in terms of Luffy sounding more like a leader in these past episodes, i like to think it started with Kaku's evaluation of the damage on the Merry; when he was in denial about it, and in response Iceberg criticized his qualities as captain, i think that played a role in why Luffy went back on his decision on the Merry, and the whole Usopp thing that followed, added to this "change" in priorities, making him think more like "what should a good leader do in my postion". tho it's also to be noted that we never seen Luffy in as much of a crisis before, so we can't know for certain if that isn't just how Luffy always reacted to problems as a leader, maybe he just was never put in a situation like this before on screen, so we didn't got to see much this side of him. After all Luffy is much of a reactive character more than a proactive one (to link to why he's soo smart combact wise but not actually); he won't go in a fight thinking all the moves his adversary can pull, cause he doesn't think that's relevant, he'll just adapt to problems when problems will be presented to him, and he's just very good at adapting on the spot (which works wonders with his power being as versatile as it is).

I swear lycan .. nothing ever gets past you, daym even I didn't notice luffy's change after he fought against usopp when I was watching one piece for the first time. Best reaction channel keep going broskies

I feel like Luffy has been more captain-like since the fight with Aokiji. Remember how he ordered everybody to go back to the ship so he could sacrifice himself in a fight he knew he would lose. And losing the ship and Usopp only progressed that further.

I would say Luffy appearing more captain-like was sparked by Iceberg and solidified by the fight with Usopp. If you remember when Iceberg told him the Going Merry was not going to last much longer, Luffy refused to believe it. I think we've rarely seen Luffy change his mind. Then, Iceberg said "And you call yourself a captain?!" Luffy thought hard about the Going Merry and actually decided to get a new ship at that point, making a leadership decision that he knew affected the entire crew. With Usopp's rebellion, Luffy realized the true burden of a captain. This burden became even heavier with Robin's disappearance, but Luffy must be the foundation the other crew members can depend on.
