Whether they die or not isn't really relevant. The point of those collars wasn't to say: "Look! Even Zoro couldn't escape if he became a slave!" The point was to show how slavery is done and the cruel/unethical conduct of it. And - of course - for most people it's deadly. Like for 99,9% of people who would get caught and sold as a slave to begin with would die from it. Yeah, Straw Hats are fine. But they won't ever be slaves to begin with. (Although I'm sure they can use sea prison stone collars - that weaken - with bombs, too) It's like watching a documentary on real life slavory, seeing how they're held and be like: "that doesn't scare me. I could escape that" well...that's most likely not the point of the documentary, is it. So in that sense, it was a bit of a weird reaction. They say it didn't scare them. But it wasn't meant to scare them in the sense of being afraid for the crew
