismo's excessive 'car porn' will nonetheless be enough to keep many people engaged. But in fact, the movie's themes go several levels deeper by asking a simple question: What could you achieve if you were actually given the opportunity to chase your destiny?

Wait you guys can refill your drinks and popcorn?

I’m a huge GT fan. Every game since the beginning. I had zero hope for this film. I follow Motorsport a little and I remember the climax of the film when it happened. I had no idea that was him. It was a good movie and as was said, it had no right to be so.

Don't blame the old man for using a coupon, blame the theater for not training employees better or having a better system for these types of payments. Also, if he's an older gentleman, there's a good chance he is on a fixed budget and that 1.50 is important

Micah’s hate for F&F though. 😄

I’m the same Dustin where I always get an Icee at the theater. Unlike him, I usually drink it and get a refill or two during the advertisements. Then depending on the quality of the movie, I may use “Run Pee” app to get another refill during the film. And then finally one more refill for the road.

I love Gran Turismo and still play 7, but don't fall for the marketing about it being the most realistic. It falls far behind others in realism, but the matchmaking and collecting/single player are still hard to beat

In regards to the Old Guy Coupon story, last time I experienced something like that, I offered to pay for the person’s snacks just to get the line moving but the Old Guy refused my offer and insisted that they take his coupon. I think he cared more about using a coupon than getting the actual food. Most times I go a theater there’s only one kid working concessions and they can easily get swamped

You’re telling me they turned a GAMER into a RACER?!?

Def didn’t see this yet but… still the best podcast for work right now. Fuck ittttt

The team that ran the GT Academy was Nissan Nismo, you can watch the actual GTR crash depicted in the movie on Youtube.

Seen it Tuesday (half price tickets and popcorn for Regal). I felt 3/4 of the movie is good/great. When it is focused on racing or gaming it was fantastic. Loved the mix of gaming aesthetic with real racing. The 1/4 I didn't like was the family drama parts in the beginning that i didn't feel necessary.
