No they aren't the same. Noland wasn't a pirate.
And there was a mention of another adventurer, too. The one from Nami's book who named Little Garden
And it's as Tom said: If you HISS A PIRATE FLAG, you're a pirate.

The reality is that the government labels anyone on the sea that doesn't obey them as a pirate, which is fairly accurate to actual pirates. Most pirates have to steal from ships because it's the only way for them to get supplies since any other way has the danger of them being arrested. Pirates are basically just free sailors, with some using that freedom for evil and others using it for good. The government doesn't really care, they just don't want the freedom because they want control, so it's convenient to lump them all together as evil.

This comment is SUPERRRRRRR late but I would love to hear Lycans thoughts on shanks, Ace, and Whitebeard if he considers “pirate” a title only for evil people, because we know there good people. He says the straw hats are “fake” pirates but I wonder what he thinks of ace whitebeard and shanks.

Luffy is a pirate because he says so. He dont want to be a hero or anything. He want to eat all the food by himself.
I think that people of the OP world never knew our world, so their definition of a "pirate" may be a lack of the word "adventurer". Maybe theyre the same word..

Majority of pirates are super bad same as nobels ppl. Marines suppose to be fine nation fighting pirates for good of ppl, but there ain't just one white and black. Luffy is mc but he is a criminal? Yes, he is by kicking marine soldiers at Enies Lobby which is against the law. We love Robin and from our perspective it's good but whole thing is against government rules. That's the reason of bounty posters. It makes him and his subordinates bad ppl and good at the same time. Who is good, who is bad. Hard to tell, that's why it's interesting.

Imo art style is different instead of animation. Besides Luffy's, Robin's side story is the most interesting to me. Usopp seems to end up with the bravest man named Heracles'n.

it was luffys idea to steal the gold on skypiea though
2020-09-20 19:20:19 +0000 UTC
Who has Nami murdered? And if you say the dude she pushed over the ship going up reverse mountain. You realize that was a filler character in a filler scene. Doesn't exist in the manga.

Nami and zoro have murdered before in the manga and show. Luffy and his entire crew stole gold from skypia. They also declared war on the government attacked marines and pirates alike and even punched a world official. They have made countless criminal acts against the government and have stolen treasure from other pirates. So yes they are definitely seafaring pirates who commit crimes. Its fits the definition perfectly. They are just more good then anything tho

Use a Moral Alignment Chart because One Piece is at least 2 dimensional, not black and white. Moral axis is "Good, Moral, Neutral, Impure, Evil," and the Legal axis is "Lawful, Social, Neutral, Rebel, Chaotic." To me, Luffy is between Chaotic Good or True Neutral, so basically Rebel Moral since he tends to disobey the law but helps people mostly. Please remember that legality and morality are perpendicular, not parallel. Legally, Luffy is a pirate simply by not aligning with the government, and he is not pure good either.

A pirate in our world is considered bad. But in one piece, they are bad and good people who just want to sail the seas free. Free from the law that the world government is enforcing. Pirate means an outlaw, you can still be a pirate without robbing people nor killing them. It’s just that in one piece, you’re a pirate if you oppose the government.

You have to remember that in the world of One Piece the government is pretty messed up. Just like you saw in this episode, they enslave the citizens of countries that don't ally with them. Pirates don't have to be people that hate innocent lives. Pirates can be a range of things. They can be people who murder and steal to get whatever they want, or they can be people who just don't want to listen to the World Government. If you go against the government, they're gonna label you a pirate. Another example is the Sun Pirates made up of fishmen, many of whom were escaped slaves. They were pirates because they defied the government, they never had the choice of just being "adventurers." Kiss the government's ass, join the navy, or be a pirate, those are your options.

the thing is, being free is desobeying the law, in luffy's way of seeing things, being a pirate is being free and travelnig the seas, they do what they want and travel the sea, so it makes sense that they are pirates, thats what it is about, other characters say something close to this often in the series

Yo remember the end of Skypiea. They ran because they stole all of that gold..sure they would have given it too them anyway but the fact Luffy was willing to steal from all of them shows he is all about that pirate life. And lets be real, Luffy and Zoro have killed tons of people in One Piece they just depict it comically so we don't take it serious

Ship to ship combat is an act of piracy? Well then Luffy and crew are pirates by definition. Taking treasure is robbing, even if the ones the treasure belongs to have been dead for 200 years, or if it was taken from other pirates. Again, Luffy and crew are pirates by definition. Stop trying to finesse that title away from them.

aymenz was right, he was just saying Luffy is a good pirate. Lycan just kept saying "but hes not a pirate" - Luffy is a pirate though just a good one which is very rare, and lycan was right in that luffy saves people. he is like superhero pirate jesus who saves everyone he meets. luffy is still a pirate though no matter what, pirate just means you sail the sea and they are true pirates looking for treasure too

Thanks DD. I love how Lycan thought of Luffy’s thoughts on the word pirate. I hope he keeps these thoughts in mind moving forward. What makes the East Blue arc so enjoyable when rewatching is the fact that Luffy knew the weight of the label “Pirate” from the jump. Always telling certain people that they have to put their lives on the line. Pirates do what they want! That’s why Rayleigh saw Roger in Luffy in ep 400. That was the underlying theme of those first 10 or whatever episodes.
“Ordinary” - Luffy, and Criminal - the majority, in a way. Luffy is lowkey the simplest complex character. You gotta watch his words closely, it’s easy to miss. I love that discussion at the end, good shit Amenz!

2020-09-19 22:20:49 +0000 UTC
Amenz views is influenced by the lack of good he sees being done by the marines. He forgets that pirates are the bad guys and marines are the good guys which is understandable. It’s like the real world, cops are good but we still see bad ones... despite that, we still see the cops as good people.
A great conversation, especially heading into how Garp and Aces relationship will play out for the execution. Will Garp turn bad to save a bad guy (ace)? Or will he uphold the name of justice to protect and serve the good? Let’s see what will happen.
