Defining Duke, Episode 143 | Starfield Is Bethesda's Lowest Rated Game... Worse Than 76?!

As we quickly approach the CMA's deadline for a decision on Xbox's acquisition of Activision Blizzard, we see another significant stride in the deal. The CMA has conditionally approved the acquisition if particular circumstances can be met on the cloud front. Meanwhile, the console wars trek on and Starfield is in the line of fire as it's now been officially rated as Bethesda's worst "official" release ever. There are caveats and we get into it, but also sift through the legitimate criticisms that have chewed up Starfield just as much. Plus, a decent showing for Xbox at the Tokyo Game Show, Jim Ryan is leaving PlayStation, and the Dukes big bet on Dishonored 3!

He said something along the lines of "I understand these games play differently, but they present themselves very similarly." I've heard similar criticism on SS, and I agree with Matty's nuanced version of this criticism. Matty's positive opinions on Far Cry 5 are a "hotter take" than this imo, but hey maybe I'm being too hard on Ubi here.

Like I haven't touched forbidden west because I've been feeling burnt out on the open world Ubisoft formula. So it speaks to me but I know I'm the minority. For more casual players, which is most people, they only play a handful of games in a year so they aren't feeling tired of it yet.

I only really ever see Xbox fans complaining about. In my opinion that’s just a made up narrative by salty Xbox fanboys. Real PlayStation fans don’t really care. Also this idea that they need to make a different style of game is silly as hell too. They are supplying thier fanbase with the games that they want , why on gods green earth would they try to placate fans of another platform that doesn’t believe in buying games? As much as people claim to love all that Sony shit from the ps2 and ps3 era none of that shit sold and that’s the reason it died. I love returnal more than anyone but the game couldn’t even crack 1 million…. You know what sold almost instantly? Ragnorok, HFW and spider man 2. We can talk about diversity and “break your own mold” yada yada ect, ect until we blue in the face. But the the reality is if the core PlayStation fanbase doesn’t care then it doesn’t matter.

What's weird is that X usually means that in the West as well. So, if anything, the mystery to me is how X became confirm in western video games. The symbols might also be entirely irrelevant. Even before Playstation, the Japanese confirm button was on the right side. It might just trace back to Nintendo.

The hand holding, the borderline broken random generation, the barren planets, everything segmented by loading screens. Doesn't shock me its the lowest rated. It was lazy. At least *now* 76 is a fun game, that you can go anywhere in without a loading screen (unless you go indoors somewhere but welcome to creation engine) The only bad thing i could say about 76 is the greedy sub fee and atom store. But its fairly easy to ignore and "play for free" so to speak. Starfield is lazy even by Bethesda standards, so why are we supposed to be shocked? How many times do we let Todd sit their and literally lie about things before we go enough is enough? Its not *cute* anymore, its just proving hes a hack fraud.
