Constellation, Episode 43 | Horror Movies, Karaoke, Colonialism

Welcome back to Constellation! This week, Colin and Dagan are joined by legendary game designer David Jaffe and Last Stand's executive producer, Dustin Furman. Colin wants to discuss colonialism and its lingering presence today, while Dustin would like to talk about horror movies—our best, favorites, and overall thoughts on the enjoyment of being scared. This episode is a bit abnormal, with a few issues that caused Jaffe and Colin to drop out before the final topic. But don't worry; Dustin and Dagan held down the fort with a discussion on karaoke. It starts pretty straightforward but delves deep into the nature of insecurity and rising above it. This might be the most unique episode of Constellation yet, so please enjoy and forgive us for the mid-show mix-up.

Jeffey realizing he is alienated from the real world view is astonishing, too bad he will still defending his completely wrong understanding about the world outside his bubble.

Love you guys but definitely think you guys are lacking knowledge on the native side being affected by colonization and are seeing things only from imperialism perspectives. Whether it’s the Americas or Palestine or anywhere else.

Minya

Awesome episode fellas! I really appreciate the point about waiting for things to settle a bit before "becoming an expert" on something. Constellation continues to be my favorite listen each week.

@Colin regarding Microsoft acknowledging the traditional land owners, in Australia that procedes every major sporting event, press conference, business conference, school assembly etc. However we just had a referendum to amend the Constitution to include the Aboriginal/indigenous people and it was rejected in a landslide in every state so to your point, we don't believe it that much to put out self out

I’d love to see more movies about how indigenous life was before the colonials. They do movies about how Africa is but not much about North America. They all fought each other for land and food too. The Caribbeans were cannibals. That’s why it is called the Caribbean.

Lmao the Constellation episode where the D's do a coup. Real crazy how they just lathered Colin with mustard and hung him up before his wedding day

Chris's Closeted Weeabo Side

I'm catching this one now, I'm a huge horror fan, I definitely want to hear that topic.

The end made me picture a YouTube series of Dagan and Dustin being taught how to dance by Dagan’s wife and daughter. 😄

I’d be all for a Last Stand history podcast featuring Colin and whoever. I love it when they discuss these kinds of topics.

There's definitely something to be said about the number of horror flicks mentioned in that conversation are adaptations (some looser than others) of books. Lol

The problem with Israel going to the table first is there isn’t anyone to go to the table with. They have tried for decades and have been rebuked.

Perfect Blue is fantastic. I watched it as a kid and had to watch multiple times to understand what happened.

Angel DeJesus

I found that conversation on Trigonometry with Eric Weinstein to be really high level. It's such a complicated issue...

As a Puerto Rican, I have so much to say about colonialism, and about this conversation. I disagree with you so much, but I still love you guys. But yeah, colonialism is only complex when you're not suffering from it. My father was spied on and filed by the FBI for being a Puerto Rican Independentist. My aunt burned the file when he died. Again, so much to say, but I won't. Not in a comment at least.

I’ve always felt like Annihilation gives off strong Junji Ito vibes. Weird, scary shit happening without a very clear explanation. It makes sense why Dustin would like it given that he’s an acknowledged Ito fan. I love stuff like this myself—if you like eerie atmospheric sci-fi with a surreal, vaguely pessimistic overtone, then it’s a must watch.

Supes

Really enjoyed the colonialism discussion.
