If we think that Crocodile was a silver medalist beaten by Whitebeard then may be given up his dream or thought to gain ultimate power to fulfill his dream, we can understand why he settled in Alabasta. A place where his devil fruit power will be unbeatable. And if you read back his speeches during that arc keeping this information in mind, we get a whole new perception about what he is telling to Luffy. He might have felt like WB crushing a rookie with dreams. But the problem is Luffy didn't stay dead or ran away even after almost getting killed. Moreover he was fighting to help a friend that has nothing to do with his dream in crocodile's opinion. This is what I like about one piece, as we come to know new information in the story reading old chapters give us a new angle of understanding.

Just because the anime doesn't show that info doesn't make it a spoiler, because you were meant to receive that info at the time that the chapter with the cover story came out.

It’s cool how Oda uses the prison to show us how hard it can be in the grand line if people like Mr. 3/Mr. 2 get sent to some of the lower levels. And how strong the navy as a whole unit is for maintaining it.

So yeah the manga cover stories explain most of what goes on but they don't animate it as it might get spoilery. Croc was taken to a normal prison, yea they have those, and the members of baroque works that weren't captured tried to free him, were successful, but Croc being the gangster type badass he is, didn't leave. After that they sent him to impel down to be more secure.

Actually there is a cover story about how crocodile and others ended up in impel down and what happened to other agents. I don't think it is spoiler to tell this but in that cover story it is reveled that crocodile wanted to become pirate king. By his comment here, like you said, he might be a silver medalist too. And if you remember when crocodile hears Luffy saying he would become pirate king he says "The more one knows about these seas, the less he would make such thoughtless remarks. I told you there are thousands of rookies like you on this sea." So he got beaten badly, may be by Whitebeard and stopped. Buggy said Whitebeard went toe to toe with Roger. So crocodile might have went after him to prove his strength. Now since Whitebeard might end up weak physically after fighting marines to get Ace, he wants to get his revenge.
