Defining Duke, Episode 141 | Starfield Is Doing The IMPOSSIBLE For Xbox - What's Next?

For years, the Dukes were met with abuse and slander due to their faith in Starfield on how it can serve as a turning point in the current generation. The reviews have come and gone, the talk on the streets has become a bit messy to put it lightly, but the numbers don't lie. Starfield is a raging success across all metrics as it is now Bethesda Game Studios' biggest launch of all time as it managed to beat out the likes of Skyrim and Fallout 4. To do so in an exclusive capacity puts things into perspective even more. With six million players already accounted for and likely millions more beyond that this point, Bethesda has committed to "years and years" of support thus paving the way for Starfield to become the most played Bethesda game ever as Phil Spencer desired. We also get into the mind boggling decisions Unity is making in regards to its popular game engine, Square Enix's recent plummet, the upcoming reveal of Indiana Jones, the Fallout TV show's leaked teaser trailer, and a plethora of more news in a jam packed week.

never said the 7 was a problem. That's one man's opinion. I wish they would stand on their review instead of constantly explaining why they came to that conclusion. I still never cared about scores as a definitive source of truth. Go to the content creators/outlets you respect and form your own opinion.

The Iron Lords Podcast

Fallout 76 is averaging 7-9k players this year on steam DB and starfield hasn’t shooken that, to be fair @Cog

Carter Evenson

COG: These uninformed "7" reviews are a problem! ALSO COG: Uninformed 10s? I don't care about scores.

ByWatterson

I was thinking the same thing.

Alex

It's getting really bad.

ByWatterson

Find it kinda funny how if Starfield got a 90 or above on metacritic everybody would be cheering and bragging but since it scored somewhat softly now the review system is flawed and can't be trusted

Walker Simmons

Good show, as usual. Though I did have to start skipping ahead when Cog starts taking about starfield. He tries to avoid spoilers, but just can't help himself.

Daniel

Bethesda should stick with Elder Scrolls and Starfield and let someone else make Fallout games. Outer Worlds is cool and Avowed seems neat but Obsidian on Fallout would be a dream. Or form a new studio to make Fallout, but Xbox obviously lacks the ability to create studios. After Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed, please give Fallout to the Black Rock.

Anthony Palerino

“We need to be U-NI-FIED against U-NI-TY.” Cog is the best. 😄 #DDMessy

NeO JD

We need more of messy Cog 🤣

Whilst I agree NG+ adds something special to this game, beelining the main story (as I mistakenly did) was definitely not the right decision. The ending for me rang a little hollow considering my character had little to no impact on the world outside of constellation. Part of what is meant to make that ending powerful is having lived a full life in this world, so to have had little to no connections to it before jumping into NG+ made the choice quite empty. I agree the game “reveals itself” again at NG+ and I’m looking forward to it (after I reload and do some side stuff first). But for the ending to have weight and for your NG+ playthroughs to have added interest I wholly recommend exploring and participating in as much as you can before the end. Don’t 100% the game, but do some bigger side stuff, meet new characters and learn their stories - then feel free to start again.

Cai

It's because IGN and Gamespot only gave Starfield 7's and them two both carry more weight on metacritic with their scores

Zack Fair

Matty saying you have to get to the new game plus to really understand what makes it great sounds incredibly unappealing to me.

Joseph Gedgaudas

Starfield is a hard 7/10 and saying "you have to play the entire game and get to new game plus" before you can come to that conclusion is a silly thing to say. The gameplay does not meaningfully change from hour 5 to hour 40 (about where I'm at) if you're gonna introduce major gameplay changes after most players have had their fill and are ready to put the game down that's horrible design.

Branden

Enjoyed the episode y'all. Absolutely preaching about "Entangled."

NotSkyWalker

Total bad faith arguments. I know the success of Xbox is really hinging on this game but the Dukes are really slipping into YouTube fanboy mode.

Dante B

Get early nights, Matty. I don’t know if you guys get the research coming out in the news as much as we do in the UK (I’m sure you will) but sleep patterns is extremely important for health. Try sleep before 11pm so that you can wake up at 7am. 12am needs to become your ‘really late night’ norm. One offs.

Matt

The Starfield review discourse is interesting. I understand that the game content gets better the longer you play. It took me about 35 hours to get to an “oh shit!” moment and since then I’ve been hooked. That being said, it’s fair to criticize the game design when dozens of hours is required before a game “gets good.” It seems like the game probably should do a better job of funneling you towards the truly special content? The game has such a variance between what different people experience in their playthrough. I could see how someone spent 20 hours doing nothing but the boring filler stuff and gave up on the game. I could also see how someone stumbled on The Mantis early on and from there went onto Crimson Fleet, and so on, and have been hooked.

Zeke the Plumber

Here comes the cadre who look at an episode description and start the groan and moan.

Zach

This player count stats will never be impressive to me especially when the game is “free” via gamepass… if it sold 6 million in a week THAT would be impressive to me. Also I’m more interested in starfields metacritic floundering to an 84. Why is it so low for such a big game ?

Big titty drinker

It's pretty much bloody "free" No wonder it's been played a lot. Its pretty unfair to put it against skyrim and fallout when they were full price games if im correct ans also Bethesda was a independent developer then and has no obligation to put it on Gamepass. Llove to see how much Starfield would make, if it was only to buy at full price. Nothing but xbox fanboys salivating over a average game because the past has been bleak for so long!

Zack Fair

Are these the significant others in the thumbnail? 😝
