Lies Of P Review Discussion/Spoilercast: The Thread

Salutations!

It is time for us to dive deep into the latest competitor in the souls genre : Lies Of P. Joining me (Matty) are two members of the Punchin' Up crew who need no introduction: Dustin Furman and Gene Park!

Please submit your burning questions, comments, concerns, and ideas for our extended conversation on Lies Of P! As always, we'll begin with a non-spoiler section for those who wish to learn more about the game and maybe even check it out via Game Pass. Afterwards, the gloves are off as we enter spoiler territory.

Hello clever ones, I have seen many people online and in podcasts say this game is the best non-FromSoft Soulsborne game. And while I agree with that assessment, in my opinion the game is still a tier or two below the worst of the Fromsoft games. I agree that the levels are fairly linear, and there is no sense of a connected world with many dead ends. The feeling of defeating a boss, and then being mystified when the level suddenly loops back to somewhere you had previously visited is missing. However, my chief complaint that I have not heard from other players as of yet is the enemy attack design. I think the mechanics of their attacks make combat artificially difficult. Many enemy attacks have active frames on nearly the first animated frame of their swing. Almost all standard enemies also have poise, so you cannot stun them out of their attack animations. Pinocchio has zero poise stat, making using a slow heavy weapon more difficult than it would be in a Fromsoft game. This element of combat was incredibly noticeable to me and dampened my enjoyment of the game. Fromsoft games are tough, but fair. Lies of P was tough, and pretty unfair. Do you all agree with this sentiment of tough and pretty unfair, and do you have any examples from your playthroughs of the game being unfair to you? Have a great day y'all. Hey crew Thanks for taking on a spoilercast! My question is simple: How do you feel about additional P Organ upgrade nodes being locked behind NG+ and NG++? I thought this was a nice addition to the formula along with the garbled language subtitles being revealed and upgraded amulets placed throughout. It finally gave me more incentive than usual to replay a souls game into NG+ Take care and I’ll hang up now and listen.

Hi souls veterans, Is there anything in Lies of P that you would like other souls-like games to implement as well from now on? My choice would be the way the game shows you when you can progress an NPC quest, and where exactly the NPC is at that moment, it made that part of the game so much easier. Wish you guys a very nice day.

Lies of Pi isn’t a Souls-like game, it’s just a straight up Souls game.

Hey all! How did you all feel about the linear design of the game? I've seen a lot of criticism about this, but in my opinion linear games are becoming more attractive especially at a 20-30 hour length. Would you have preferred an open world where you go wherever you want? Thanks!

Hello, Gentlemen! What about that Ending Tease? This could be the game we were supposed to get when American McGee wanted to create their version of The Wizard of Oz and a Soulslike with Dorothy as the main character or even any of the characters from that tale would be incredible. Cheers!

Hey all, Lies of P is so phenomenal, I'm astounded. I knew it would be good, but I wasn't expecting it to be shot up my Top 3 of the year so far. I will say, with the release of this game, I'm kinda not really holding out for a Bloodborne remaster anymore. Lies of P offers the block mechanic i thought BB was sorely missing and I have to say, I think I like Lies much more overall. Glad this game sold so well. That after credits scene will result in something truly phenomenal and what I want out of video games. AA is dominating AAA this year, in my opinion. Phillip

Hey boys! What is the difference between inspiration and clone? I feel like Lies of P is right on that line between the two. Talking to NPC's through a window and sometimes fetching things for them. Leveling up at a powerful plot relevant woman. Even the duels against the other strikers or whatever they are called felt like the clashes against other hunters in bloodborne. Is this an issue? Can you guys think of more examples? Peace and Love

Hey guys! Man, what a special game this is. That post-credit scene was incredible, and really makes me excited for the future of the series! My question is, what fable/fairy tale do you think would make a good edition to future entries? I love the idea of Alice traveling through a horror-version of WOnderland. Thanks and keep a rockin!
